PRESIDENT’S REPORTGreetings and a happy new year to all.

This year has started off well for the club, we have a lot of exciting guest speakers and events lined up!

Our branch put together a stand at the shot show earlier this month, which again was great, thank you Ian H and all those who helped with the set up and pack down of the stand, thanks to Matt T and Vince P for putting in the hours to complete our new bar leaners which were used on the stand. All members efforts towards this was greatly appreciated including a large majority of the committee who manned the stand and made the whole thing come together perfectly, well done! Throughout the weekend we

THE BUSH TELEGRAPH MARCH 2019NZDA AUCKLAND BRANCH: PROTECTING & PROMOTING HUNTING 7

Since first hearing about the proposed changes to licensing system and the switch to practical assessment following theory for a-category applicants, I’d heard that the New Zealand Police and Mountain Safety Council where looking for venues to conduct the training in.

On behalf of the committee I was very pleased to be able to approach MSC and NZP to see if the club might assist in some way. Given the we operate within the major city in New Zealand and our Associations objective is to “Prompting and Protecting Hunting and the sport of Shooting”, requested we donate the use of our club rooms to NZP and MSC for use of the practical testing.

What better atmosphere and venue you could ask for when sitting your practical firearms assessment and to share the pride we members have for our club and hobbies.

Our branch committed to a 1-year trial period, and since August have had a number of applicants through the club rooms with a single MSC instructor conducting the assessments, they have been curious and respectful to our clubs heritage and traditions with many of the applicants in awe of our facilities, having been unaware we are in Target St and the role NZDA plays in a national context and as a result we have a few new members in the club which we might not otherwise.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, RESPONSIBILITY IN THE PUBLIC EYE.

Adam, the MSC Partnership Advisor had this to say;

“I would like to extend a big thanks to the Auckland branch of the NZDA for their support. The Mountain Safety Council’s delivery of the Practical Safety Training is an essential part of the Police’s Firearms Licensing. We have found the new training to be extremely beneficial to new licensees around the country. At your venue, over seven sessions so far, we have trained 71 new licensees.

I’m sure that all of these new licensees would have gotten a great impression of your organization from your clubrooms alone. This is, as you know, a pilot programme and we are working with Police and the community to improve it. But, so far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

We are fortunate to be able to provide such a venue, it’s invaluable asset and a great public service. Congrats to our membership for playing a part in the safe handling of firearms, particularly for the newest firearms users in the community.

was just about break out onto the creekbed when I caught a movement in the creek. Here was a beautifully spotted little jap picking its way upstream through the pools and boulders. Instead of lifting the rifle the camera was dragged out and zoom attached but only one photo was taken before it picked up my movement and took off. Back at camp after a bite of lunch and quick nap we assembled the trout rod and wandered off upriver. It being so long since I had seriously trout fished spotting them in the clear, bouldery water was difficult. After spooking a few we eventually found one feeding which Sam, a complete novice with the fly rod tried to entice but without luck.

The following mornings’ hunt was downstream and across the river, hoping to find some more open beech with less snowfall damage. Unfortunately, this area was no different and the bluff systems were worse. Throw in a couple of wasp stings and it wasn’t that enjoyable. Scattered sign and a month old carcase of a stag on a slip showed animals had been around but again quiet travel was impossible. Three or four hours in this rubbish, with leaves like corn flakes and each stick a firecracker, we threw in the

towel and headed for camp. After the obligatory siesta we each put on a lightweight pack and commenced the grind back up onto the tops. The plan was to sleep just below the bushline which would allow us to scope out the bush edges until dusk and again first thing in the morning. As the weather was so good, we didn’t bother to erect a tent and after a five minute walk broke out onto the bare tops. Sam soon spotted another hunter sitting glassing so we wandered over for a chat. He had come through from the Otutu, about an hour and three quarters walk away. After half an hour chewing the fat he headed off back to his camp. We stayed until dark, glassing big chunks of country with some inviting guts but obviously it was just too hot and dry to entice the animals from the cooler bush. Our night under the stars was interrupted two or three times by deer catching our wind and squealing their displeasure at our presence. At least that was positive and confirmed there were animals around. Next morning, we headed back along the tops towards the Manson but again a few hours glassing revealed nothing. The stunning views stretching to the bright green paddocks of Ngamatea Station in the west, northwest towards Golden Hills, north to the Harkness

MIKE MORSEKaweka Party Hunt Feb 9th-13th

With little interest in the hunt, and most of those who had initially shown some dropping out, it turned into a father and son hunt for me and Sam. With calm clear conditions, the flight in over the Black Birch range then across the Middle Hill, the Makino ridge and down to the Ngaruroro was quick and we were soon offloaded at the Omar biv which sits just above the river. Gear was stashed in the hut and there was time for an afternoon snooze before we decided to head for the tops leading to Spion Kop on the eastern edge of the Manson country above Rocks Ahead. In the extreme heat it was a relentless but not too difficult hour and half climb with scattered pink tape showing a vague route through the scrub and beech. The tops looked pretty barren and sunburnt but fantastic views were available in all directions. A few hours were spent glassing the bush edges but, other than Sam possibly seeing a white bum heading into the beech, no animals were out. The downhill was quicker but more taxing on the quads which were fair hurting by the time we reached the bivvy.

