Gallery gets into the giving spirit

Dan EbenalNews Staff

The creativity of art and the spirit of Christmas come together next week in Oak Bay to benefit the community and some of those most in need of a little holiday cheer.

The Red Art Gallery will host the Holiday Art Exchange from Dec. 9 to 13, with every dollar raised going directly to the Victoria Women’s Transition House.

“The whole idea is to find a piece of art that you’re prepared to part with, bring it down to us, you put your own price on it, and that piece of art will be hung in the gallery from Dec. 9 to 13,” said Bobb Hamilton with Red Art Gallery. “When a buyer comes in, if they like that piece of art, the buyer will write the cheque directly to the Victoria Women’s Transition House.”

While the Transition House will receive every dime from the sales, those donating the art will get a credit at the gallery for 50 per cent of what the piece sells for.

“If a piece sells for $800, we would give them a $400 credit that is applicable to anything they want to buy at the gallery

after this event,” said Hamilton, adding the credit is transferable.

It’s a win-win for the community. Those donating works have a chance to share some art that may be just gathering dust in a closet and also receive credit for something new to hang on the wall, while

those looking to buy can pick up a piece from some well-known artists at affordable prices. And it all goes to help the great work done by the Victoria Women’s Transition House.

“The community has supported us well. It’s our way of giving back,” said Hamilton. “And

you’re finding new homes for all these beautiful works.”

He credits his wife Marion Evamy as the inspiration for the exchange.

“Marion dreams up most of these ideas. Marion’s the creative part of the gallery and I’m the administrative and

marketing part,” he said. “Every year she tries to figure out a way to do something a little different than asking for straight cash donations. I really have to give her credit her for coming up with some unique ideas.”

Some of the artists whose works have been pledged for donation include: Dulcie Foo Fat, David Peter Hunsberger, Toni Onley, Manish Om Prakash, Susy Raxlen, Marion Evamy, Brian Simons, Danny Everett Stewart, Judy Perrin and Donna Ion.

The only condition of the exchange is that the artwork should be able to fetch a price of at least $250, and the gallery is only accepting paintings, serigraphs, etchings, silkscreens and drawings.

“We’re wanting original work only. That’s always been the gallery’s mandate anyway, we don’t sell reproductions, we don’t sell prints, we don’t sell photographs,” said Hamilton.

Those wanting to donate a piece of art are invited to come down to the gallery at 2249 Oak Bay Ave. and drop it off on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“It’s up to the donor to determine their own price. It’s important that they feel comfortable with the price that they’ve put on it but it’s also important that they don’t put too high a price on it because then it won’t sell.”

Sea of Lights sets sail

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

Sailors will bling out their starboard sides this week at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in anticipation of a well-lit Friday evening. That right-hand side of the vessel is the one set to sparkle for audiences on the shoreline of Oak Bay and into Saanich for the Sea of Lights.

In the ongoing tradition of the sail past that started in 2006, HMCS Oriole leads the pack of up to 30 brightly decorated boats.

“They lead the fleet,” said event co-ordinator John Carter. “At Willows Beach [the boats] do a couple of pirouettes, then go up past 10 Mile Point.”

At Willows Beach a bonfire takes the chill off for the crowds gathered for the lighted sea parade.

“It’s an excuse to get the family down there and warm by the bonfire,” said Carter. “I’ve been the one on the beach at Willows with hot chocolate, it’s great.”

Then the sea-goers head for a second showing for those gathered at Gyro Park in Cadboro Bay. Community

events are planned for both parks in aid of the Salvation Army.

“It’s for food and cash donations to their kettle campaign,” Carter said.

The Salvation Army’s biggest fundraiser of the year kicked off Nov. 22 and runs until Dec. 24. Last year, the kettle campaign in Greater Victoria raised $175,000 – $75,000 short of the goal. This year the organization hopes to raise $225,000.

“The fire department

will manage a small bonfire on the beach in front of the Willows Tea room,” said Fire Chief Dave Cockle. Also a member of the Oak Bay Kiwanis, Cockle advised they will have the Tea Room open for cookies and hot chocolate by donation. “As well, they will have their famous Christmas cakes for sale,” Cockle said.

“This is a fun family evening that you need to dress warm for. Last year’s event had to be cancelled as the winds were too high and safety was a concern.”

Sailing in the Sea of Lights is also a blast. Afterward, crews tie up and head to the yacht club for a warming meal and prizes, Carter said. While there will be some traditional firsts, there should be a plethora of unusual titles handed out as they’ll look for an excuse to get most participants a prize.

After the last-minute cancellation last year, the Sea of Lights hopes for calm seas Friday.

“It was a wild day, blowing a gale,” Carter said. “Hopefully this year we’ll have a crisp, clear night. Dry would be good too.”

