Big Wave Surfing with Surfer Dan Moore

“I do remember it feeling like a monster chasing me down–the power and th e energy–you know, there’s just nothing else like it. You can’t find a deeper, richer blue than you can from the beautiful Pacific Oceanright here. I love to ride big waves. The North Shore is unique in the sense that from Kahuku all the way outto Ka‘ena Point you have about 20 miles of literally hundreds and hundreds of surf spots, all in close proximity. The real country feel has been remarkably preserved over the years.”

O‘ahu is the perfect destination for ocean lovers. The warm Pacific that surrounds the Island createsendless possibilities for water adventures.

Water Activities

SURFING  Among surfers, O‘ahu is not only an internationaldestination, but is acknowledged as the birthplaceof modern surfing. It was Duke Kahanamoku, withhis “mile-long” ride in Waikıkı who put modernsurfing on the map. During winter, when waves canmeasure up to 50-feet high, there is no hotter spoton O‘ahu than the legendary North Shore, wherethe giant surf made the names Waimea, Sunset,Pipeline and Hale‘iwa famous. In the summermonths, the North Shore flattens out, while thebig surf hits the South.

Ready to stop watching and dive in? Whatever

your age, skill or interest, there is someone whocan teach you to surf. Whether you pick the BeachBoys on Waikıkı Beach, the Hawaiian Fire SurfSchool, Hans Hedemann Surf School or Girls Who Surf, learning to surf will be one of yourprized memories of O‘ahu.

UNDERWATER

Underwater O‘ahu is every bit as lushand dramatic as the Island’s topsidescenery. Snorkeling is great and there arehundreds of sites around the Island where you’ll find fascinating underwater life. A hybrid of snorkeling and scuba, snubalets you breathe under water without wearing a tank. If you’re not certified, dive shops around O‘ahu offer classes,

equipment and information on dive sitesand conditions.

OVER WATER

Don’t want to surf or snorkel? Bodysurfing, body boarding and stand uppaddle boarding are popular alternatives.Perhaps this is the time to try windsailing, parasailing or hang gliding! Or try windsurfing out by Le‘ahi (DiamondHead) or on beautiful Kailua beach.

There’s wakeboarding (it’s somethinglike waterskiing, but wilder), kitesurfing (a combination of kite-flying, wakeboarding, surfing and flying) andstand-up paddle boarding. Stand-uppaddle boarding is a more tranquil sport, unless you’re good enough to surf!Lather on the sunscreen, pack a picnicand a towel, and paddle a kayak to one ofO‘ahu’s nearby protected islets, or moku.Stroll the isolated beach, cool off in the water, and then paddle back in time for arefreshing shave ice…or mai tai!

Known as the Banzai Pipeline because of the massive tubes that form from the

curling waves. The most famous surf spot on the North Shore.

Kawela Bay is the most protected bay on O‘ahu’s North Shore. Reefs outside the

bay diffuse high surf during the winter months leaving the near shore waters calm.

Considered one of the longest stretches of rideable surf in the world. The wide

sandy beach provides families a great place to play in the sand!

The bay offers excellent snorkeling with little current movement. Occasionally,

you can see turtles popping their heads out of the water.

Famous for 30-ft. waves in the winter, but calm during the summer months

allowing for excellent water fun.

This is a beautiful 76-acre park located along the south shore, just west of the

famous Waikıkı Beach area.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the most popular snorkeling sites in

Hawai‘i. A narrow beach about 2,000-feet long lines the bay. Closed Tuesday.

Sandy Beach lies at the base of Koko Crater. Its famous waves are considered one

of the best bodyboarding sites in Hawai‘i.

One of the most famous beaches in the world. The two-mile stretch of white-sand

coast is fronted by hotels and visitor facilities.

This beautiful beach lies between Alala and Kapoho Points. It includes a public

boat ramp in the lee of Alala Point and is the center of windsurfing on O‘ahu.

Never crowded, this is the perfect site to just enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

The water is calm and warm and the location beautiful.

Considered to be one of the best swimming beaches in Hawai‘i. The water is clear

and the beach is clean, wide and surf-free.

Makapu‘u Point, the easternmost point on O‘ahu, is the site of the Makapu‘u

Lighthouse and a popular bodyboarding beach for the locals.

Waimanalo Beach Park is a 38-acre park. The beach fronting the park is wide and

sandy, providing good conditions for sunbathing and swimming.

The Ko ‘Olina Lagoons are open to the public and include public parking.

The marina facilities include slips, a fuel dock, trailer parking and a public ramp.

Famous worldwide for its surfing waves, in winter waves are up to 25 ft. When

the ocean is calm this is one of O‘ahu most popular dive sites.

This is the last sandy stretch of shore on the northwest coast of O‘ahu. Also

known as Keawa‘ula Beach or Puau Beach.

