Prominent trainer Roger James’
admiration for champion European
racehorse Churchill (Galileo)
combined with South Island
breeders’ foresight to buy a mare from Australia
in foal to the Coolmore shuttle sire has paid a big
dividend, with the resulting youngster topping
the first Book 2 session at the New Zealand
Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale yesterday.
Robert Wellwood, James’ co-trainer,
identified the filly during on-complex
inspections and his senior partner gave the tick
of approval to go to the session-high $200,000
for the Berkley Stud-bred-and-consigned filly.
She was one of nine lots to make $100,000
or more on a day in which the quality
yearlings stood out and drew domestic and
international competition, leading to an
average of $43,240, up 25 per cent on the same
session last year.

James described his latest acquisition
as “a star filly”.
“I haven’t got an owner for her yet, but that is the next job, trying to
find one,” he said.
“She has got everything. She is by a great racehorse and she has got the
ability to be a Karaka Million horse.
“I only saw her this morning. Robert stayed up last night and he did the shortlist.
“I didn’t think I would have to pay that money for her, but I had the bit
between my teeth and fillies like that are quite rare.”
James, who was underbidder on $1.85 million worth of yearlings in
Book 1, is well aware of the racetrack credentials of Churchill, a European
champion two-year-old and dual Guineas-winning miler.
“I followed his whole career,” the trainer said.
“He was a very fast horse for a Galileo. People normally associate
Galileos with a bit of time, but he was a great two- and three-year-old and
he held a world ranking at some stage.
“They don’t get that without being pretty special.”
Catalogued as Lot 725, the filly is the first foal out of five-time winner
Astrid (Pins), herself a half-sister to talented Australian-raced, Listed-
winning filly Astronomia (King’s Best). The filly’s second dam, Astralita
(Kenny’s Best Pal), was also a Group 2 winner in Adelaide.
The session-topper’s price tag was a big result for Berkley Stud’s
Edwina Morris and Alan Jones, who bought Astrid in foal to the sire from
Willow Park Stud at the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Sale.
“We bought the mare, one of two we got in Melbourne. We have always liked
Pins mares and she has a lot of quality, a big eye and is very tidy,” Morris said.
“She was in foal to Churchill and we liked his chances too, being a fast
son of Galileo. I think we got her for A$50,000.
“There was huge interest in the filly. She is going to be bigger than
her mother and her
x-rays and scope were
excellent.
“We thought
she'd make $50,000 to
$60,000 and she has
gone to a great stable,
so we are delighted.”
Proisir colt makes $180,000Meanwhile, a colt by Rich Hill Stud’s Proisir (Choisir), the sire of four
stakes winners including the Group 1-placed and Saturday’s impressive
Westbury Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Levante, also came in for strong
competition yesterday, with Cambridge trainer Alex Oliveira winning out
at $180,000 for the Highline Thoroughbreds-offered yearling.
The highest-priced yearling ever sold by Highline Thoroughbreds’
Cam and Eva Heron, the colt is the third foal out of All Can Party (All
American), whose pedigree boasts Hong Kong Group 1-winning sprinter
Inspiration (Flying Spur), Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)-winning sire
Wandjina (Snitzel), Lucky Unicorn (Redoute’s Choice) and three-time
elite-level scorer Dracula (Quest For Fame). He was offered as Lot 713.
“It’s a big day for us,” Cam Heron said.
“It is not an easy game to be in and we are chipping away and trying to
build a reputation around our business.
“We are proud of the job that we do in preparing these yearlings, so it’s
justification for all the hard work that we put in.

“Eva and I started Highline and our first
horse went through the ring seven or eight years ago, but this is our sixth sale.
“We put one through and gradually built up until this year, where we
have 11. Four Book 1 fillies, and seven Book 2 colts and fillies.”
Oliveira linked with Tartan Meadow Bloodstock to buy the colt.
“He will probably go up to Hong Kong. We will play it by ear and see
how it goes,” Oliveira said.
“We work closely with the guys up there, they will be buying him with
me - Paul Chow (Tartan Meadow Bloodstock) and we might have another
client or two.”
Olveira has a rap on Proisir, who he believes can continue his rise
through the New Zealand stallion ranks.
“I am a big fan of Proisir. I have had a few,” he said.
“I first saw (Lot
713) him up here a
couple of days ago.
He is a precocious,
strong, correct colt,
and has a lovely walk
on him.
“He was one of
my top lots of the
day.”
