On March 31, 2010 at the Volunteer Council Meeting, Kathy Howe, made the following announcement:

This year, we were again able to award ten (10) $1,000 scholarships to young adult volunteers who participated in the Volunteer Student Scholarship Process.

To recap, the scholarship process is a competitive one. Awardees are selected by a committee of educators using a weighted criteria system that includes: references (both school and personal), academic performance, volunteer hours of service and a comprehensive essay.

I am pleased to announce that there was at least one winner at each of Oakwood’s acute care facilities and, in addition, one awardee provided service at Oakwood’s Village Plaza location, and one awardee provided service at Oakwood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing.

Volunteers in the Spot Light

2010 Health Care Advocacy Day

On March 24, Oakwood volunteers, staff and physicians participated in the MHA’s 2010 Health Care Advocacy Day in Lansing. Participants at this year’s event learned about public policy, in Lansing and Washington, how that policy is affecting Michigan hospitals and how the health care community can collectively work together to influence real change for hospitals, providers and patients.

The attendees also heard inspiring stories from LeAnn Thieman, author of Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul. Ms. Thieman shared her life experience – and that of other caregivers - to offer hope and inspiration to those individuals whose care and service, on behalf of others, helps make a difference in today’s world.

Featured are volunteers attending the 2010 Health Care Advocacy Day in Lansing. Standing, L-R, Roberta Phillips (OSMC), Terry Frazier (OAH), Phyllis Zakalowski (OAH), Gaye Mitchell-James (OHMC) and Ron Beeber (OHMC). Kneeling, L-R, Angie Belayneh (OHH) and John Bauer (OHH).
