Caelen St. Bright has seen a change in her daughter. Her 10-year-old’s confidence and comfort speaking in public

is growing day-by-day. While Hannah wasn’t a shy child, her increased confidence since starting a Junior Toastmasters program, has already paid dividends.

“As a parent watching from the sidelines, it is incredible to see,” St. Bright, an Oak Bay resident said. “At the beginning none of the children volunteered for anything and now we don’t have enough

time in the meetings to do all the things they want to do.”

For a month now Hannah, a home-schooled Grade 5 student has been taking the Youth Leadership Program working on communication skills and leadership exercises from the longtime program known for mentorship in public speaking, speech delivery and interaction with the

public. Under the tutelage of 10-year Toastmasters veteran John Sherber, the improvements haven’t gone unnoticed.

“Some of them, when they walk in the door, need their mother,” Sherber said. “When they walk in the door two to three meetings in, they are standing up and running the meeting.”

The one-and-a-half hour Saturday meetings at the Oak Bay Library started in March and continue on through May 3. Sherber said giving youth the confidence to have a voice is an important step on the road to a brighter future for them. The organization, which now boasts more than 13,000 clubs around the world, and more than 40 in Greater Victoria, can also help youth succeed – and Sherber hopes his volunteering to teach the program makes a difference in the children’s lives, just as the mentorship he received growing up helped him.

A Canadian Forces peacekeeper and a Syrian-Canadian journalist who have never met could share commonalities.

Unveiling The Middle East, an evening of poetry, music and stories, pairs Ed Brown, a soldier coming off tours in Yugoslavia, Syria and Turkey, with Ghada Alatrash, a translator and journalist from Syria, for an event proving the language of poetry can cross borders.

“Poetry seems to be universal, something that delves deeper into the human mind and speaks to all,” Alatrash said. “I’m trying to amplify voices from my side of the world to help represent, instead of misrepresent, and help create bridges between the East and West.”

Alatrash, who left Syria at 13, said she was taught western songs, poetry and literature growing up there and hopes to do the same for the West, taking to the stage hosted by Victoria poet laureate Linda Rogers.

“I am that amalgam of East and West, I am Canadian in ideology and Arab in genes and blood,” she said. “That mix puts the responsibility on my shoulders – the role of connecting the two.”

While Alatrash has not yet met Brown, she will soon share the stage

with the man, a former Middle East peacekeeper who uses poetry in a different way: to help battle Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Coming off the last tour, I was full of anger and hate and misplaced feelings,” he said. “I didn’t know how to deal with it. Poetry helped me deal with my PTSD and process everything from it.”

With dark days upon him, the 19-year Canadian Forces member,

who was medically released in 2011, turned to his passion, sharing stories and poetry, penning A Soldier’s Fortune, a book of intimate stories and poems that may have saved his life.

“I want to get out notice to the public of what we go through as soldiers and let veterans know they are not alone,” he said. “I was down that path, I fought back and now I’m happy. I’m always going to have PTSD and certain issues, but I can deal with it and cope with it better.”

While he knows they come from different

places, Brown is looking forward to sharing his poems and stories with Alatrash and hopes others will join him.

“It’s good to mix with anyone, mixing with other cultures, other than our own,” he said. “It’s good to see and explore different cultures.”

The event is on Saturday, April 26 at the Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell St. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door. For more information contact 250-380-0998.

There is a new chief in town. Mayor Nils Jensen swore Andrew

Brinton in as the new Chief Constable of the Oak Bay Police, welcoming the 13th chief of the department since it’s inception in 1906.

“It’s a great day, it starts a new chapter in the 108-year history of our great police

force. This new chief brings a real community-minded spirit to the job,” Jensen said. “We are community-based policing as a philosophy and he fits right in with that philosophy and it is going to be great to have him on board, working not only here in Oak Bay but connecting us to the region.”

Brinton replaces Mark Fisher, who spent just over two years with OBPD before taking a post in Nanaimo with the RCMP. Brinton,

coming off 14 years in Powell River, said he is looking forward to integrating into a community not unlike the small-town feel of his previous post.

“(This) is huge. I have worked in small towns when you are the policeman on the Friday night and standing with the client base at the grocery store line the next day,” he said. “It’s something that I have always enjoyed. Some people shy away from it, I just enjoy being part of the community.”