The best times to catch the lighted vessel parade for Friday’s Sea of Lights will be at Cattle Point at 7 p.m., Willows Beach Park at 7:15 p.m. and in Saanich at Gyro Park on Cadboro Bay around 7:45 [email protected]

Insomnia can, in large part, be blamed for the latest philanthropic caper of two Oak Bay girls.

Jessica Maitland kept getting mid-night texts from her friend Leah Smith while the latter was on a family trip to Europe.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I started thinking about We Day,” Smith said.

Both Grade 8 students have been active in We Day, a global youth movement to change “me” to “we” and make the world a

better place. With her mind racing from topic to topic, Smith

texted her suggestion to hold a Sock and Hygiene Product Drive.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, they gathered 88 pairs of socks and some products to stuff them with during a drive at Landsdowne middle school. The goal is to have 100 pairs stuffed with several hygiene products in each pair.

“We stuff them with about four hygiene products we’ve collected,” Maitland said.

Items include shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and facecloths, of which they only have about 10 right now.

“They are really helpful for them to have,” Smith said. “Someone donated a large collection of hats, so we’re going to collect those as well.”

This month the hit Oak Bay Avenue up for donations with

drop boxes at The Shoe Place and A LaMode.

The socks will go to the Dandelion Society, a registered non-profit started in 2011 that says it helps those “who struggle with or without poverty, pain and addiction.”

“We like to choose [charities] that aren’t as high profile,” Smith said, noting both girls have done extensive fundraising for Mustard Seed and Our Place as well.

To make certain they hit the 100 mark “we’re going to have a street collection,” Smith said.

The pair will be outside Nicholas Randall, 2180 Oak Bay Ave. collecting for the cause on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.

They hope to deliver the final product to the Dandelion Society the following weekend.

Council is on a path to up user fees for playing fields in Oak Bay after a review of regional versus local pricing.

Oak Bay Parks and Recreation Commission sought an analysis of perk permit fees during 2014 budget discussions, including the potential for different youth and adult rates. They found Oak Bay has lower rates than neighbouring communities, with a park permit rate of $14 for four hours, or $3.50 an hour, with no differentiation between youth and adult use.

To make things more complicated, two user groups pay additional costs for field maintenance due to historical arrangements. If council accepts the rate changes and other staff suggestions, those agreements

would terminate in September 2017 when the park permit fee increases would complete phasing in.

“The commission has proposed a nominal increase in park permit fees to be in line with Victoria and Esquimalt. Our fees have been the lowest compared to our neighbours for a long time,” said Coun. Tara Ney, liaison to the commission. “The increase in permit fees is about fairness, streamlining administration of field use, and good fiscal management.”

Staff recommended the phased approach to bring youth users to a base rate near $6.42 plus annual increases and adults groups to double the youth rate. Annual increases are expected of around two per cent.

“This in not a heavy-handed rate increase by any means, but

does work towards good fiscal management of the facility,” Ney said. “Though we have so far consulted with field user groups about this increase, we intend to consult further to ensure this park permit fee increase does not impose any unforeseen hardship on any one field user group.”

The recommendation would likely come up again for council during budget conversations in the new year after further discussion with field user groups.

“This is an opportunity to do some administrative cleanup, make it more streamlined,” Ney said. “It becomes a municipally wide policy if it’s supported.” [email protected]

A generator caught fire in the refrigerator compressor room at the Save-on-Foods at 1950 Foul Bay Rd. on Wednesday morning.

Three Victoria Fire Department trucks were at the scene at 6:37 a.m. and the fire was knocked down by 7:20 a.m., according to Graham Humber, dispatcher.

The level of damage was

minor and contained to the back room with the generator, said Overwaitea Food Group media relations.

The number of employees in the store at the time is unknown, but Humber said the fire was reported by a staff member. No injuries were reported from the incident.

The store opened around 9:30 a.m. as opposed to the usual 9 a.m.

The Oak Bay News is published every Wednesday and Friday by Black Press Ltd., 207A-2187 Oak Bay, B.C. V8R 1G1. Phone: 250-598-4123. Web: oakbaynews.com

The OAK BAY NEWS is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council.

Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Watch your speedCan anyone from the

municipality tell me why the speed reader boards were removed from Cadboro Bay Road by the golf course to the school zone at Willows?

The speed readers were a big help in reducing the high speeds by the golf course which had been deemed one of the deadliest stretches of road for deer incidents.

From day one, we as drivers were taught that school zones were always 30 km/h so the placing of these in school zones baffles me. Just like seeing three Oak Bay constables with a radar gun on Oak Bay Avenue in front of the municipal hall. Does anyone

really speed along there? Is it even possible?

G.R. LathamOak Bay

A shot in the darkThe letter in Friday’s

Oak Bay News (“Deer pose a serious threat to residents”) would be laughable if it weren’t frightening.

