Healthy Tips from Around theWorld: AfricaGo Nuts for Nuts!

Packed with protein and often healthy fats,

nuts can serve as a nutritious and llingreplacement for meat and poultry. In Africa,

particularly in Gambia, peanuts are a common

complement to vegetables and spices in

numerous soups and stewsand perhaps its

no coincidence that this nation has not only

no problems with obesity, but also one of the

lowest international incidences of all types of

    cancer. (www.care2.com)

Test Your DetectorRun a test of your detectors once a

week. All units have an easily accessibletest button. Smoke detectors at

Oakwood Shores are hard wired and

    have a battery back-up.

Check Your BatteriesCheck batters every 6 months andchange them every year. When batterypower begins to run low, the batterywill chirp and let you know. Neverborrow a battery.

Dont Ignore False AlarmsIf your unit seems to have more than itsshare of false alarms, call it in so it can

    be replaced.

Keep Your Detectors CleanVaccum or clean your detector ofdust that accumulates in the slats andoutside cover

Never Paint Smoke DetectorsPainting a unit can block the ventsin the cover, preventing smoke from

CanLiveWithDid you know that Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the 1871 Great Chicago

Fire? This tragedy killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400

structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres.

This years campaign is Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With and focuses on ways to

keep homes re safe with a special emphasis on smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms are your rst

line of defense. The likelihood of surviving a re is vastly increased when people have working smoke

alarms and a home escape plan they have practiced.

The State Fire Marshall to offers the

    following tips for re safety:

    Working Smoke Detectors

Make sure you have working smoke

detectors in every oor of your house

and outside all sleeping areas. Do not

disconnect or tamper with the smoke

    detectors in your unit.

    Family Escape Plans

Create a family escape plan. Design a plan

to safely exit your home in case of a re.

Designate a meeting spot a safe distance

from your home in the event that you and

your family cannot escape together. All

family members should be familiar with

the family escape plan. Remember to hold

a family re drill to test your plan.

Have two ways out of every room of your

house. In every bedroom one window

should always be left clear with nothing in front

of the window or on the window sill.

In the event of a real re, never go back in your

home once you are out, call 911, and stick to

    your plan.

    Good Housekeeping Prevents Fires

Remember to never leave boiling, broiling, or

    frying food unattended.

If you have a smoker in your house, make

sure to have a deep, wide ashtray on a sturdy

table. Check that the cigarette is completely out

every time. Smokers should never smoke in

bed, smoke when tired, or smoke where where

    oxygen tanks are in use.

Follow these simple tips to keep you and your

    family safe!

Keanu Ware has been busy. This summer, in the Learn & Earn program, he participated in study skill

development, job readiness programming, and went on eld trips around the city. Keanu did so well

in his summer program that his teacher nominated him for a special prize at the end of the summer.

What was the special prize? A shopping spree at Target!

Of the 600 Learn & Earn participants city wide, 25 were selected for the grand prize. Winners of

the Target shopping spree had 30 minutes to grab all the clothing and educational items they could

carry. Keanu stocked up on supplies for school like books, pens, pencils, and lots of jeans.

Both the Learn & Earn program and the Target shopping spree have served Keanu well as he

is back in school for the 2010-2011 school year. Keanu is a freshman at Dunbar Vocational Career

Academy, but dont let his young age fool you. Keanu is on a mission.

Im at Dunbar for the culinary arts program. I want to be Chief Executive Chef at the White

House, he beamed as he handed me his report card. All As and Bs. Looks like Learn & Earn has

    paid off.

With the school year in full gear, Keanu has been looking for other extra curricular programs

to build his resume and experience. He recently applied to be part of the Oakwood Shores Digital

Connectors program. The popular program offers participants the opportunity to learn about digital

media, internet safety, and nancial literacy and received more than 40 applications for only 17 spots.

    Congratulations Keanu, youre in.