“Th e quick definition of Hawai‘i RegionalCuisine is it’s a contemporary style of

cooking in Hawai‘i today that borrows from all th e ethnic influ ences

you find in Hawai‘i.I think the local people in Hawai‘i love to eat. You know, people plan their days around whatthey’re going to eat for breakfast, lunch anddinner. My advice to visitors: get out into thecommunity and don’t be afraid of trying differentthings. That’s where the real culture is.”

Early voyagers crossed thousandsof miles of ocean, bringing withthem food provisions, plants and

domestic animals, as well as knowledgeof ocean navigation based on the stars. They traveled with the intent to settle, which they did, but also made manyreturn voyages to their homelands.

Here the Polynesians developed a newculture while maintaining the social andpolitical structure of their homeland. TheIslands were divided into small kingdoms, each ruled by its own high chief whoreceived guidance from a council of ali‘i (chiefs) and a kahuna (high priest). Thedistinction between those with powerand the maka‘ainana (commoners) was maintained through the stringentenforcement of kapu (taboos, rules). The

kapu system permeated everyday life, ruling, for example, that men and womencould not eat together or partake of thesame foods.

CAPTAIN COOK Until the late 1700s, the Hawaiians hadknown of people only from neighboringPacific kingdoms. But with the arrival ofCaptain James Cook in 1778, the livesof the Hawaiian people were alteredforever. Captain Cook happened uponthe Hawaiian Islands during an expeditionin search of the Northwest Passage andnamed them the Sandwich Islands.

Few things are as universally symbolic of the Hawaiian Islands as thelong-held traditions of hula. Samoans, Maoris, Tongans, Tahitians andother Pacific cultures dance, but only Hawaiians hula. In the last 40 years, hula has come to embody the aloha spirit and its rich tradition hasbeen treasured and enjoyed by kama‘aina and malihini  alike.

Spiritually uplifting, hula conveys the essence of aloha—great love, caring, sharing, charity, kindness, compassion, mercy,

humility. While hula kahiko (traditionalhula) is accompanied by chants and

percussion sounds mimicking windand surf, hula ‘auwana (modern

hula) often includes singingand musical instruments.Costume is also important, and both male andfemale dancers adornthemselves with lei ,

anklets, shells, feathersand flowers.

Wherever you seehula, if you like what you see, feel free

to shout “ Hana

hou!”— a greatcomplimentto the dancersthat means“Do it again!”

The USDA enforces strict rulesregarding the importation of uninspectedplants and animals that can severely

change our fragile environment. Beforelanding in Hawai‘i, you’ll be asked todeclare any such items. Department of Agriculture agents will inspect and likelyconfiscate them before allowing you tocontinue on your way. For more infor-mation, visit the Dept. of Agriculture website at www.hawaii.gov/hdoa.

CLIMATE

Weather can vary from one part of theIsland to another. It is generally drieron the leeward side, wetter windward.Generally speaking, there are twoseasons. Winter (November through April), when temperatures typicallyrange in the low-70s to mid-80s, andsummer when the high can run into thelow-90s. Trade winds keep youcomfortable year-round.

DRESS CODE

Att ire is “resort wear” even at themost luxurious resorts and restaurants. There’s no need to bring a coat or tieunless you want to dress up. Dressfor comfort. T-shirts, tank tops, poloshirts, shorts, jeans, sundresses, sneakers and sandals are all goodchoices. Temperatures are cooler in

the evening, making a sweater and

slacks a good idea. It is a custom inHawai‘i to slip off your shoes whenentering a home.

 Protecting O‘ahu

SUN SENSE You’ll want to show off a nice tan when you go home, but please use commonsense when sunbathing in thetropics. A sunburn will develop fasterthan you thought possible, so be sure touse sunscreen. Remember, it’s usuallyhottest between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

and the sun is stronger here than you’reprobably used to.

SAFETY  The ocean is O‘ahu’s playground, butthere are precautions to observe.Offshore winds and currents can bepowerful and change suddenly. Thatmeans don’t stray far from shore or headout to kayak, windsurf or sail if warningsigns are posted or if conditions warrantcaution. If you’re unsure about condi-tions, ask a lifeguard. For informationabout beach safety conditions, visit www.hawaiibeachsafety.com.

If you’re hiking into a wilderness, besure to sign out with park rangers andobserve all warning signs. Few places areas safe as O‘ahu, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon all care as you travelabout. Lock your car doors and don’tleave any personal belongings in yourunattended vehicle.

ENVIRONMENT The natural beauty of Hawai‘i’s fragileenvironment comes from its geographi-cal isolation from other ecosystems. TheDepartment of Agriculture enforcesstrict rules regarding the exportation ofuninspected plants and animals. Whendeparting, luggage must pass a pre-flightcheck at the airport to ensure that noplant insects or diseases are hitching aride back with you. You’re welcome totake inspected fresh flowers and fruitshome. Many items purchased at theairport or mailed home from local vendors are already inspected. For moreinformation, call the Department of Agriculture at 808-832-0566.