Brinton’s career spans posts in Nanaimo, Parksville, Boston Bar, Whistler and Burnaby among others, including more than four years with the West Coast Marine Unit, an experience he said he will draw from working in a coastal community. The avid cyclist said he looks forward bringing those experiences and

more to help in his new position, where he hopes to work with organizations outside the department, including community groups and services that make a difference in the lives of residents across Oak Bay.

“We are not just here for the traditional policing roles,” he said. “I see us playing a role in the big picture of crime reduction.”

Brinton plans to spend the early part of his tenure working on learning more about the municipality, getting a handle

on priority areas, key issues and spending time with the residents of the community where he signed a new five-year contract.

“I play hockey, and the first time you go into a dressing room (I find) a lot of people have not had social contact with a policeman before,” Brinton said. “It’s fun to see the walls come down, the barriers come down. After a couple of ice times, you are just one of the guys. I think that’s so important in policing.”

Jensen sees parallels in the community-

minded policing approach of Powell River including its size and the number of police, which is in part why he believes Brinton was chosen by the police board.

“Policing right across the region is about making better, safer communities and he has the skill and experience to do that,” the mayor said. “He brings a new energy and a new perspective. We are certainly looking forward to working very closely with him.”

Hannah said she is grateful for that mentorship and already feels more comfortable in public settings and hopes to use the tools she develops now when she enters the job force.

“I enjoy it. It helps me with my public speaking and makes me more confident,” she said. “It has gotten much easier than the first day when I was quite nervous.”

The programming has also benefitted her siblings, both of whom are also involved and Hannah plans to continue working on the craft moving forward and recommends it for people of all ages.

“I think it would really help if they are nervous or not confident enough in doing stuff,” she said. “I think it would help a lot of other kids with their public speaking, and keep going (up) from there.”

Teachers across the province began job action, targeting administrative duties on Wednesday – action that will have little effect on students, and if the president of the Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association is right, it will end soon.

“I don’t see us staying in this Stage 1 very long,” said Benula Larsen. “Either we’re going to get something or we’re going to increase. For parents, for public, for the teachers, we don’t want to start September again without knowing what’s happening. Or just sitting at the table and hoping? We can’t keep hoping. We have to do something.”

The move comes in response to a March 6 B.C. Teachers’ Federation vote, in which 89 per cent of members waiting on long-stalled contract negotiations supported potential job action, the first since a three-day walk out in March 2012.

Stage 1 is strictly administrative. Teachers will continue to teach, write report cards, communicate with parents, and participate

in voluntary extracurricular activities.

They won’t undertake any mandated supervision of students outside of regularly scheduled classes except as set out by an essential services order (in the Greater Victoria School District, such supervision falls outside teacher responsibility, so students will feel no effect); they will abstain from attending any meetings with management other than those with worksite Joint Health and Safety Committees; they will no longer provide or receive principals or administrators with any routine printed, written, or electronic communication; nor will they arrive at a worksite prior to one hour before class or stay more than one hour late.

“It can’t continue like this,” Larsen added. “We’re not going to go another school year like this. It’s either this or we’re going to walk out and I’m hearing from teachers that this time, there’s no three days, or one day – no, no, no, no – we’re going to walk out until we get what we want. That’s what teachers are saying.”

What are some common myths about retirement living?

“I’m afraid I will lose my independence!”In fact the opposite is really true. You have choices to do what you want, when you want. You decide which suite you will call home. You go to meals when you want and join in activities that appeal to you. Really, the choices are up to you!

“I think if I move into a retirement community I won’t be able to do any of the hobbies and activities I enjoy!” In reality, with the multitude of sta on duty to look a er resi-dents’ needs – cooking, cleaning, driving, maintenance jobs, etc. – you now have more time to do the things you want and love to do.

“I don’t want to be alone in this new place!”As we age, our lives change – o en in unexpected ways. You don’t have to be alone in facing these changes. It can be very comforting to know that almost all residents living in senior living communi-ties have faced the same fears and concerns you have. Senior liv-ing communities are a viable option and can enhance the quality of life, empowering you to live your life the way you choose to.

COMMUNITY NEWSIN BRIEF

This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime.

The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the BC coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years.

My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed.

The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits:

There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new design. This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery.

An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day

of very dirty coke (much fouler than BC coal) which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power.

The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada.

Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in BC for five years. Operations at the

refinery will result in more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in BC with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province.

The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year.

Unfortunately our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that. We have a solid business plan and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We

are currently moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work.

