PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Meet —Alexis Townshend Te Rawhiti House Leader 2017

I started at Craighead in 2013 as a small Year 9 student, eager to begin a new adventure in the great wide world of high school. It is still crazy to think I am completing my fifth and final year here, almost ready to start a whole new adventure. Craighead has always presented a great number of challenges for me, but also an equal amount of amazing opportunities. This year I am captaining the school Football team (who are having an absolutely fantastic season). I have been a part of Stage Challenge for the fourth year running, and I am having an amazing time with the gorgeous Brittany Honeywell leading our House, Te Rawhiti.

It’s always crazy to think how differently things turn out from the way you’d expect them to. For example, I don’t think I ever imagined myself as a House leader but having been given the opportunity, I’ve been having an awesome time getting to know all of our Te Rawhiti girls. Although our House is not in the lead yet, all the other Houses better watch out as we’re about to make our move to push out in front to take the House Cup at the end of the year.

I am looking forward to moving out to the great wide world next year, but for the moment I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings— LET’S GO TE RAWHITI!

LOST JEWELLERY— We have a quite a number of pieces of jewellery that have been found,

or confiscated and not collected, at the School office. If your daughter is missing an item of jewellery, please contact the office. Anything left

here at the end of the term will be donated to Women’s Refuge.

As part of our Year 9 English Film Study, we looked at how difficult it is to be new in a strange place. To help our International

students feel welcome, we came up with the idea of making a special welcome card and gift bag for each student. When we gave our gifts, we sat down and had a chat to our International students. We asked them questions about their homes, personality, interests, talents, likes and dislikes. It was really good to make new friends.

…and you are invited!! Friday 30 June 2017, 7-11pm

CDS Parents and Friends invite all parents and staff to join them for a night of mid-winter fun—catch up with friends

and make some news ones within the Craighead community—entertainment by DJ Vinyl Man.

$20 from the School Office—No Door Sales Cash bar, finger food provided

Year 11 French students enjoying an authentic meal at our very own French restaurant, Chez Annabel. Thank you so much to our wonderful

Year 13 students and Mme Mills who made the event possible.

ART SUCCESS

Congratulations to Sarah Dunbar, Y11, who won The People’s Choice award at the recent RSM Law Plunket Art Show, celebrating 40 years of fundraising for Plunket in South Canterbury. Than Bulakul was placed third out of the forty students exhibiting.

STAC EXCHANGE

The annual sports exchange with St Andrew's College was held on Tuesday 13 June and was hosted by St Andrew's in Christchurch. Contrary to the earlier forecast, the weather was brilliant with the southerly storm hitting just as we left for home—perfect timing!

Craighead had mixed results, winning three games and losing seven, but all games were played in great spirit. Congratulations to the following teams for their well-deserved wins: Senior B Netball, 10A Netball, Junior A Basketball.

Congratulations to Bryleigh Collins who has been been selected to referee at the New Zealand U15 National Basketball Championships in July. Bryleigh has been refereeing both Junior and Senior basketball for five

years and has previously been selected to referee several Mainland Tournaments around the South Island.

Congratulations to the following girls who competed successfully at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Cross Country, held last Wednesday 7 June at Mountainview High School:

HOMESTAYS NEEDED … CAN YOU HELP???

Thank you for the response to my recent request for homestay placements for the visiting Japanese and Chinese students—we now have them accommodated for their time at Craighead. In addition, a group from Korea are coming to us for approximately eight weeks from 21 July, as part of a Government-led initiative. Whether you are parents of a daygirl or a boarder, we would encourage you to host if you would like to share your family experience with one of our visiting students. We are able to place some students in the boarding house for the weekdays, then they could join boarding families at home for the weekends, offering students a great insight into rural New Zealand life.

A homestay fee is paid to host families, and support and advice given to help you have the best possible hosting experience. For further information, please contact me to discuss the possibility of joining our group of homestay providers for this specific visit.

CYCLING

Craighead was represented for the first time this year at Aoraki Cycling Championships. The squad including Alex Butler-Baird, Zoe Earnshaw, Sophie Groundwater and Mila Rollo had some strong individual racing with Mila placing fifth in the Individual Time Trial and

Alex placing fourth in the 15km Scratch race. In the U16 Girls’ Team Time Trail, the girls were first with a time of 8:09. This was their first TTT event and they rode a very strong race passing the other two composite teams who went out before them.