After expressing concern for the safety of pedestrians and dog walkers, the author proposes that licensed professional bowhunters be hired to shoot deer at night to avoid the “Bambi Brigade.” And how are these professional hunters expected to distinguish a pedestrian or dog from a deer in the dark? A

crossbow bolt is capable of penetrating a house wall. I would rather take my chances with rutting bucks than with humans bearing lethal weapons.

Audrey DriscollOak Bay

Attendance is keyObviously the big item on

the CRD in the near future is the sewage treatment plant. With two incumbent mayors running for chair of the CRD, I would think it prudent to see which of these two has attended the most CRD meetings on the sewage issue. To me the one who has should be the obvious choice.

OUR VIEW

YOUR VIEW

Shorter days canbring greater risk

With the first dusting of snow arriving just in time for Oak Bay’s Light Up festivities, it would be easy to look at the holiday season as a carefree time.

But this time of year can also pose a threat to pedestrians and motorists alike as the days grow ever shorter in the approach of the winter

solstice. Police and ICBC officials were passing out reflectors to UVic students last week to help spread the word on the need for pedestrians to be visible at night.

ICBC’s sobering statistics reveal a 74 per cent uptick in pedestrian or cyclist collisions with vehicles between October and January. December is the worst month for pedestrian injuries and deaths resulting from vehicle collisions, and most incidents happen on Fridays after 3 p.m. when people are often tired and in a hurry to get home.

In an average year, 2,400 pedestrians are injured and another 58 are killed in B.C. Almost one in five people killed in car crashes across B.C. are pedestrians and nearly three-quarters of crashes involving pedestrians happen at intersections.

ICBC road safety co-ordinator Colleen Woodger advises that eye contact is the best way to avoid unexpected encounters between motorists and pedestrians or cyclists. She was also quick to point out that road safety extends onto area buses.

“Some transit users don’t think they need reflective equipment, but every bus ride starts and ends with a walk.”

Winter brings additional challenges for drivers as well. According to an ICBC survey, nearly 40 per cent feel less confident driving during the winter.

Drivers are advised to allow at least twice the normal braking distance on wet or slippery roads and to make sure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions. Motorists can check the conditions before heading out on the road by visiting www.drivebc.ca.

The holiday season should be a time for sharing joy with friends and family. We can all do our part to help keep the season merry by taking the necessary precautions and leaving a few extra minutes to reach our destination safely.

Pedestrian collisions skyrocket over the winter

Mayor’s attention should be on Oak BayOak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen has

expressed interest in becoming chairman of the Capital Regional District board of directors.

During the last election, Mayor Jensen criticized  Cairine Green for her pledging to be a full-time mayor should she be elected. How is it now that the mayor has decided to devote more time to the mayoralty position and less to his legal profession. Is it because he will not be spending additional time administering the affairs of Oak Bay? Does he believes his time can be best served at the CRD or is it that he believes he has the insight and persuasive manner to almost immediately come to some kind of agreement with the CRD directors to approve a plan that he

will come up with for a location of the sewage treatment facility?

Mayor Jensen has been a councillor for 15 years and mayor for the past three. Did he all of a sudden have a stroke of genius that he did not possess over all those years, or, is it that he prefers to devote his time to CRD affairs and leave Oak Bay without appropriate leadership and direction.

As far back as 2010 his leadership skills appear to have been lacking. He had the opportunity to show leadership in the sewage treatment plant location selection process at that time. He was on council when the Upland sewer separation issue raised its head in 2010 but failed to this date to show any apparent

leadership on an issue that will cost Oak Bay taxpayers between $10 and $40 million. Should he become chair, can the CRD taxpayer expect the same level of leadership at CRD and Oak Bay?

During the recent election he commented on his accomplishments such as being responsible for raising the dam to improve water storage capacity. Sadly, he did not point to any other achievements over the past 18 years.

The other 23 CRD board members should have a close look at the leadership qualities of the candidates seeking the CRD chair before casting their ballots.

Christmas gets a jazzy touch

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

The Bob Watts Trio invites audiences on a wild Christmas ride to launch Jazz for Christmas 2.

“It’s just I’ve done jazz vespers at St. Philip’s 40 times, and the jazz vespers is all about sacred music … we’ve tried to maintain that standard. It’s sacred-based,” said Watts.

Watts is a veteran of the jazz scenes in both Victoria and Winnipeg. He created the monthly Jazz Vespers series at St. Philip Church in Oak Bay playing with notable Victoria musicians Joey Smith, Bruce Meikle, Tom Vickery, Karel Roessingh, Rob Cheramy and Tony Genge.

He’s the drummer, with Pablo Cardenas on piano and Ross Macdonald on bass – a team for over a year now.

The original Jazz for Christmas (2010) was the first of its kind, said Watts. It featured the purest of traditional holiday songs, such as Good King Wenceslas, reinterpreted as jazz standards.