We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations. Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and US government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-of-the-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in BC so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in BC. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined

fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on Northern Gateway next month.

YOUR VIEW

Walking isn’t hard. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right

foot. It’s very natural. What isn’t natural is realizing that

as a pedestrian you are a moving target for vehicles, even though you think you have the right of way.

There you are, dressed in dark clothing at night, with limited ambient lighting, running across a wet street to meet friends, or running from your car across the middle of the street to the grocery store in mid-a fternoon traffic, without using the crosswalk.

What are you thinking? That 4,000 pound steel object hurtling towards you should give you pause for reflection.

There are more crosswalks in a 100-metre stretch of Oak Bay Avenue than most similar streets in any municipality in the CRD. Why

people won’t take advantage of a legal, marked crossing is beyond comprehension.

You might not realize it, but there is an offence for jaywalking when a marked crosswalk

is available nearby.

When you cite convenience as your excuse, know that we can cite you for this offence.

Section 133 of the Motor Vehicle Act states:

Where a pedestrian is

instructed or permitted by a traffic control signal to enter or to proceed across a roadway, he or she must do so;

(a) at an intersection, only in a marked or unmarked crosswalk,

and(b) at a place other than an

intersection, in the vicinity of which there is a marked crosswalk, only in the crosswalk.

Just because you are a pedestrian doesn’t make you right all the time.

You have rules to follow just like a vehicle driver.

Make yourself visible. Make yourself known. Make sure you survive that walk to the store, or the pub or the dry cleaners.

Walk smart. Walk with purpose. Be a wary pedestrian, not

the walking dead.

Const. Rick Anthony is Community Liaison Officer with the Oak Bay Police Department.

Take your responsibility as a pedestrian seriously

Oak Bay heritage is a great value

As council liaison to Oak Bay Heritage, I want to thank the Oak Bay News and reporter Arnold Lim for the recent coverage on heritage protection and the homeowners who have chosen to apply for designation.

Articles such as this one illustrate a positive approach to informing and educating Oak Bay

homeowners about the value of heritage protection.

I also want to acknowledge the hard work, concerted effort and shared knowledge and expertise of our Oak Bay Heritage Commission and Foundation volunteers who believe that heritage designation and registration are effective tools available to homeowners who want to preserve, restore or improve their homes for the future.

In the 2013 Heritage Strategic Plan, we learned that Oak Bay residents value these older

homes as significant assets to preserving our neighbourhoods, streetscapes and significant places, helping to make Oak Bay a unique residential area within the urban core.

We are grateful to residents such as Mr. and Mrs. Eadie who clearly value the past through working with the Heritage Commission and the municipality to preserve their home as an Oak Bay landmark.

As Oak Bay Heritage volunteers know, there are hundreds of other homes in Oak Bay that could benefit from registration or designation. We hope that if owners want to learn more, they will contact members of the Heritage Commission or Foundation for details.

The Commission Chair is Bronwyn Taylor and the Foundation Chair is Robert Taylor and they can be reached through the Oak Bay municipal hall.

For Nelson Homes, building a pre-fabricated home works in the best interests of the environment as much as it does the customer.

Nelson Homes’ building philosophy begins with the simple concept of using a renewable resource: wood. Waste-prevention measures are in place at the company’s factory, where employees work in a toxic- and substance-free environment.

Throughout the building process, all culled materials are sorted and reintroduced into the production cycle when feasible, and because of Nelson Homes’ pre-manufactured components, your jobsite will stay clean and efficient. There is minimal site waste to clean up, which results in less material going to landfills.

The company’s designers are skilled at incorporating green concepts into the design of homes. You can go green in countless places around your home, including your walls, insulation, window treatments, sidings and foundations. You can even consider alternative ways to power your home, via solar panels and other applications.

The Nelson Homes panelized walls offer a complete framing system, built with top-grade Canadian kiln-dried lumber. The panels come in pre-built sections, and have framed-in window and door openings, and sheathing applied. This ensures quick framing time, lower labour cost and less material waste.

Other advantages in this pre-fab process include:

• Components that are factory-built using state-of-the-art technology to ensure accuracy

• Components that are numbered and cross-referenced for quick assembly at your site

• Delivery to your building site within weeks of ordering

• The ability to be your own builder• The ability to build green

Roof trusses, wall panels and stairs are manufactured in factories, keeping the lumber from the elements of nature. This

means straighter components due to less warping, twisting and swelling. With straighter walls you’ll have fewer problems with nail pops, ceiling cracks or corner cracks. Your windows, and doors will fit properly, requiring fewer repairs and adjustments later on.

