    TarzanTeachers Pack

  • The following teachers pack offers teachers a wide variety of activities associated with the show, Tarzan. Activities range from games and exercises based on the language in the show to a synopsis of the plot and a comprehensivevocabulary list. Sheets with the smiling child header should be photocopied and distributed to students, whereas the ones marked teachers can be used as reference for yourselves.

We strongly recommend preparing students before coming to see a show. A Face to Face show in itself may be rewarding but understanding and appreciation are greatly increased as a result of previous preparation and post show activities. The fact that the students have a basic grasp of the plot and the vocabulary facilitates not only their understanding but also the work of the actors thus ensuring an activity beneficial to all those involved.

Face to Face would also like to stress the fact that their shows are live theatrical events and therefore certain basic conditions should be respected. Please remind students not to leave the auditorium during the show; not to eat or drink; to respect the other students and participants and that the idea of the show is NOT to test their English but to have FUN! All the above conditions are easily met with the presence and co-operation of you, the teacher.

Please come and visit our web site at www.face2facetheatre.com where we will be posting extracts of video and photos from the shows we will be doing over the course of the year as well as students comments and many more surprises

One last thing... We would appreciate any feedback from students and teachers on the shows and the teachers packs. Only in this way can we continue to improve and offer better productions year after year. We would be very pleased to receive any drawings or lettters from students concerning the shows and we are planning to post the best ones on our web site.

    Plot Synopsis

    t e a c h e r s

    t e a c h e r s

There are two different versions of the synopsis: one correct and the other incorrect. Depending onthe level of the students the synopses can be used before the show as preparation or after the showas comprehension.

The synopsis can be used in the following ways:

    BEFORE THE SHOW

    AFTER THE SHOW

    a) The teacher gives the incorrect text to the students and they have to find the mistakes. b) The students listen to the correct version and fill in the gaps (see page 13)

    c) The students listen to the incorrect version and find the differences.

    a) The teacher goes through the correct version checking on any questions the students may haveb)The students receive a copy of the incorrect version. The teacher then reads out the correct version and students correct the mistakesc) Questions may be used to test the students grasp of plot.d) Using the gap fill excercise

  • Blackboard Game

Stick pictures of various objects relevant to the show on the blackboard. Split the class into two teamsand give a number to each member of the team. For example, if the teams have five members each then number each team from one to five. The teams sit at a distance from the blackboardand the teacher shouts out a number, then an object. The first member of the team that touchesthe object on the board wins a point. The gane continues until one of the teams reaches the set number of ponts: for example, the f irst team to reach ten points wins.

    Definition game

Write down all the words that appear in the show on a piece of paper. Put them into a bag. One member of the class picks a word and the other students have to ask questions about the word in order to find out what the word is. The student can only answer YES or NO. Every time the student says no a mark is put up on the board. The game continues until the class guess the word or until there are twenty marks on the board.

    Language games and exercisest e a c h e r s

    Categories Game

    a) Have students place the vocabulary from the show into the following categories: animals; furniture; adjectives; transport; clothes; places.

    b) Using the same categories play The Categories Game

Letter Clothes Places Verbs Animals Adjectives Furniture

T Trousers Toledo to tell tiger tall table

B Boxers bathroom to be big bed

    I. Put the above table without the examples on the blackboard and have the students copy it.II. Have one student recite the alphabet in his head and another to say stop. At the word stop the student reciting says the letter he has reached out loud.III. The students have to find a word for each category beginning with that letter. The first person to finish shouts Categories! and everyone stops. If no one finishes after three or four minutes the teacher can stop the game.IV. The first student to finish reads out his list of words which the teacher then copies onto the grid on the board. If students have different words these too are written on the board. Points are distributed in the following way: 10 points for a word no one else has; 5 points if more than one student has the same word; 0 points for no word or an incorrect word. Students should be encouraged to find original words.

    Aniimal Tag

To practice the names of animals the following exercise can be used:

In a large empty space play the traditional tag game but taking the shape of animals. The teacher chooses a student and tells him/her what animal s/he is going to be. This student has to chase the other students imitating the animal s/he has been given. When s/he has tagged another student this student shouts out the name of an animal and imitates it

    Drama Games: Animals

    Animal Freeze

Try to use a large classroom or the gymnasium for this activity. The children move freely around the room. Call out the name of an animal (using the farm animals fea-tures in the show: elephant, monkey, snake, frog etc). The children must imitate that animal until you call out freeze! (or stop, which younger students will be more fami-liar with). The last student to stop moving, or any student to move during the freeze period, is eliminated and must sit down at the side of the hall. The game finishes when only one student the winner remains.

    Animal charades

Children sit in a circle on the floor. One student stands in the middle and imitates an animal. The rest of the children must try to guess which animal it is, and call it out. The first person to call the name of the animal correctly goes to the centre of the circle to do the next charade/

    Musical Animals

Put on some music and ask the children to dance! When the music stops, you will shout out an animal, and they must stop dancing and mime that animal. For younger children, you can help by miming the animal as you say it, so they need only listen and copy your movement. For older children, give no help those that get the animal wrong or are the last to mime it are eliminated from the game and must sit out. The winner is the last person to remain dancing!