“The first one was a pile of standard, standard,

Christmas carols because I love Christmas carols,” he said. “These are still traditional Christmas carols. People know them and they love them but they don’t hear them in this kind of format. It was amazing because it was a runaway success,” he said.

Then along came Cardenas and Macdonald.

Macdonald is a Victoria bassist whose musical skills have taken him around the world, playing music in Dubai at the Burj al Arab and cruising on the world’s only residence ship, The World. He currently plays the bass full time with the Naden Band.

Cardenas leads the West Coast Cuban Allstars and the Pablo Cardenas Afro-Latin Band. Since arriving in Canada from Cuba in 2010, he has been teaching and performed with Gergana

Velinova, Adonis Puentes, Maureen Washington, Phil Dyer, Damian Graham, Sara Vardy and Miguelito Valdes. His Project Fusion recently performed at the Victoria Jazz Festival 2012.

And he keeps the other two on their toes.

“He’s a joy to play with but you’ve got to be sharp,” Watts said.

“We play these songs and we play the melody so people know what the song is … When Pablo looks at his hands and smiles, it’s over, because Pablo’s about to launch you on a musical ride. He knows exactly where he’s going because he brings you back to the beginning. But you have to hang on for the ride.”

Jazz for Christmas 2 launches during the monthly jazz vespers for December at St. Philip where the CD was recorded live over a 36-hour period.

They whittled down a list of 35 carols for the album to: Deck the Halls, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Away In A Manger, Good Christian People Rejoice, Silent Night, Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy, Brightest and Best, Long Time Ago In Bethlehem and includes the bonus track, Hymn to Freedom.

The CD launch concert is Sunday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Philip Anglican Church, 2928 Eastdowne Rd. Admission by donation, both CDs will be available for purchase.

Did you know?n Bob Watts commutes to work in Winnipeg where he has an active jazz trio. Dec. 8 to 16 he and Pablo Cardenas will take Jazz for Christmas 2 to that city for six events, including one that will help Holy Trinity Anglican Church fund their street ministry.

Grinch prowling parking lotsOak Bay Police are again reminding

residents to lock their cars and take in valuables after a number of thefts from automobiles in various areas of Oak Bay last week.

The majority of thefts are from unlocked vehicles. Also, with the Christmas season upon us, police recommend not leaving gifts and packages visible in a vehicle while you shop. Thieves target vehicles for valuables especially around this time of year.

Tools stolen from truckPolice are investigating a brazen

daytime theft of tools from a truck parked on Theatre Lane Nov. 26.

An estimated $1,200 worth of tools were taken from an unlocked tool box that was in the back of a pickup truck. Oak Bay Police say possible suspects include a male and female in their 20s with dreadlocks and wearing “flowing” clothing. The investigation is ongoing.

Turkeys needed

The Salvation Army is reaching out to the community for turkey donations.

This Christmas season there is an even greater need for turkeys to feed all patrons that rely on the various meal programs provided by the Salvation Army Addictions and Rehabilitation Centre.

“We anticipate over 500 meals to be served out of the ARC kitchen on Christmas,” said Major Brain Slous, executive director of the

Johnson Street centre. The ARC is asking the

Dan EbenalNews Staff

The Oak Bay Barbers left the B.C. senior boys AAA volleyball championships the same way they came in, as the fourth-ranked team in the province.

West Kelowna’s Mt. Boucherie Bears avenged an earlier loss to sweep the Barbers 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 to claim the bronze at the AAA boys championships in Langley.

“It was clear that these two well-matched teams could beat each other on any given day,” said Oak Bay coach Al Carmichael, adding his team “had some good success attacking Mt. Boucherie on the outside, but were not able to find their connection in middle attack on Saturday.”

The Barbers fell 3-1 to the eventual champion Earl Marriott Mariners in the semifinals. The Surrey squad jumped out to a quick two-set lead 25-20, 25-14.

“A determined serving strategy of aggressive, riskier serves paid off in the third set,

which limited Earl Marriott’s attack options, and generated more blocks and digs,” said Carmichael.

Oak Bay won the third set 25-18. The seesaw fourth set saw the Barbers on top 22-20 before a Marriott block and transition attack put them ahead 23-22. Madhu McConnell scored a huge side-out kill for Oak Bay, however, a missed serve followed by a blocked attack gave the Mariners the win in the deciding set.

“While on the surface, the missed serve may have seemed critical, it was the high-risk, aggressive serving that gave Oak Bay the opportunity in the first place,” said Carmichael. “Playing a more mature, taller, stronger team, Oak Bay needed to play an aggressive style, and was almost rewarded.”

Oak Bay used their strategy of more aggressive serves to rally from a 2-0 deficit and edge Vancouver’s Gladstone Gladiators 3-2 in the quarter-finals.

