The second annual Steelwood Golf Invitational was a huge success. We had
a full field of 120 players that comprised 60 teams. The golf course was in
excellent condition and the food and festivities were equally exceptional. I
would like to thank Matt Russell and his golf staff, Chris McElhaney and
Dayna Wandrey and our Clubhouse staff, and Cody Alexander and his
maintenance staff for a job well done.
We have just finished planting our summer garden. We have 400 tomato
plants, squash, cucumbers, and peppers. I would like to thank Wayne
Willard, who is in our housekeeping department, for all of his help and
expertise with the kitchen garden. Wayne has spent countless hours over the
last several months working and helping with the garden. We should be
harvesting tomatoes by the first week of June.
We have completed construction on the new Fish Camp boat house located
to the right of the Clubhouse. We are in the process of having it painted and
the boat house should be fully operational by the middle of May. As earlier
noted, all club boats are leaving from the Clubhouse side of the lake and the
Fish Camp office and tackle shop are located in the old office space to the
right of the Clubhouse. We have also added 6 to 7 additional parking spaces
that will make access to the club boats much easier. The fishing has been
great—be sure to flip to the back page and look at all the fish caught on the
lake in the past couple of months.

Great wines! Great food!
What else could you ask for when enjoying an evening watching the sun set at the Clubhouse?
Live a little and try something outside your comfort zone. Try a new wine like our El Felino Malbec. If you like
cabernets or just a nice bodied wine that is nicely balanced and has a little earthy tone, you’ll find yourself enjoying
this bottle.
Appellation: Mendoza, Argentina
Varietal: 100% malbec
Color: The core is black, the rim is saturated with a magenta hue. It has nice legs that hold over time.
On the nose: Aromas of crushed blackberries, plum skin and black currant enveloped in cedar.
The palate: Suggests boysenberries, cola, plum, and notes of smoky oolong tea, which supports earthy herbs.
The complex, persistent finish brings mocha and black cherry.
This is a fantastic wine to be paired with our wonderful pork chop as well as lamb or game birds. This wine also pairs
nicely with a cigar on the patio after dinner.

CHEF’S CORNER WITH CHRIS MCELHANEY
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. Melt two tablespoons butter in medium skillet or sauté pan over medium-low heat. Add squash and onions and
cook until tender.
3. To a large bowl, add eggs and lightly whisk. Add cheese and milk and whisk into egg until well-combined. Add
cooked squash and onions to egg mixture and stir well until combined. Melt remaining two tablespoons of butter
in skillet used to cook squash and onions. Add to squash casserole mixture. Add cayenne pepper, if using, along
with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
4. Spray a 9x13 casserole dish with cooking spray and pour squash casserole mixture into the baking dish. Top
evenly with crushed Ritz crackers. Place in preheated oven and bake 45 minutes, or until top has lightly browned
and casserole does not “jiggle” when the dish is moved.
5. Allow to sit for about 3 minutes before serving.

4 cups sliced yellow squash
1 medium onion, chopped
2 eggs

It seems to have been a cooler spring this year than last which has slowed the spring
green up a little but the course is still playing in fantastic condition. We just completed
our first aerification of the year on April 22nd and the greens received it very well.
Within a couple of weeks with warmer weather, the aerification should be just a
memory. Our next aerification is once again scheduled for the week following the AJGA
tournament on June 10-12. Please keep that in mind when planning your summer and
also know that there will be another aerification in the beginning of August.
In the coming months we will begin to redefine some of the greens. Over the past few years, some of you may
have noticed that the greens have shrunken in size. On many greens this has actually limited our pin locations.
We will be finding the original edge of select greens and stripping the current sod from the area to replace it
with sod from our nursery green. Please be patient with this process as it is the most important part of the golf
course and will take some time to do it right.
It has been a long winter project season, or so it seems, but the maintenance staff is excited for the summer
and we look forward to seeing you out there.
A NOTE FROM CODY ALEXANDER, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
The Chapel at Steelwood was established to allow persons to gather to worship and
offer prayers and thanksgiving to God. Through the generosity of families and
individuals, a parcel of land was set aside and a building was constructed. The first
worship service in the Chapel was held on Easter Sunday, 2000.
Every Sunday, with rare exceptions, a worship service is held for all who wish to
attend. In addition to Sundays, proper liturgies are offered for special days
(Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Thanksgiving, etc.) Upon request, weddings, baptisms,
and other family celebrations are held in the Chapel. The regular maintenance of the building and property
is made possible through donations from families and friends.
There are individuals and charitable organizations in our area who need financial aid; thankfully the
Chapel is able to respond with regularity to those needs. For instance, the Chapel recently assisted the
Child Advocacy Center, Wilmer Hall, Salvation Army, Family Medical Center, and Impact 100 as well as
individuals.
A FEW WORDS FROM THE CHAPEL AT STEELWOOD

There are essentially 3 ways to flight your wedges. You have your normal distance you
stand from the ball which will produce, let’s say, a medium height shot. To hit the ball
lower, you will move closer to the ball and maybe put the ball one ball further back in
your stance. To flight it higher, you would simply move a little further back from the
ball. These are 3 simple and helpful tips that will help you control the flight of the golf
ball. Controlling the spin is just as important, however. The lower you flight your
wedges, the more control you receive over spin and distance.
Arguably one of the best wedge players on the tour is Steve Stricker. If you watch Stricker hit his wedges,
you’ll notice he uses very little wrist cock in his back swing. The other thing he does extremely well is
making sure his hands move through the shot with the buttons (or center of rotation) on his shirt. Whether it
is a half, three-quarter, or almost a full shot, you will see him maintain these principles.
You will often never find great wedge players hitting full and powerful wedge shots. The more wrist cock
and club head speed you generate with your wedges, the more spin you create on the ball. This makes it
more difficult to control. The more you practice this, the more comfortable you will get. The more control
you get over your wedges, the closer you can start hitting it to the hole.

meetings, a day out on the golf course or just an afternoon sitting
on the porch.

With spring in the air, it is time to start (if you haven’t already) sprucing up your landscapes.
Your first fertilizer applications for turf and shrubs should have already been made and your
landscapes should be close to being in full swing. Picking the right fertilizers and herbicides
can be tricky. Certain chemicals can not be used on certain types of grass and certain types of
grass require different managements of fertility. If you would like any help with fertilizers,
herbicides, plantings of flowers or trees, sod work, pine straw, mulch, lot clearing, or any other
projects you may have, Dogwood will be happy to assist you with them. Please give us a call.
Water Management Tip
Water management is a crucial part of your landscaping needs. It can either be largely beneficial or the worst
nightmare for your turf, plants, etc. Most issues commonly seen with lawns can be traced back to your water
management. The ideal watering schedule for this time of year (without rain) would be one or two times a week
with longer run times. If you are watering everyday with short run times, you are creating the best possible recipe
for developing disease in your landscapes. The top layer of your profile consistently stays wet, therefore giving
fungi a perfect place to call home. By watering less often with longer run times, you allow the volume of water to
penetrate through the top layer of the profile into the root zone which is exactly what happens when it rains. This
is a much more efficient way of watering and your landscapes will thank you.

The Kitchen Garden is in full swing!
We’re growing tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and
peppers. Be sure to try the Clubhouse dishes that
feature our fresh Steelwood-grown vegetables.
Tomatoes should be harvested in early June.