Solid day for Little Avondale’s stallionsProgeny of New Zealand’s current leading stallion Per Incanto (Street Cry)
and his Little Avondale barnmate, freshman sire Time Test (Dubawi), were
also popular yesterday, with both sires responsible for two six-figure lots apiece.
Understandably, Little Avondale has a strong hand with yearlings by
Per Incanto and a filly out of the unraced Bellerama (Fusaichi Pegasus)
held top billing among that quartet of six-figure offerings when she sold
for $170,000 to Kiwi owner Gary Harding.
Her dam is a half-sister to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner Sarrera (Quest For Fame) and the stakes-placed Detroit Song
(Carnegie). She was catalogued as Lot 735.
Harding currently races last-start Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) winner
Bonham (Per Incanto), a three-year-old filly who has won four of her five
starts for trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard.
“I thought this one was the filly of the sale and I thought I got her for a
reasonable price,” Harding said.
“Initially, I thought I might get her for a little less but after seeing the
interest in her today I thought she might be up around the $200,000 mark.
“Sometimes having competition like we did on her is a good thing as it
helps vindicate your opinion of the horse.”
Harding had previously added three yearlings from Book 1, colts by
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Pierro (Lonhro) and Lonhro (Octagonal), to
his expanding racing interests.
IT'S A BIG DAY FOR US. IT IS NOT AN EASY GAME TO BE IN AND WE ARE CHIPPING AWAY AND TRYING TO BUILD A REPUTATION AROUND OUR BUSINESS- CAM HERON
“Johno and Hollie are doing a great
job for me, so I’m very pleased with them. It is a big decision to send
horses so far away from home, but I think it is the best thing I have ever
done,” Tirau-based Harding said.
“They are honest and straightforward, which is all I ever ask for.
“The whole team is going well at the moment and we have some young
ones coming through over the next month or so that I’m very excited about.”
Harding’s purchase was also the first yearling sold by Little Avondale
for George and Lucy Williams, who are shareholders in Per Incanto.
“She’s a cracking filly from a mare I bought off Sir Patrick Hogan a
few years back. She was empty at the time and I needed a couple of extra
mares for Per Incanto,” Little Avondale proprietor Sam Williams said.
“I paid nothing for the mare. She was a half-sister to a Group 1 winner
from the same family as Beau Zam, Balmerino and Surround. George
wasn't convinced until I said if you don't want her, I'll take her. It was a
good decision by him.”
Per Incanto sits atop the 2020-21 New Zealand stallion premiership
by winners with 37 individual victories, six ahead of nearest rival and
champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) and eight in front of Tavistock (Montjeu)
and Swiss Ace (Secret Savings).
He also leads the current Hong Kong sires’ table with 11 individual
winners from 21 runners.
Agent Robin Tai also bought a Per Incanto colt on behalf of a
Singapore-based client.
“The pedigree is what attracted me to him and he also appealed to my
father William, who is in Hong Kong,” Tai said.
“We start by looking at pedigree and he is from a nice family. The Per
Incantos go very well in Hong Kong. He is one the leading sires there and
gets lots of winners.
“I didn't see him until I got here to the grounds and he is a lovely colt. He
was on our shortlist quite quickly, especially after I sent a video to my father.”
Catalogued as Lot 664 and offered by Highline Thoroughbreds, the
colt is the third foal out of the New Zealand stakes-placed mare Special
Draw (Falkirk), who is a half-sister to the Group 2 runner-up Glorious
Beijing (Per Incanto).
The colt was bred by Nita Herbst after sourcing Special Draw from
Highden Park carrying
the colt.
“As a shareholder in
Embellish I was looking
for a mare to send to
him and Cameron Ring
of Cambridge Stud
found Special Draw for
me,” Herbst said.
“Cameron found
her at Sam and Libby
Bleakley's Highden
Park and said I need to
get a mare that could
run. It's that old adage,
‘if mum can run, that's a plus’, and she could run.
“She has a filly by Embellish at foot and is back in foal to him.”
Highline Thoroughbreds’ Cam Heron added: “We got him from Nita
in November and I could tell from day one that he was going to develop
into a nice individual.
“He took everything in his stride, handled the pressure well and
nothing was too much of a problem.”
The most expensive Time Test, a four-time Group winner in Europe
when trained by Roger Charlton, sold to a top of $130,000 yesterday after
realising up to $220,000 in Book 1.
The colt was knocked down to Pam Gerard of Ballymore Stables
New Zealand, who was left to do the bidding on behalf of her co-trainer,
Victoria-based Mike Moroney, and his agent-brother, Paul Moroney.