In addition, less labour is required to erect the structure; independent research studies show a reduction of as much as 60 per cent of framing time. Your home will be to lock-up stage quickly, reducing the chance of weather delays and theft.

Manufacturing adheres to strict building codes, components are thoroughly inspected at every stage. Specialized computer equipment ensures precision-built components.

What is Included:• Floor System – joists or trusses, beam,

teleposts and fir plywood sub-floor• Roof System – trusses, gables, ladders,

OSB sheathing, hardware, roof vents, soffit, fascia and shingles

• Wall Panels are built in sections for both exterior and interior. Ready for wiring, walls come complete with framed window and door openings, and OSB sheathing applied. House wrap (an air barrier) is also included in the package.

• Vinyl windows • Exterior doors• Vinyl siding and trim kit• Insulation – fibreglass wall insulation, and

polythelene vapour barrier.• Drywall – aqua board, tape, corner bead,

joint cement• Interior finish includes stairs, doors and

jambs, locksets, casing, shelving, and hardware. Interior wood turned railings may be included.

New Golf family offers quality at the right priceThe new seventh generation VW Golf arrives later this spring with a 2015 model designation.I have already had a chance to drive three examples of the new edition in Europe so I can offer you a sneak peek at what this very popular VW has going for it before it arrives here. The all-new car might look like the previous Golf but it is built on a platform that is shared across the VW group and represents a massive investment for the German manufacturer. This new platform, called MQB, enables the engineers to build all kinds of new products, be they bigger, smaller, wider or taller. What went into the design of the Golf represents a big step forward for Volkswagen as the latest model is 100kg lighter than the outgoing car but it is bigger, stiffer and safer than before. LooksIt could be argued that the new Golf looks too much like the older model but interacting with this new product quickly displays a level of refinement and finish that might be found in an upmarket Audi product. (This MQB platform is shared with the all-new Audi A3). Starting at $18,995, the base Golf is priced right in the heart of the compact market but this car sports a fully independent suspension, direct injection turbocharged engine and more power than much of the competition, at 170hp. The Golf GTI is my personal favourite due to the bad-boy looks, bigger wheels and improved engine and suspension. It starts at $27,995. The hot-hatch Golf R will arrive about a year after

the Golf and GTI and will come in at roughly the same price as the last R, right around $40,000 but fully loaded.InsideThe upside to having a slightly bigger platform is interior space and the cabin of the latest Golf does feel bigger, especially side-to-side. The centre console is wider and the dash is fitted with all-new switches and dials. Once again, the feel and look is almost Audi quality. Having a chance to drive the base car all the way up to the Golf R showed just how good the base car is. The only difference is the sportier seats

and splashier trim on the more expensive cars, but the overall design is the same from car to car and all exemplify the simple, yet elegant approach VW takes with all its interiors. DriveGone is the old 2.5-litre. 5-cylinder, replaced by an all-new 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder base engine. This engine too produces 170 but is more efficient, responsive and features state of the art technology. In the compact set, this kind of technology is unheard of at the roughly $19,000 asking price. Taking it up a notch is the legendary Golf GTI, now with 210hp from a new 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder. I had a shot driving this last year in Austria and I can say without question, this combination is fantastic. The Golf R is the ultimate Golf with roughly 300hp and an all wheel drive system. The same system is used in the all-new Audi S3 but this car comes fully loaded and will be roughly $4,000 less than the starting price of

the S3. A smart shopper might want to wait for the R over the S.

Verdict

This new Golf family is set to take on some very established players in the compact segment. With a hatchback design, this car has always been a more practical design than sedans like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. With superb road manners, advanced engines and German engineering, the starting price looks like a winner. A big reason for this is the Golf is assembled in Mexico and these cars come into Canada without duty, (Thanks NAFTA) so VW added more content and kept the price low. The good news for diesel lovers is that the TDI en-gine will be available right out of the gate and now represents about 50 percent of Golf sales. This engine too has been modified to make it as fuel efficient as possible. All told, the Golf is more polished car than much of the competition and offers a trim level and price for all types of buyers, from basic to flat-out performance.

