On Wednesday, 16 March, Stanground Academy cluster primary schools participated for the year 5 and 6 Minto/Ballantyne Trophies, competing in football and high five netball. The primary students get to compete at the secondary Academy’s sports facilities, some experiencing this for the first time. The competition was a round-robin format and the team with the most wins would have the honour of taking the trophy back to their school for proud display. Stanground Academy’s young leaders were on hand to referee and umpire to ensure fair play. Once the whistles blew for the first matches the schools showed their determination in wanting to take home the trophies. The Hi Five Netball matches were of a very high standard; all schools showed great team work and a passion to win, whilst having respect for their opponents at all times. With a gruelling schedule there was not much time to rest. To win the match teams needed to score quickly and there was not a shortage of goals, only 2 matches ending in a no score draw. Winning 4 out of their 5 matches, some ending in a score draw but scoring in every one and not losing any, Oakdale Primary School won the netball in style, closely followed by Southfields. The football, played on the Academy’s Power League pitches, saw a plethora of goals. Each team enjoyed playing in the professional envi- ronment. The William De Yaxley Primary School showed their skills with both their A and B teams reaching the final. Oakdale again featured well test- ing both Willam De Yaxley teams, but had to settle with 3rd place. Congratulations to the winning teams and thanks to all the Schools who entered. Peterborough primary schools were invited to attend Quad Kids Athletics and Cross Country events this term all hosted at the Stanground Academy by the school games organiser and Stanground Academy

Sport Partnership.

Quad Kids is a brand new event available to schools this year and allows schools to compete in the 4 athletic elements of sprint, run, jump and throw. 110 boys and girls competed for 11 school teams at this event in a rotation, which incorporated both all schools and small school events.

The cross country was well attended with over 170 young people competing. 15 primary and special schools, some who had not competed before in the school games, made up the cross county teams. Competitors were put to the test over a set distance on the Stanground Academy fields, however showed superb deter-mination to get to the end, echoing the Spirt of the Games val-ues.

Hampton Vale Primary School were victorious on the day, winning the Quads Event in a close battle with Eye C of E Primary School who only trailed by a few points. Heritage Park won the small schools Quad Kids event with Winyates a close second. All four teams will be representing Peterborough School Sports partnership in the level 3 County finals on the 30th June.

Barnack C of E primary School had 4 runners finishing in the top 20 runners at the cross country and won, with Northborough Primary School coming second. Nene Valley Harriers volunteers gave support on the day as marshals and were on hand to advise any students new to running looking for opportunities out of school.

School Games Organiser for Peterborough, Anita Duff said, ‘It was exciting as many of the schools were battling for the top spots in these events. We also welcomed new schools to the School Games showing that schools in the area are motivated to improving their students’ physical literacy.’

Peterborough schools are now looking forward to attending the summer events including tennis, cricket and golf. For more information about the school game email [email protected] or visit www.yourschoolgames.com

Over 330 year 1 pupils from our family of

primary schools attended the Stanground

Academy for the Multi-Skills Festival. The event was spread across all our sportshalls and organ-ised by James Aldous, Primary PE Manager at the Stanground Academy, and the year 13 Level 3 BTEC Sports Leaders.

All pupils took part in 10 different multi skills activi-ties all run by our post 16 students who were a credit to the Academy and the Greenwood Dale Trust.

All the activities looked at improving pupils’ agility, balance, co-ordination and speed (ABCs) which are all key aspects to help them improve their performance in a variety of sports. The pupils worked really hard and had a huge amount of fun throughout the Festival.

Primary staff commented how fantastic the post 16 leaders were and how the

pupils couldn’t wait to tell their parents how much fun they’d had as well as showing them their certificate from the day.

The Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust Sports Partnership is now in it’s fifth year of organising and running a Multi Skills Academy (MSA) at the Stanground Academy for a total of 6 weeks. The MSA has been run for Year 5 and 6 students as well as Year 3 and 4.

Multi skills activities allow young people to take part in a wide range of non-sport specific activities to develop all-round young athletes. A Multi Skills Academy (MSA) is a talent development pathway for students identified as gifted and talented (G&T) in physical education and sport. Multi Skills Academies apply the principles of multi-skills

development, enabling young people to develop a higher level of physical skills, rather than sport specific skills.

The Multi Skills Academy was held at the Stanground Academy and run by the Sports Partnerhsips’ full time sports coaches, Robert Hughes and Joe Pickett.

Robert Hughes commented about the level of abilities of students

attending “ the standard of the

students attending is amazing. It’s fantastic to see so many gifted and

talented students eager to learn and develop. They have pushed us as coaches to come up with tougher practices and games to challenge them”.

At the end of each session a trophy is awarded to the top performer during that session, who is then encouraged to go into to assembly and explain why they have won that award for the week. The MSA has been a huge success so far and thanks must go to Primary schools for nominating students to attend as well as parents for transporting to and from each session.

Multi Skills Academy is a huge success

Lindsey Keable, International English Netball player also gave an inspirational speech to open the Games and continued to show support for the event by visiting various venues to chat with young people during the day.

The event highlights personal sporting qualities called the Spirit of the Games. These include Honesty, Teamwork, Respect, Self-Belief, Passion and Determination. A new element at this years’ event included nominations in each sport for the Spirit of the Games award. Results can be seen below.

School Games Organiser, Anita Duff, who experienced the opening ceremony for the first time said, ’The opening ceremony was a true spectacle, capturing both a St Patrick’s Day and Rio Olympics theme in separate performances, then Jack Hunt School cheer leaders surprised us all as they jumped out from amongst the audience into an innovative routine donning all the Partnership team colours. This really uplifted crowd involved. It was a lively, energetic and creative start to the Games.’

Six schools came together on the 3 February to take part in the year 4 Sports Hall Athletics competition at the Stanground Academy. The

competition was organised and run by Stanground Academy staff James Aldous, Andy Phillips ,Rob Hughes and Anita Duff. With each school bringing a girls and boys team both sports halls were in full use with close to 300 pupils taking part in

running events as well as field activi-ties.

Pupils scored points for their school in each event they took part in which were collated and adjudicated by the year 13 students. The team work and

enthusiasm shown by all students taking part lead to some high scoring across the six schools who entered. Old Fletton girls and Gunthorpe 1 team put in some great performances in the field events whilst the Southfields 2 and Heritage Park

boys teams lit up the running events.

The morning was enjoyed by all and the

determination shown by the pupils to do their best for their school was a huge credit to them all. The final results where exceptionally close but it was Old Fletton 1 who came out on top, followed by Heritage Park .

Congratulations to all those who took part from Southfields, Old Fletton, Heritage Park, Oakdale, Folksworth and Gunthorpe.

Over 350 year 2 pupils from our family of primary schools attended the Stanground Academy for the Multi-Skills Festival. The event was spread across all our sportshalls and organised by James Aldous, Primary PE Manager at the Stanground Academy, and the year 13 Level 3 BTEC Sports Leaders. Due to the record numbers attending we had over 30 Sports Leaders assisting from our Post-16 students, all of whom were great

ambassadors for the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust.

Primary staff and pupils commented with the following during and after the event:

“Many thanks for organising this

experience for our year 2

pupils — they had a superb time!”

“Can we stay and do some more PE?”

“When are we coming back?”

The Year 2 children achieved a great deal over the morning and developed their; agility, balance, co-ordination and speed (ABCs). These are such

important skills for an athlete and the year 2

children can begin to understand how the games can help them to perform better at a variety of sports.