Offered by Wainui as Lot 710, the colt is the first foal out of the placed
mare Affrettando (Iffraaj), who is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Look At
Moiye (O’Reilly).
“Paul and Mike have been putting a lot of work into the sale, looking
at videos and photos and getting all the information they can and this colt
was one they chose,” Gerard said.
“The colt was pretty laid back in his box, but once near the ring he
really upped his game, so I called Paul and Mike and said he is getting
better all the time.
“They were pretty keen to take one home by Time Test. They like the
stallion's chances.”
Vendor Richard McKenzie has been associated with the colt’s family
for three generations.
“He has natural strength and if we had to take him home I wouldn't
have been too upset. I would have gladly raced him myself,” he said.
“We bought the granddam, Facing The Music, as an older mare and
Affrettando was her last foal. She missed in 2019, but is back in foal to Time
Test.”
Time Test’s sire, Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), is also the sire of Darley’s
exciting stallion Night Of Thunder, who has sired

20 individual winners, including three
stakes scorers, from just 58 live foals in his single southern hemisphere
crop of mares covered in 2016.
Williams believes yesterday’s trade held up well.
“We had Lot 580, a Per Incanto filly, she sold for $60,000 and another
Per Incanto filly (Lot 735) sold for $170,000 late in the piece,” he said.
“People still need horses in their stables and a lot of people had
missed out as Book 1 was really strong, with a clearance rate of 81 per cent.
“NZB have done a fantastic job with their new platform and trying to
get as many people involved as possible and gather information.”
As well as the increased average yesterday, the median climbed nine
per cent to $30,000 compared to the $27,500 recorded in 2020.
“The momentum from Book 1 has continued through to the first day of
Book 2 with a higher-priced top
lot than 2020 and an increase
in average,” NZB bloodstock
manager Danny Rolston said last
night.
“The local trainers were
strong - Paul Moroney, Roger
James, of course, with the top
lot - Go Racing, Phill Cataldo
for New Zealand clients
and overseas, and the online bidding was flat out again today with a
number of lots going to Hong Kong, Singapore and even Japan.”
The last session at Karaka starts at 1pm local time today. A Book 3 sale
will be conducted on Gavelhouse.com, starting tomorrow.

Enthaar holds Chairman’s acesLeading Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
contender Enthaar (Written Tycoon) will
face five rivals when she makes her second
outing in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
at Caulfield on Saturday. The Ciaron Maher
and David Eustace-trained filly, who made a
deep impression when skipping three lengths
clear in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) on
debut at Randwick in October, appears to have
frightened off plenty of the opposition. But
not so Daniel Bowman, who will unleash his
$80,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase
Fortunate Kiss (Divine Prophet) in the $160,000
Group 3. “We are under no illusions, we are
up against it," Bowman told Racing.com. "The
theory behind it was we could go to Werribee
on Friday in a field of ten or 12 and still run
into something that goes good, or we could
have a crack at Caulfield and hope for a small
field - and I was right it is - and if she runs a
place she's got black-type. Also, there's rain
forecast and that will take the edge off the good
ones.” Commenting on his juvenile, Bowman
added: “She's had a couple of trials. She had
a real quiet one at Stawell against the older
horses and then had a more serious hit-out at
Camperdown after that, and she's now ready to
go to the races.”
Oliver in Ingratiating’s Diamond cornerAlso set to line-up against Enthaar is Godolphin-
owned colt Ingratiating (Frosted), who beat
Tuesday’s Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and
Geldings) (Listed, 1000m) winner General
Beau (Brazen Beau) in the Maribyrnong Trial
Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on debut in October.
Ingratiating subsequently ran second in the
Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), finishing a
neck behind Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon),
who resumed on the Gold Coast earlier this
month with victory over subsequent Magic
Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner
Shaquero (Shalaa), a race in which Finance
Tycoon ran sixth. "I'm looking forward to
riding him. He's come back well and he takes
on the boom horse, if you like, in Enthaar, who
is the favourite for the Diamond, so it's a good
chance to see where he's at," Damien Oliver,
who has ridden the James Cummings-trained
Ingratiating in both of his starts and will be back
aboard at the weekend, told Racing.com. "He's
only had two starts and he won his first start
here and was a close second to Finance Tycoon,
who proved the form pretty strong through the
Magic Millions, so there's already some strong
lines there.” Enthaar’s remaining three rivals
are her stablemate Son Of Mercury (Street
Boss), Peter and Paul Snowden’s newcomer
Frostin’ (Frosted) and fellow debutant Twilight
(Teofilo), who is trained by Luke Oliver.