Imports provide most sizzle in New YorkThere was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show.It seems the Big Four shot their lightning bolts at the preceding Detroit and Los Angeles auto extravaganzas and left it to the import manufacturers to dazzle here.Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano. The mid-size model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-gener-ation. The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerang-shaped tail lights ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals.Inside, up to five passen-gers can expect more of a luxury ride than they might have enjoyed in the outgoing version – heated and cooled front seats will impress those upfront. The trend in this segment to include huge sunroofs continues here.Under the hood, Nissan stays with the trusty 3.5-li-

tre six-cylinder powerplant matched to a continuously variable transmission. Expect to see the Murano in the showrooms at the tail end of the year. Before moving on, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept should be mentioned as it offers a clue to what the new Maxima might resem-ble. And boy, is it a looker despite the horrible orange colour of the show car! It too features a panoramic roof stretching almost from the windshield to the rear window. A production mod-el version is expected later in the year, which suggests the L.A. show might benefit from that timetable.Any new Toyota Camry is an instant hit, especially in North America where it’s been the best selling car

for 12 years. Despite that, the Japanese manufacturer launched an all-new 2015 model, just three years after introducing a redesign. It incorporates design touches now appearing in sibling models, including a deeper grille that more resembles an upmarket Lexus. Interior materials are upgraded and a large central display matches the design trend of its compet-itors. Two trims are added; a sporty XSE with some luxury touches and a Hybrid SE. Toyota sticks with its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, and 3.5-litre, six-cylinder engines plus its Hybrid Synergy Drive.Hyundai would like to put a serious dent in the Toyota Camry success story with its own mid-size sedan – the redesigned Sonata. It’s likely the introduction of a sharp looking Sonata in 2011 helped prompt Toyota into taking a serious look at upping the ante in the Camry. Other compet-itors have also risen to the challenge. Now the seventh-generation, newly styled, sharper looking 2015 Sonata raises the bar again with improved ride and handling plus advanced driver assistance and safety

equipment. Unlike the Camry, the Sonata stays with purely four-cylinder engines. Stan-dard is a 2.4-litre power

plant and a turbocharged 2.0 is an option. The one domestic man-ufacturer that did show up with something more

exciting than the rest was Jeep, which introduced the compact Renegade. It is the iconic brand’s first foray into the small SUV segment. Its funky looks and fuel efficiency should make it an urban dweller hit but it also boasts best-in-class off-road capability, which may just bring in buyers from the growing outdoor adventure seekers. Two engine choices: a

2.4-litre Tigershark engine with MultiAir2 paired to the segment’s first nine-speed automatic transmission, or a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine with six-speed man-ual transmission.Prices for all of the above closer to launch when pencils have been sharp-ened and each figure out how they can undercut competitors.

Safe on two wheels Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear is vital to your safety. Just ask someone who has had a spill. Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concus-sion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed at her condition. It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life. She was wearing leathers, gloves, protective boots, and a helmet. Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point. Those who have experi-enced an accident weren’t thinking, “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops.”When I ride, I’m in full garb. Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately. I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it. Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road. That’s a helmet. If you’re not going to invest any money in anything else, protect your noggin. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet. Make sure it fits properly. Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly. I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you.You only have one head. Use it and protect it.Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile. There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent. Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case. Some jackets come with armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t. I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in. Pants: Leather, textile and

Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted. I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection. Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots. That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather footwear that at least covers your ankle-bone.What’s great about the in-dustry now is the availabil-ity of cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protect-ed. Bonus.Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists. Some gloves also have re-inforced points with carbon fibre to prevent further damage. Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove. Too much room can cause blisters. Too little

room cuts off circulation.Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This mate-rial is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So you can take them off or put them on when needed.Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt. Wearing elbow and knee pads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles. Along with their helmet.Accessories: If you want added peace of mind, that’s available, too. I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care. A full chest protector is also available. These are the basics to getting started. Bottom line, you won’t regret being fully suited on the road.

“I’d knocked off 200,000 km. Hopefully, she’s too naïve to notice”

I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii. They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world. While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought.Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right? One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected. With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks. My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition! Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.”Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition. Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle. I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school. As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition. Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold!Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more.Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that. All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

*Odometer: The law allows an odometer to be replaced when broken, but the repair must be recorded and the true mileage needs to be disclosed. CarProof and ICBC vehicle history reports can reveal more about how far a vehicle has really traveled. Even AirCare, where available, can help. And Walt is wrong; altering an odometer is a crime.

