‘OHANA GIVING REPORT 2013-2014
Aloha Maui Prep ‘Ohana,
Winston Churchill said: “We make a living by what we get. We
make a life by what we give.” I can’t help but recognize the incredible
generosity of our community over the past year as a prime example of this
spirit. As individuals, we not only “make” our own lives by what we give,
our giving sustains the life of Maui Prep for our students and your children.
The incredible success of our fundraising efforts over the 2013/2014
school year were very much due to the outstanding leadership of our
own Cathi Minami, Stacy Casco, Michele Pupunu, and Board Trustee and
Development Committee Chair, Lisa Gibson. I want to thank the stellar
leadership of our Maui Prep Fund volunteer Chairperson, Sarah Burns, and
her amazing team of committed volunteer parent captains. In its ninth year, the Maui Prep Fund
continued to set new records in donor participation: 96% of our Parents, 100% of our Faculty and Staff,
and 100% of our Board of Trustees made gifts. Under the leadership of volunteer co-chairs Corie Bluh and
Kim Zeigler, and their entire group of dedicated parent volunteers, the Jingle Bell Rock ’n’ Roll Ball
(December 2013) was our most fun school gala to date! Special thanks also goes to our outstanding
auctioneer, Maui Prep parent, Warren Gibson. For the hugely successful “The Tom,” The Tom Rosenquist
Legacy Golf Tournament, thanks goes to the leadership of co-chairs Chuck Bergson and Charles Head, as
well as Tournament Director Kim Zeigler. All told, Maui Prep’s 2013/2014 fundraising efforts raised
$536,275. This was an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to all!
Maui Prep and Maui Prep students celebrated several other achievements in 2013/2014. In athletics,
Maui Prep earned first place in the MIL Division 2 HMSA Kaimana award competition for our overall
accomplishments in athletics, academics, sportsmanship, and community service. Sky Hirsch, Maui Prep
Class of 2014, was MIL Champion in the 50-Freestyle and 100-Fly, and placed first at States in the
50-Freestyle. Danielle Jefferies, Maui Prep Class of 2015, was MIL Champion in the 100-Fly and 200-I.M,
and placed third at States in the 100-Fly and 200-I.M. The Maui Prep Boys 200 Relay finished fifth in States;
this was the first Maui Prep relay team to place at States. The Maui Prep JV Girls Cross Country Team
placed first at the MIL Championships. Sophia Johnston, Maui Prep Class of 2017, placed first in the MIL
JV Division and was named MIL Cross Country All Star.
In community service, Gina Marzo, Maui Prep Class of 2015 and this year’s student government
president, organized an island-wide cigarette butt cleanup campaign that involved hundreds of Maui island
students. Her project was used by local legislators to pass a law to ban cigarette smoking on Maui County
beaches. Maui Prep students also inaugurated a Rotary Interact Club, and participated in the Relay for
Life among many other charitable efforts.
In academics and the arts, the Maui Prep Middle School Science Olympiad Team placed first overall
in the Regionals and third at States. Our Maui Prep students also produced and performed in “Broadway
Bound” and “Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr.” One other notable achievement for our community this past year is
that Maui Prep earned a 6-year accreditation term with the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools
(HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). This is wonderful recognition for the
growth and progress of Maui Prep.
On behalf of Maui Prep’s students and teachers, thank you again for all you have done, and thank
you in advance for all you will continue to do.
Sincerely,
Jonathan L. Silver, PhD Head of School
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
2013-2014 ‘OHANA GIVING REPORT
The evening of Friday, May 30, 2014 was a night to remember as twelve students graced
the outdoor stage at Maui Prep and bid a fond farewell to their school. As Kahu David
Kapaku gave the blessing, attendees watched as a Maui sunset provided a perfect backdrop
for this event.
Entertainment was provided by the “7AM” band, and Dr. Jonathan Silver gave the Head
of School’s welcome address. The class invited faculty speakers, Branden Hazlet and Chris
Border, to share their thoughts and Wayne Watkins, early childhood educator and musician,
gave the Commencement Address. Senior Class President Skyler Hirsch presented the class
gift, a freshly painted trellis covering the preschool sandbox. Valedictorian Santana Huck and
Salutatorian Timothy Lee gave outstanding speeches that shared unique insights and a bit of
humor. After Academic Honors, College Acceptances, and Scholarships were presented,
Katharine Ornelas was awarded the coveted Faculty Merit Award.
The members of the Class of 2014 were offered approximately $1,310,196 in college
scholarships and awards. In addition, graduates received scholarships from Lahaina Youth
Rotary Foundation, Rotary Club of Lahaina, Taketani Foundation, Maui Prep PTSO, and
Realtors Association of Maui.

Maui Prep Means…‘Ohana
The Maui Prep Annual Fund is our
yearly campaign to raise donations that
help to bridge the gap between tuition
and the true cost to educate each Maui
Prep student. Our parents, grandparents,
alumni, alumni parents, and faculty and
staff were all vital to the success of the
2013-2014 campaign. We were able to
raise a total of $182,000 with 96% of our
parents, 100% of our faculty & staff and
100% of our Board of Trustees giving.
Thank you to the dedicated
volunteers who made this annual fund
a success. We would like to thank the
Maui Prep Fund Chair, Sarah Burns,
Board of Trustees Chair, Ray Chin,
Faculty Chair, Heather Baylosis and

Each year in April, Maui Prep honors a man who inspired
us all. Tom Rosenquist had a dream of a school for the children
of West Maui, and he made it a reality. In just four years, Tom
Rosenquist gave more than $1 million in gifts to Maui Prep and
inspired others to give. Each year we honor Tom Rosenquist’s
legacy at the annual Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament.
Thank you to Tournament Chairs Charles Head, Chuck