“As well, setter Kyle Bourdon and middle hitter Nick Mickleberry started to connect on their timing, and earned many points over top of the smaller Gladstone blockers. Off the bench, Evan Reynolds was effective hitting on the outside,” said Carmichael, adding McConnell returned to the floor with renewed energy.

He credits the tough serving, led by Cole Beevor-Potts and Alan Lau, along with good defence and a strong transition attack for the deciding win.

Oak Bay opened the round-robin with losses to Earl Marriott and the Kelowna Owls and a 2-1 win over Mt. Boucherie. The Barbers easily downed Surrey’s Seaquam 3-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Grade 12 Bourdon made the first all-star team, Grade 12 libero Johnny Fitterer made the second all-star team, and Grade 11 power hitter McConnell was named to the third all-star team.

The Oak Bay Breakers struggled at the AAAA senior girls volleyball provincials, finishing in 12th spot in the tournament at Cranbrook’s Mt. Baker secondary school.

The Breakers opened the tournament with losses to Lord Tweedsmuir (25-12, 25-14) and Handsworth (25-22, 25-11) and a win over host Mt. Baker (29-27, 25-18). A 3-1 loss to Earl Marriott (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10) dropped the Breakers to the relegation side. Oak Bay stopped North Surrey (15-12, 25-18) before falling to Terry Fox (25-23, 25-19). The Breakers wrapped up the tournament with a 25-23, 25-23 loss to Mt. Boucherie.

As this is my first monthly column for the Oak Bay News, I would like to invite business owners to email me and let me know their news. Are you moving? Offering a new service? Have a new member of the team? Are you a new business and want our readers to know about you. Let me know and I will try and include it.

The big news for us came late this summer, with the Oak Bay News moving to the second floor of Athlone Court. We are now back in the centre of the community.

As we approach the festive period, all the retailers are gearing up for what we hope will be a busy and successful season. Don’t forget to try and buy local and avoid the stress of the city. The range of gifts and food items available in the area is stunning. Our retailers have searched far and wide for gifts to suit all your family and friends. You can visit the Avenue, but don’t forget the great range of shops around and about including those on Foul Bay Road, Cadboro Bay Road and Estavan Village. Please let me know of anything new happening in the business world up your street.

I took some time to visit a relatively new business just across our boundary with Victoria. A young man from Oak Bay, named Kai Du, has opened the cutting-edge Victoria Cyber Cafe on Fort Street. If you love the internet, playing games or just watching movies online, pay them a visit. You can get involved in tournament games and make

some new friends at the same time. If you are passing by, pop in and have a look.

A new business also just opened this week at the back of Athlone Court, called Coast Life and Style, where you will find some new treasures, many direct from Salt Spring Island. Also joining us in Athlone Court are new realtors Engel & Volkers Victoria, opened by founding partners Scott Piercy, James Le Blanc and Shelby Donald. “We are excited to bring a global

brand with local ownership to Oak Bay,” said Piercy. Visit www.luxurybchomes.com.

Also joining us in Oak Bay, with offices in Athlone Court, are McElvaine Investment Management Ltd., an investment management firm which advises The McElvaine Investment Trust, a mutual fund that Tim McElvaine founded in 1996.  The Globe and Mail recently described him as one of Canada’s best known value investors. In addition, McElvaine is currently a director of Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. and Glacier Media Inc. and has served on the boards of Sun-Rype Products Ltd. and Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods Inc.  McElvaine Investment Management’s website can be found at www.avaluefund.com

The Village Walk In on Oak Bay Avenue should be welcoming The Good Earth Coffee House in the new year, date still to be confirmed.

Safety Tip:On average, there are almost double the crashes resulting in injury or fatality in B.C. due to driving too fast for conditions in December. In poor conditions, slow down, increase your following distance and give

yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

New Year’s Resolution: Hot rides and buys for 2015Here are what I consider to be five important cars for 2015.

Mazda MX-5Over the last few years Mazda has been introducing vehicles with its new Skyactiv technology but there is one car that will signify the culmination of all the things Mazda does well, the next generation MX-5 (Miata). The MX-5 will come in 2015 as a 2016 model and all eyes are on Mazda to see what it can deliver. The bodywork is more dramatic and having seen it in person, the dimensions look fanatic but the new front grille might take a while to adapt too. The two-seat cockpit is roomier, thanks to a wider body and longer wheelbase but the overall length is 105mm shorter and 20mm lower. The 2.0L Skyactiv direct injection 4-cylinder will power this lightweight car and power will go to the rear wheels though a 6-speed manual transmission. Engine output has not been announced, neither has the price, but expect the car to be competitive with the 2015 model on price.