Confessions of a Curber

Camping is fun and most of us have done it at one time or another. Of course, it can be miserable without

a decent tent that is easy to set up and keeps you dry and comfortable. One of the hottest products

on the market today is a “truck tent.” Napier Enter-prises developed it and it makes sense for those peo-

ple that like to go camping, but do not like to sleep on the ground. The truck tent is exactly as it sounds: a

tent for your truck. This tent sits in the open bed of your truck with the tent poles (which are like regular tent poles that collapse with a quick pull) designed to fit in the stake pockets of your box rail. The tent also comes with a fly for the rain and an aw-ning off the back to cover climbing in and out. And they have tents available for just about any truck. The cost is around $289, depending on the truck. Invest in an air mattress or you will be sporting a set of marks on your back resembling the ribs in the truck’s bed. Don’t ask me how I know. SUV owners should espe-cially like the tents that are designed with them in mind. These tents feature a docking collar that fits around the back of your sport-ute so your vehicle is inside your tent. When you need your vehicle, you just remove the collar and zip it up, $379. For hunters there

is a camouflage version fea-turing the Mossy Oak break up design. Just be careful sticking your head out the back in the early morning. The newest tent to their product line is the Back-roadz truck tent. This value priced tent line fits most pickups and sleeps two comfortably. Easy setup utilizing shock-corded fiber-glass poles and five-foot-five-inches of head room. It comes with a rain fly

and storm flap in the door section to provide privacy and protection. This model is $199. The SUV/minivan tent has a universal sleeve that fits snug around any vehicle with a nine-by-nine foot footprint that can sleep four to six people and over seven feet of headroom. There are three large mesh windows providing plenty of ventilation and the bath-tub style floor keeps things dry. Carrying bag included for $269.The interesting thing about this line up is with every purchase a tree will be planted through the partnership with trees for the future.Order the strap protectors for $24.99. They will save the finish on the side of your truck and prevent scratches as the wind moves the tent. There are many combina-tions available so look them up at napierenterprises.com.

Just two races in, Bill Okell is off to a good start in his bid

to qualify for the Sports Car Club of America’s national championships.

Driving a modified MG Midget in the F production class, Okell posted fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the events held at Thunderhill Raceway Park road course near Sacramento, Calif.

The results left him sitting fifth in the point standings for the SCCA’s Western Conference, heading into this weekend’s races in Los Angeles.

“Every time we went out we just got faster and better,” said Okell, who was invited to drive a car owned by fellow racer Chuck Horton. Both are under the umbrella of the San Francisco-based Huffaker Engineering team.

“I think they were content that I could be competitive and brought the car back in one piece and didn’t wreck it,” Okell said.

The conference schedule lists six race weekends with two races each. Drivers need a minimum of four race starts to be eligible for nationals – known as the run-offs – and the top 10 in the standings qualify.

The run-offs happen Oct. 7 to 12 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

in Monterey, Calif.Okell hopes to get his third

and fourth races in this weekend, but will be in tough competitively, as the L.A. races tend to attract the largest number of drivers in his category. Regardless of his results, he plans to run at Seattle International Raceway next month and possibly

Portland in July. With the run-offs being held on

the West Coast for the first time in 45 years, many drivers from California, Oregon and Washington, and a few from B.C., have put together

ambitious race schedules for 2014, Okell said.

Community leaders share their favourite teacher storiesDon DescoteauNews staff

With the benefit of time and life experience, most adults can remember at least one grade

school teacher who stood out among the rest and impacted their life for the better.

Mine were in the field of music (thank you, Keith Fraser) and

phys-ed (likewise, Ed Ashmore), men who laid the groundwork for lifelong interests in both areas.

In continuing our series cel-ebrating grade school teachers and the critical role they play in human development, we asked community leaders to share some of their favourite experiences with educators from their past.

We hope their stories resonate with you and prompt you to think about teachers from your past.

Tania Miller, music director, Victoria Symphony Orchestra – I grew up in a farming commu-nity of 1,000 people (Foam Lake, Sask.). In high school I had a social studies teacher named Ian Coo-per who had an incredible passion for people and history. He had a big impact on me for the way he taught us about being a member of society and passionately follow-

ing our dreams,. He also started a band at school and taught every-body how to play guitar. There was that side of him that embraced

the arts, which appealed to me, but he taught us to be passionate in a variety of different ways. I think the pro-found thing that he did was he made us want

to be the best we could be. As a result of his impact and others,’ I’d say probably 80 per cent of our class went to university.