Emeralds starts out on G1 path in Expressway John Sargent does not expect Emeralds
(Sebring) to upstage her higher-profile
Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) rivals at
Rosehill on Saturday, but he is anticipating a
profitable autumn from the emerging mare.
The four-year-old, who claimed the scalp
of subsequent Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)
winner Greysful Glamour (Stratum) when
landing the Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m)
in October, is being set for the Coolmore
Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) on March 13. "I think
she will have a real boom autumn, especially
if there is a bit of rain around," Sargent said.
"It will be too short for her, but we will kick
her off there on Saturday and then she will
go to the Guy Walter then the Coolmore
Classic." Emeralds will face seven rivals in
the Expressway, with the field reduced by one
following the early scratching of Southern
Lad (Ocean Park), who will instead line-up
in a 1200-metre Benchmark 88 later on the
card. The eight to stand their ground also
includes Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
and Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Ole
Kirk (Written Tycoon), who has drawn the
inside, and classy Godolphin mare Savatiano
(Street Cry), who has gate two. That duo were
equal-$3.60 favourites with TAB fixed odds
yesterday. Emeralds has drawn gate six and
Jason Collett has been booked to ride both
at the weekend and throughout her autumn
campaign.
Big Parade to play the stalker Also at Rosehill, the Mark Newnham-trained Big
Parade (Deep Field) is set to be ridden patiently
when he takes on Southern Lad and eight
other rivals in the ATC Members Recognition
Handicap (1200m). The four-year-old proved
dynamic when scoring a three and a quarter-
length win over 1200 metres at Randwick on
December 19, where he sat off the leader
Oakfield Twilight (Zoffany) before dashing
right away. But things didn’t pan out over the
same course and distance three weeks later
as he was peppered by Oakfield Twilight to
his outside before succumbing late, beaten
just under a length by King Of Hastings
(Ilovethiscity) and Bandersnatch (Casino
Prince), with the latter having since landed
the Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m). Big
TOSEN STARDOM - FIRST YEARLINGS SELLING 2021| 9 |
Parade has drawn an outside alley in gate ten
on Saturday, with on-pace runners Lillemor
and Masked Crusader berthed closer in. “I’d
love to see him be ridden just off one similar
to when he won,’’ Newnham told Racing NSW.
“He’s better off drawn out a little bit instead of
having to be forced to hold a spot.”
Six rivals for BehemothBehemoth (All Too Hard) is the red-hot
favourite to land the Durbridge Stakes
(Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville on Saturday
with the dual Group 1 winner set to face just
six rivals. TAB yesterday installed the All-
Star Mile (1600m) hopeful as a $1.35 chance
for his comeback assignment, which will
be his first run since finishing tenth behind
Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) in the
$15 million Everest (1200m) at Randwick in
October. He will jump from barrier five under
Todd Pannell. Behemoth will clash with
Richard and Chantelle Jolly’s two All-Star Mile
nominees, Kemalpasa (Magnus) and Regalo
Di Gaetano (Supreme Class). Superhard (All
Too Hard), who was formerly with Lindsay
Smith and is now trained at Broken Hill by
Michael Wayman, will also line-up, alongside
the Phillip Stokes-trained Symphonette
(Helmet) and Amberdi (Ambidexter) for Sue
and Jason Jaensch.
Star sprinters dazzle in trial Star sprinters Nature Strip (Nicconi) and
Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) are set to clash
in next month’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes
(Gr 1, 1000m) after the duo finished first
and second respectively in a Rosehill trial
yesterday morning. The James Cummings-
trained Bivouac, who was on Tuesday
confirmed the joint-highest rated sprinter
in the world with a rating of 125, was not
extended when running second to the
124-rated Nature Strip. Coolmore Stud Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) winner September Run (Exceed
And Excel) finished fifth. Nature Strip's time
of 54.94 seconds for the 900-metre trip was
almost a second quicker than the figure
posted by Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) (55.85s) in
the following trial.
Samadoubt makes pleasing returnSamadoubt was making his first public
appearance since the 2019 Craven Plate (Gr
3, 2000m) having been sidelined by a tendon
injury and trainer Bjorn Baker has indicated the
seven-year-old will trial again before resuming
in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at
Randwick on March 6. "I was just thrilled to see
he has still got the zest for racing," Baker said.