Ford ExplorerThe sixth generation Ford Explorer will arrive in 2015 as a 2016 model, now with new 2.3L EcoBoost engine available on the base and XLT trim. This replaces the older 2.0L Ecoboost and provides a 270hp, a 13 per cent bump over the last version. The 290hp 3.5L V6 is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. Ford claims that styling is the number one purchase consideration so the shape was retained but new grille and LED headlamps help refresh the look.

This sixth generation Explorer marks the 25th anni-versary of the iconic SUV, with over 350,000 sold in Canada so far.

2015 Jeep RenegadeThere is no question that the merger of Fiat and Chrysler has helped to introduce many new vehicles. The small car segment is a perfect example; the Fiat

500 and its variations has been a plus for Chrysler’s bottom line. Built in Europe on the Fiat 500L platform, this smaller Jeep Renegade replaces the Compass and Patriot models. Powered by either a 160hp, 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder or a larger 184hp, 2.4L 4-cylinder, Jeep claims that this compact crossover is still a capable vehicle because of two available all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems.

The standard models will be available with front-wheel-drive (FWD), with either a 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic transmission. Styling is all-American; the signature Jeep grille is mar-ried perfectly into the boxy design, as too are other Jeep styling cues. The interior is has a rugged, yet upscale design that features all of Jeep’s latest technology, including the award winning Uconnect infotainment system. Pricing has not been announced but expect it shortly as it is due at dealerships very soon.

Honda HR-VComing in 2015 is another SUV, smaller than the CR-V, helping to define the new subcompact SUV market. This little runabout is built off the excellent Honda Fit platform and will include many of the features that make that car a standout. The first is the interior of the HR-V. It will also feature Honda’s Magic Seats that flip

and fold for amazing versatility. The same 1.8L 4-clinder engine with 138hp will power this vehicle, either with FWD or AWD, through a continuously variable trans-mission or 6-cpeed manual. Pricing will be introduced closer to the introduction this coming spring. Built in Mexico, the HR-V will give Honda the same leg up that the original CR-V did for the small SUV segment.

Chevrolet VoltIt might surprise many people that the best selling electric car in Canada is the Chevrolet Volt, not the sexy Tesla Model S. There are many reasons for this, mainly the fact that the Volt provides all-electric transporta-tion for 65 kms but with the aid of a small 4-cylinder generator to extend the range over 300 kms. This car has all of the upside of an electric car with none of the range limiting restrictions. In 2015, Chevrolet will intro-duce the second generation of Chevrolet Volt, one that hopes to improve on the usability of the car in terms of comfort and electric driving range. General Motors will showcase the next generation car in January at the Detroit Auto Show and the company’s CEO has stated that the new car “will store more energy in its battery pack with fewer cells, yet go further on a charge.” General Motors claims that 80 per cent of current Volt owners commute entirely on electric power, so any improvement to range will help increase this number. The Volt isn’t a huge volume seller for General Motors but this new model will help the company to showcase what it can do technologically. General Motors has the capability to produce some the most advanced cars on the road.

You can pay a fortune for a premium brand but you needn’t break the bank to buy wheels with style.

Chrysler 200 (starting MSRP $19,945)Chrysler stunned the marketplace with the introduction of its completely new 200 Sedan, resetting benchmarks for style, panache, and performance within a fiercely competitive segment. And with a starting MSRP of just $19,945, the 200 undercuts many of its competitors, yet its real strength is found in its range of trim levels and power options. The base engine is a 2.4L four-cylinder affair that feeds 184 horsepower to the front wheels through a segment-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission. Going upscale in the 200 brings with it Chrysler’s powerful 295 horsepower Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine paired with the nine-speed autobox and all-wheel-drive traction. Standard features include eight airbags, Keyless Enter ‘n Go, and Chrysler’s Uconnect 3.0 multimedia centre. Options include Blind Spot Monitor-ing, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, and Active Park Assist. With four distinct trim levels, the Chrysler 200 can match the wherewithal of many pocket-books while employing the latest in safety and technology to deliver an affordable upscale driving experience.Fuel Economy:2.4L I-4 10.2L/6.4L100km city/highway3.6L V6 12.4L/7.5L100km city/highway

Acura TLX (base MSRP $34,900) The four-door Acura TLX Sedan replaces the former TSX and TL sport sedans, merging their respective strengths into a single product positioned as the brand’s mid-level contender. With a base sticker of $34,900, the TLX delivers plenty of sport-inspired luxury built around a 206 horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder power plant fused to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Propulsion is directed frontward unless the V6 Technolo-gy Package and Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system with torque vectoring are opted for. In which case, all four wheels share in 290 horsepower produced by the 3.5L SOHC i-VTEC mill. A sophisticated nine-speed automatic transmission further contributes to the engaging performance of the V6-powered TLX. In addition to a more rigid body structure, the TLX provides increased safety and collision avoidance with the use of technology such as Jewel Eye LED headlights, Lane Departure Warn-ing, Forward Collision Warning, and Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Warning. Comfort and convenience essentials include the availability of premium 10-speaker au-dio along with voice-activated navigation.Fuel Economy: 2.4L I-4 9.6L/6.6L/100km city/highway3.5L V6 11.2L/6.9L/100km city/highway