Guy Dauncey, Victoria author, sustainable futurist –  “I was at a boarding school in England (from age 13 to 18), and the music master there, his name was Tony Brown, was by far the greatest inspiration

to me. Not only did he give us the greatest musical education, on Friday evenings he would invite us over for tea and talk philoso-

phy with us. He would ask things like, ‘Do we have free will?’ and however we would answer, he’d proceed to point out pre-cisely why the opposite was

true. The lesson was, you’ve got to think things out for yourselves. We didn’t have any other classes that went remotely near (talking about) philosophy or the big ques-tions of life, and the realization that the big questions of life don’t have black and white answers.”

Lillian Szpak, City of Langford councillor – I was an Air Force brat and we moved around every two to three years. My Grade 7 teacher at RCAF Centra-lia (Ontario) was Mr. Heimrich. He stands out for me because he encouraged me to write cre-atively and to write poetry. He treated me like an adult, as if I had something to say that could affect others. He really shaped me that way. He was very candid and would share his own experience and joke about

what was going on at home, so he was real to me. Teachers in my era were authoritative, but he was so different. Having the freedom to write what you want and how you want, and to share that without being judged, was really outside of the box.

Frank Leonard, mayor of Saan-ich – I attended nine schools in my 12 school years since my father’s

employer trans-ferred us around B.C. I often didn’t get involved in school activi-ties since I hardly knew any-one.  However, my senior high school years

at Mount View High  on Carey Road in Saanich were terrific and I attribute that to principal Don Smyth and vice-principal Ken Brown.  They ‘recruited’ me into activities like student council, ref-ereeing the student/teacher soc-cer game, reading the morning announcements and running the Miss Mount View pageant. I loved being active, yet it was the sup-port of Don and Ken that made it happen. I credit them with the experiences that gave me the con-fidence to later become involved in our community.

Adam Olsen, interim B.C. Green Party leader –  I was only ever in one of his classes, Grade 11 math at Stelly’s, but the example

set by Peter Mason has always res-onated with me. I remember him saying, ‘One year I’m going to take a class of students to Mount Ever-est’ and I remem-ber it reverber-ated through the school. People had to think about ‘what is Everest?’ It’s the highest peak of human achieve-ment. They went, and I remember he came back and said, ‘I’m going to build a climbing wall,’ and he was one of the people responsible for the development of Boulders Climb-ing Gym, which continues to have a huge impact on our community and on our kids in Central Saanich. He’s always had a very, very signif-icant impact on me. It’s about set-ting a goal, no matter how impos-sible it may seem to be, then going out and getting it. It’s a great anal-ogy for life.

Splashes of radiant orchid, faux fur and wallpaper are all on the agenda, though per-haps not all at once, for the Home Expo at West Shore rec.

Danisha Drury and Amy McGeachy, known individually for their design talents and together for appear-ances on CHEK TV’s Design District, will make homeowners feel safe delving into these trends of 2014.

The duo hosts Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Design Trends for 2014 talks during this year’s April 25 to 27 Home Expo.

“We’ll talk a lot about design in gen-eral and accessories,” says McGeachy of the second presentation. “That’s where people really spend the major-ity of their money in renovations. It has to be functional and have good form, but then you do want it to look nice and have style.”

Wallpaper is a top trend they’ll hit on dur-ing presentations at the show.

“Some of the paper they’re making now, it’s so beautiful, easy to apply and easy to remove and they’re gorgeous. I don’t see it ever going back out of style again. It’s come way too far. It’s not your grandmother’s wallpaper,” Drury says.

murals that make you think you’re in Marrakech, or on Madison Avenue in New York.

The hottest colour this year is radiant orchid (a fuchsia).

“We’ll be giving people tips and ideas for incorporating that colour without going out and buying a radi-ant orchid couch. My take is choose trends that work for you, not just choosing it because it’s a trend.”

These design profes-sionals will outline ways to select accessories that can be easily rem-edied if need be.

“Try it out and see-ing how it works for you,” McGeachy says. “A lot of people have to think resale as well. Things that are your decor, that’s fine if it appeals to the masses.”

Poor layout and design waste money so they’ll help audiences look at where to go high-end and where to

save a nickel. “If the design is done well, it can

sell your home for you. If the update is poor, people might walk in and see the dollar signs,” McGeachy says. “You really need to plan well ahead, know well ahead.”

