From Father Mike
This Memorial Day weekend is also the first weekend after the end of the
Easter Season, which is the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. It is also the
unofficial beginning of the summer, especially for those getting out of
school or enjoying their place on the lake. Today’s second reading
reminds us that we are “joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so
that we may also be glorified with him.” I think most of us would like to skip
the suffering part and jump straight to the glory. But any sufferings we
have in life can be joined with the sufferings of Christ, meaning that they
are also joined to divine love and God’s victory over suffering, which has
the last word. I believe part of what Paul is telling the Romans is that if you
want glory, strive for love in your life, and if you want love, be prepared
for suffering and sacrifice, and if you want that to be more than pain and
hardship, ask Jesus to draw it into his own death on the cross, which
transforms it into his new life of the resurrection. Memorial Day reminds us
that some have sacrificed their very life for the higher purpose of the
defense and freedom of others, and our faith shows that this does not
have to happen in vain if placed into the context of the Pascual Mystery
of Christ’s dying and rising. If the Trinity is God’s revelation that the divine
nature is intrinsically one of being in a loving relationship, then our
Christian faith reassures us that this love also means we share in God’s
glory.