Audi A3 (base MSRP $31,100) Looking remarkably like the highly success-ful Audi A4 Sedan despite casting a shadow 245mm shorter, the new A3 Sedan is sure to capture the attention of entry-level Audi buyers that scorn the A3’s hatchback design despite the vehicle’s praiseworthy

driving dynamics and general practicality. Pricing for the new A3 Sedan starts at $31,100 with the 170 horsepower 1.8L TFSI I-4 power plant turning the front wheels through the auspices of Audi’s six-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. Upping the ante to $35,900 secures a 220 horsepower 2.0L TFSI I-4 connected to all four corners via Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive technology. Diesel power is also available in the A3 Se-dan, though paired only with front-wheel-drive. Option combinations include Audi’s Styling Package, Navigation Package, and their sport-oriented S line Package. Audi has always been a technology leader, and the A3 Sedan shares in that reputation with a vast array of onboard safety and protection systems.Fuel Economy: TBD

Mercedes-Benz C 300 Sedan - C400 Sedan (base MSRP C 300 $43,000 - C400 $51,400)Despite slotting beneath the venerable E-Class in the Mercedes-Benz hierarchy of sedans, the new C-Class Sedan takes on a notably formal appearance and a more upscale demeanor for 2015. It’s also lighter and more powerful thanks to the extensive use of aluminum and a pair of revised engines. The C 300 receives a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 power plant capable of 241 horsepower. Need more oomph? A 3.0L twin-turbo V6 places 329 horsepower under the hood of the C 400. Both engines feed all four wheels through Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive technology. The sole use of 4MATIC is a Canadian-market exclusive. Along with new sheet metal and a lavishly-appointed cabin, the C-Class is equipped with the latest generation of COMMAND by Mercedes-Benz. This highly sophisticated infotainment/navigation system is lifted directly from the S-Class flagship. Audiophiles will appreciate the availability of Burmester surround-sound audio components, which are hand-made in Germany. Fuel Economy: C 300 10.9L/7.5L/100km city/highway C 400 11.1L/8.4L/100km city/highway

BMW 228i – M235i (base MSRP 228i $36,000 - M235i $48,750)Reminiscent of the legendary 1968 BMW 2002 Coupe, today’s 228i and M235i Coupes combine the outstanding driving dynamics of the stubby BMW 1-Series Coupe, which they replace, with a sleeker, more aggressive interpretation of the iconic brand’s ethos. The 228i is the tamer of the pair, but with 241 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, its 2.0L twin-turbocharged I-4 engine delivers highly spirited performance nonetheless. If outright exhilaration is the target, the M235i is the ticket. Its twin-tur-bocharged 3.0L I-6 mill produces 322 horse-power and 332 lb.-ft. of endless torque. For true driver-oriented motoring, both vehicles can be fitted with a 6-speed manual gear-box in place of the new 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive traction is also available, but can only be paired with the automatic transmission. With the availability of a manual gearbox backed by a choice of turbocharged power plants, the new BMW 2-Series may just be the “ultimate driving machine.”Fuel Economy:228i 9.1L/5.6L/100km city/highwayM235i 11.2L/7.1L/100km city/highway

Bill SmithFor the Oak Bay News

If the weather marred your meteor watching in November, don’t worry. The December Geminids and Ursids offer up two more chances to see meteor showers this year. The constellation Gemini, namesake of the Geminids and location of the meteor shower radiant, is easy to spot above Orion, high in the southern sky looking towards Port Angeles. Look for the most Geminids – even before midnight – on the peak nights of Dec. 13-14 and 14-15.

A week later, under darker new moon conditions, look for the Ursids radiating from the bowl of Ursa Minor, or the Little Dipper. The best time to view this shower is from after midnight until dawn on Dec. 22 and 23.

Start the month with a pretty view of the moon near the Pleiades star cluster on Dec. 5. Look east towards Mount Baker a few hours after sunset. You can’t miss the two objects. Then, set your alarm clock for an hour before sunrise and catch Jupiter above the moon on Dec. 11 through 13 in the southwest sky out past Metchosin. Jupiter rises in the Eastern sky, towards Mount Baker, by about 10 p.m. and it’s visible until dawn.

From Dec. 18 to 20, look southeast towards Seattle a little closer to sunrise to catch the slender crescent moon near Saturn.

Three more planets grace the evening sky. Venus is below the moon, near the horizon, on Dec. 23. Mars is below the moon on Dec. 25. And Mercury peeks over the horizon on New Year’s Eve.