The next day, after a morning cuppa, we headed upstream crossing the river and climbing through the beech. What a nightmare. Thick coprosma undergrowth and never ending snow fall damage with trees and branches down everywhere. Not what I was hoping for and not the best for getting Sam into bush hunting. Whilst negotiating one of the bluffs I heard a metallic sound and realised the detachable mag in Sam’s rifle had done just that, detached. Ten minutes was spent hunting up and down the fern covered, near vertical face, before I gave up but luckily, just as I got to the base of the cliff, I spotted it minus all the rounds lying in the shingle. After fighting through this rubbish for a couple of hours we negotiated our way back through one final bluff system at which point I suggested Sam head for camp while I carried on into the Omarukokere Stream. Things got better further up the Omar but it was still shitty hunting. Flies on fresh droppings and even pools of pee on the dusty earth showed I was close but the deer would have heard me well before and scarpered. Conceding defeat, I dropped down to a terrace by the bouldery Omar creek and

camera is taking precedence over the rifle. Anyway, it saved me a nasty half hour’s grind back to camp through slippery, ankle breaking boulders. Sam had had a quick look not too far from camp, better bush but nothing seen.

With a couple of hours to spare gear was repacked, the mass of uneaten food testimony to the fact that when you don’t have to carry it you take way too much. Pretty much on the minute Chris Cross’ black chopper arrived and fifteen minutes later we were deposited back at the hangar.

Overall an enjoyable trip, as long as you don’t measure success by dead animals. Five days of blue, blue skies, searing Hawkes Bay heat and no wind, the coolness of the bush with the constant drone of the cicadas and background noise of the river rushing from pool to pool is enough compensation. For future party hunts I would not recommend the Omar as a summer location mainly due to the snow damage which may take another ten years to break down, and the dryness of the bush. There do not seem to be many areas where you can sit and scan slips and clear areas easily, unless you head for the tops. The deer are there but winter would be a better option as the bush would be quieter and the deer moving all day rather than parked up in the heat. The river could also be an issue during winter due to higher water levels this probably restricting hunting to just the true right which could be a bit limiting. The biv is an excellent shelter with an axe and some cooking gear but really only sleeps two people.

and Te Puke with Back Ridge and the eroded hills rising to Kaweka J to the east were compensation enough. Just magic.

After a couple of crackers and small tin of tuna for breakfast packing up didn’t take long and the downhill back to the biv was much quicker than the uphill slog. It was still enough to have me drenched in sweat so it was straight into a freezing river for a swim followed by a good brew and numerous cups of cold Raro to replenish fluids. Later that afternoon we bush bashed downstream then fished our way back to camp. This time the trout were more visible for some reason and a large, beautifully spotted brown sucked in the cicada imitation as it floated past without hesitation. With no minimum size limit, but a maximum of 550mm this was released. It’s lack of fight seemed to indicate it may have been caught a number of times before and just had an attitude of “just get it over with so I can get back to feeding please”. A bit further on Sam caught a perfect sized rainbow which put on a good aerial display but, unfortunately for him, he was consigned to the grill as dinner. Sandflies were just about intolerable, something to remember if hunting or fishing in these valleys.

On the final day the chopper was due early afternoon so there was enough time for me to head off up the Omar again looking for more huntable bush. Further up was a slight improvement but still fairly shitty although a couple of run ins with squealing deer showed the animals were there. Those squealing deer are so frustrating. They tease and lead you on, initially giving the impression you are closing in and have a chance only to then fade away as the deer move off. After a couple of hours, I was sick of the dry, dry bush and smashed branches so dropped into the main creek again and headed for camp. I had only been going ten minutes when a flash of orange near a log jam ahead caught my eye causing me to abruptly halt. Not more than fifty metres away were a couple of sika resplendent in their spotted summer coats. These soon materialised into four animals quietly grazing amongst the boulders. Interesting to watch undisturbed and occasionally one would lash out at another asserting its dominance over what little feed there was. Again, the rifle was discarded and the camera hauled out. I managed a handful of marginal photos before the puff of breeze on my neck signalled things were about to quickly change. Three bolted but one remained so down with the camera and up with rifle. As so often is the case combining the two just doesn’t work and just as I was pulling the trigger I knew it was a miss. Not having anything to carry back to camp didn’t really concern me though and just confirms I am beginning to get just a bit too soft. So often now the