Many would think faux fur should be limited to toss cushions, but a

chair, or perhaps even a larger piece (which could show up at the Expo) make a state-ment, and it’s a good one in 2014. After all, as Drury says, “faux fur is huge.”

The 29th annual Vic-toria Spring Home Expo runs April 25 to 27 at West Shore Parks and Recreation, 1767 Island Hwy. Friday runs 1 to 9 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission is $5.

On a bright April afternoon, Shel Suzuki and Brooklyn the bulldog soak in the sun on the deck of their Fisherman’s Wharf float home.

A harbour taxi packed with pas-sengers cruises by and just up the dock, tourists hold up iPads and cameras to take a piece of this scene home.

Inside Suzuki’s kitchen, a two-man work crew is in the final stages of installing the kitchen cabinets back around the hot water heater – that unexpectedly gave out earlier in the day – because today they learned that the cabinets were actually built around the tank. Just another exam-ple of how float home life, particu-larly life in Suzuki’s ultra compact, 347 square-foot floating “hobbit house” is just like life on land, with a twist.

“It’s like any other home,” Suzuki says. “It’s just maintenance. But you can’t find people who’ve worked on float homes before, so this is their first time working on a really small space.”

Suzuki was drawn to the close community following a 2010 visit to Victoria, when along with friends, they spotted the float home, which happened to be for sale, and posed for a photo in front of it. Suzuki was living in Winnipeg at the time and was taken by the copper-roofed float home, dubbed Ziggaratus by previ-ous owners.

“Within two months I bought the place and moved out here – with-out seeing the inside at all. It was just a gut feeling. I saw the front and thought: ‘I think I could live here.’”

Suzuki’s story is a common one

among the 33-home community. One Edmonton import made a deal to purchase his home from the park-ing lot when he learned it was up for sale during a visit to Victoria. Before Suzuki would experience the warm-weather joys that generally attract new residents to the lifestyle: kayak-ing off the deck and riding the water taxi downtown with Brooklyn – they had to experience a winter on the water without adequate weather-proofing.

“Because I came in January and didn’t know what the weather was like, I didn’t have a fireplace. I had single pane windows that weren’t great. I had doors that didn’t fit. It was a very cold winter – so cold I had to sleep with a pillow case on my head.”

The following month came a tsu-nami warning from the earthquake in Japan. The float homes were evacuated within five minutes in the middle of the night. Last Febru-

ary, a homeowner to the community couldn’t sleep through the sound of their wind chimes, and when he got out of bed to silence the noise, he spotted his neighbour’s home floating towards the Inner Harbour, secured by just one rope.

Eventually, the residents woke up, heeded the advice to stay inside, and with the help of several neigh-bours, secured the home once more.

Suzuki simply laughs at the few close calls they’ve been through and reiterates the need to check and tighten lines regularly. Maintenance costs, such as regular upkeep of the float on which the home is built, are in line with those of living on land. The cost of moorage, paid by square-footage, of the base is comparable to strata fees for condo owners.

Guy Crozier, president elect of the Victoria Real Estate Board sold float homes at Westbay Marine Village in Esquimalt when the community launched in the early 2000s.

The homes have always had a romantic appeal, the Sleepless in Seattle effect, Crozier says.

“A lot of float homes, you can park your car in a covered parking lot, walk down the dock to your float home and jump on your pad-dle board or in your canoe and go out right from your back door. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to have.”

Since Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t gated like Westbay, residents are in constant contact with tourists drawn to the lifestyle.

“Sometimes in the summer, we’ll leave chalk out here and people will write where they’re from. You’ll come home and see a hundred dif-ferent places in the world,” Suzuki says. “Advice I give people, that if you want to live down here and it’s your gut to live down here, then you should do it.”

DID YOU KNOW? | The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority owns Fisherman’s Wharf and supplies utilities.

Float into an easy coastal lifestyle Work with someone experienced – “Buyers

need to do their due diligence,” Crozier says. Ensure your realtor has

experience with the intricacies of oat homes, and are willing to exploit

that, he says.

Understand the lease – Float homes

can be more expensive than a house – without the security of land – so understanding the terms of the lease, and avoiding high costs of relocation is

a top consideration.

Inspect the oat – Just as prospective buyers on land shouldn’t overlook a home’s foundation, a prudent shopper should

investigate what lies below the waterline by contacting a oatation

expert to assess the home, in addition to a standard

building inspector.