Uranus and Neptune are among the stars of the constellations Aquarius and Pisces in the southern sky over the Olympic Mountains. You’ll need a telescope to spot Neptune, but you just might find blue-green Uranus through binoculars as soon as it’s dark after sunset.

Finally, there are two comets to try for through telescopes. Comet Siding Spring in Ophiucus and Comet PanSTARRS in Sculptor. Try looking in the early evening. Both are low on the western

horizon past Metchosin. You can learn more about all the solar system

bodies at solarsystem.nasa.gov. And you can learn about all of NASA’s missions at www.nasa.gov.

You can learn much more about our night sky and see our new “real time” Cattle Point Night Sky map at: www.cattlepointstarpark.org.

Dark skies to all friends of Cattle Point Star Park.

Summary is from the transcript of “What’s Up In December 2014” by NASA announcer and astronomer Jane Houston Jones with specific permission for localization to Cattle Point Urban Star Park and the Oak Bay News.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T he Island Equipment Owners Associations’ 16th annual Truck Light Convoy and Food Drive, is on Saturday, Dec. 6th, 2014.

Every year the Island Equipment Owners Association gets together, decorating their commercial trucks in the Christmas Spirit with thousands of lights, and then travel as a convoy through the streets of the Capital Region. In past years there have been up to 80 trucks participating. This event supports the Mustard Seed Food Bank, Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund Society and the Sidney Lions Food Bank. As there is not an opportunity to stop and collect food items along the route, multiple donation drop-off sites will be set up along the entire route. As a participant in the Truck Light Convoy it is overwhelming to see, that regardless of the weather, thousands of people line the streets with anticipation of the big trucks all decorated in Christmas Lights. Children from 2-92 cannot help but feel the Christmas Spirit as the convoy rolls by. People on the streets

and in the apartments above, are all cheering and

applauding the colorfully displayed big trucks. Not only is there excitement for the children, but I think there are just as many adults pumping their arms for the big horns to blow. As loud as they are it is part of the excitement of the Truck Light Convoy. At 5:45 the trucks leave Ogden Point, arrive in Oak Bay Village at 6:30, at 7:00 they arrive at Yates and Blanshard, 7:30 they will arrive at Helmcken and Trans Canada overpass, at 8:00 they will arrive atGoldstream and Veterans Memorial Parkway and at 8:30 they arrive at Western Speedway. Santa will arrive at Western Speedway by truck! We always caution the public that timing is approximate as the logistics of organizing this event is dependent on a number of factors. Everyone is invited to gather at Western Speedway for the conclusion of this fun event. Admission to the Western Speedway is by cash donation, or a non-perishable food item. Coffee, hot dogs and hot chocolate are available for the public, by donation.

This is a must see event for the whole family, especially children! We sincerely appreciate your continued support. See you there! Alan BarrPresident,Island Equipment Owners Association

Wishing everyone a safe and joyful holiday season.

When it comes time to buy a new home – or at least a home that’s new to you – you want to do everything you can to ensure the purchase is sound.

Likely the biggest purchase an individual or family will make, prospective buyers must not only consider factors such as location, transportation, schools and whether the couch will fit, but also the physical state of the home itself.

Enter the home inspector.A trained, experienced

home inspector examines a home’s “systems” – roof, building membrane, foundation, electrical and plumbing, for example – looking for problems or potential problems, explains Oak Bay’s Martin Kent, of Fairhome Building Inspections.

“Basically we look at as much as we can see,” says Kent, who brings 10 years experience in the industry, on top of many years in home construction and renovation, and as an electrician.

For things they can’t see, like the space behind drywall and plaster, the inspector relies on state-of-the-art tools that can detect issues such as moisture. Following a comprehensive evaluation, “if we’re concerned there’s

a problem going on, we recommend further study from a specialist.”

Common concerns in the older Oak Bay homes include asbestos around the pipes and in the attic, insulation and perimeter drain problems, often caused by tree roots growing into the old clay drainage tiles. Old oil tanks, including those buried underground, can also crop up as potential issues.

While the length of an inspection can vary according to the size,

age and condition of the property, Kent allocates about three hours, then another hour for the post-inspection walk-through with the potential buyers, who also receive a full written report.

While inspectors are not permitted to provide quotes for how much a problem may take to address, they may provide a ballpark idea of what an issue might cost – the typical price range of removing asbestos insulation from an attic, for example.

While all home inspectors in B.C. must be licensed, home buyers should also ask a few additional questions when choosing the right inspector for their job: Do they belong to a professional organization like CAHPI, the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors? What kind of education and experience do they have? How long have they been in the industry? Are they insured (required by CAHPI)?

“I think the part I like the most [about being a home inspector] is helping people,” Kent says. Many times, “people don’t know what they’re getting into, so it’s nice to be able to tell them the good and the bad about a place. It’s also interesting. Some of these old homes are really interesting to look at. You get a sense of the history and how people lived.”
