Oak Forest and Crestwood share asimilar heritage, with historiesstretching back to the early 19th

century. Around this time, the region wasspeckled with farms and new towns beganspringing up with the coming of therailroad. Many of Oak Forest(originally known asCooper’s Grove) andcurrent-day Crestwood’searliest settlers traveledfrom Germany to takeadvantage of the region’shigh quality land – as manyof these settlers were farmers.

By the early 20th century, the area beganexperiencing much in the way ofresidential development. The MidlothianCountry Club was established, and in1927, residents living around the countryclub incorporated as the village ofMidlothian. A small population just northalso chose to incorporate as a village –and thus, in 1928, the village ofCrestwood was born.

In 1947, Oak Forest incorporated as avillage. Between 1950 and 1970, bothOak Forest and Crestwood’s populationdoubled. More subdivisions, the OakForest Hospital, a new high school district

and many other new convenienceswere all significant products of

this era. Additionally, roadimprovement projects wereset in place throughout thearea, and the much-anticipated Interstate 80opened the area to further

development. In 1971, thevillage of Oak Forest was

officially incorporated as a city.

As 2000 approached, the mass exodusinto many southern suburbs graduallydecreased—but not here. Oak Forest andCrestwood continue to grow and develop,as many young families are establishinghouseholds here. The area attracts newresidents and businesses for the samereasons that it had originally been soughtout – its natural beauty, ideal location, theavailability of affordable real estate and,most importantly, its valued residents.


History

Oak Forest and Crestwood aresituated just over 20 miles fromthe Loop, in southwest Cook

County. The region’s wide range oftransportation options provides residentsand business owners with easy access toboth the excitement of downtownChicago and the relaxation of thesuburbs.

Commuters and shoppers alike cantake advantage of 24/7 access todowntown Chicago and all points in-between on the Metra trains that departregularly from the Oak Forest commuterstation at 159th & Cicero Avenue. Thestation is served by four commuter parkinglots with more than 1,000 parking spaces.

The Pace bus system alsoshuttles commuters to and from

the station and other destinations withconvenient morning, afternoon andevening routes.

The Oak Forest-Crestwood AreaChamber ofCommerce, inpartnership withthe City of OakForest, hosts theAnnual Oak ForestFleadh (pronouncedflah) every year inMarch. The Fleadh – Gaelicfor festival – includes customerappreciation celebrations, a 5Kcompetitive run, an open bike ride, afamily parade and Pub and RestaurantOpen House. This event will take place onCicero Avenue between 151st and 159thStreet. The Oak Forest Fleadh showcasesthe spirit of our community, promotes ourlocal businesses and brings many newpeople to our area.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, make astop at Oak Forest’s Chicago Gaelic Parkfor the annual Irish Fest. This exciting eventfeatures a variety of entertainment,including Irish music, theatricalperformances, cultural workshops,contests and a full carnival, plus plenty offood and beverages. Each year, a portionof the proceeds is donated to a worthycause.

The Oak Fest Commission hosts theAnnual Oak Fest over the 4th of July

holiday. Oak Fest is a not-for-profitorganization whose sole purpose is toraise money for Oak Forest groups and to

highlight its businesses. Each yearthe annual festival centers

around the July 4th holidayfeaturing local musical actsnightly as well as acarnival, food and drink,a car show, a 5K run,games and activities. The

event also offers thebest fireworks showin Chicagoland onthe 4th of July.And as always,admission is free!

Crestwood Fest is afurther summertime favorite in the area.Held in August at Caesar Park, the festoffers guests main stage entertainment,arts & crafts vendors, an assortment ofchildren’s activities, food, a car and bikeshow and fireworks. Admission toCrestwood Fest is free.

Crestwood also hosts the exciting WindyCity ThunderBolts, a professional minorleague baseball team. Fans of the GreatAmerican Pastime pile into Standard BankStadium to cheer on their ‘Bolts at nearly50 home games during the team’s May-September season. A variety ofpromotions are held in conjunction withthe home games including: 2-for-1Tuesdays; $1.00 hot dog and sodaWednesdays; fireworks on Saturdays; andvarious themed nights.