"He didn't run a great time but it was just the
trial we wanted first up. We will probably look
for another trial and he will head towards the
Canterbury Stakes into the George Ryder, all
going well, but at this stage he is very much a
day-to-day proposition so we're not getting
carried away." Rachel King, who partnered
Bivouac earlier in the morning, was also
aboard Golden Eagle (1500m) winner Colette
(Hallowed Crown) as she ran seventh behind
Samadoubt. Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
winner Verry Elleegant (Zed) finished sixth in
the same heat without being asked any serious
questions by James McDonald.
Richards happy with Kahma Lass Kahma Lass (Darci Brahma) ran eighth in the
trial won by Nature Strip and trainer Jamie
Richards was delighted with the first Sydney
appearance of his New Zealand 1,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) winner, who is being set on a
traditional fillies' path encompassing the Light
Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick
on February 13 and the Surround Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) at the same venue a fortnight
later. Richards won last year’s Surround with
Probabeel (Savabeel) and said Kahma Lass
compares favourably with her stablemate.
"They're not too dissimilar. They've got a pretty
good record, both of them," Richards said.
"Probabeel has probably got a bit more size and
scope but Kahma Lass has done a good job on
the track so we'll see how we get on. She's got a
lovely attitude and we're really happy with her."
Richards ponders Sydney for Probabeel Providing an update on Probabeel, Richards
said a Sydney autumn campaign is still on the
table for his Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner, although the $5 million All-Star
Mile is her immediate target on March 13.
There was speculation that the four-year-old
would campaign exclusively in Melbourne
this autumn, but Richards said that is not
necessarily the case. "We haven't ruled out
Sydney but we're going to get ready for the
All-Star first," he said. "She will probably
run in the Geoffrey Bellmaine on February 6
and then maybe in the Futurity on February
20." Probabeel will continue towards her
first racecourse start since finishing seventh
behind Sir Dragonet (Camelot) in the Cox
Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 24 by taking
in a 1000-metre barrier trial at Geelong today.
Saffiano tops Inglis Digital at $290,000 Two-time winner Saffiano (More Than
Ready) yesterday realised $290,000 in the
Inglis January (Late) Online Auction, heading
a record six lots that sold for over $100,000.
Joining Saffiano in the six-figure bracket were
fellow racehorses Oregon (Zoustar) ($125,000),
Vanderland (Vancouver) ($120,000), Campese
(Tornado) ($105,000) and Colonel (Snitzel)
($105,000) along with broodmare Phoenix
Park (Thorn Park) ($230,000). The Rangal Park
dispersal was also a success, grossing $324,250
for owner Eric Buttler. Overall, the January
(Late) auction grossed $2.66 million, with a
clearance rate of 85 per cent. The Aquis Farm-
offered Saffiano, who won two of his seven starts
for Chris Waller and Annabel Neasham, was
purchased by Hunter Valley Bloodstock. “He’s
lightly raced and has proven already he knows
how to win races so I wish his new connections
all the best with him. They’ll have a lot of fun,’’
said Aquis’ managing director Shane McGrath.
“He contested a Group 1 at his fourth start last
year, that’s the type of horse he is, but Aquis is a
company that, as part of their business model,
trades horses all the time and we want to
continue to be known as a vendor that offers fit,
reliable, sound horses to the tried-horse market
and Saffiano is certainly that.”

usage in races. The series, consisting of
five heats plus a final, will be exclusive to
Victorian country trainers, and jockeys will
be required to use their whip no more than
fives times throughout the entire race, which
is a reduction to the current rules that allow
riders to whip their mount five times before
the 100-metre mark, with no restrictions
thereafter. "The trial of races with limited
use of the whip throughout the upcoming
Country Mile Races Series is an important
exercise which will assist us with gathering
data in areas such as wagering, fan
engagement, participant support, conduct
and safety of the race, and impacts on form
lines,” said RV executive general manager of
racing, Greg Carpenter. "This information
can only add value to the quality of the
deliberations by all of the state principal
racing associations that will be debating
potential changes to current whip rules
over coming months.”
Old rivals trade blows ahead of Rapid Racing Aussie rules legends Kevin Sheedy and
Denis Pagan will meet on the racetrack for
the first time at tomorrow’s Rapid Racing
fixture at Flemington. The duo have been
facing off for the best part of six decades on
the pitch and they will renew their rivalry
across the seven-race card, with Group
1-winning owner Sheedy coaching the
country jockey squad, while Pagan will be in
charge of the metropolitan riders. "We have
got the big names and I want to tell them,
it's not a popularity contest, I don't want to
be popular with you, I want some respect,"
Pagan, referencing the likes of Damien Oliver
and Craig Williams who will saddle up for
his team, told Racing.com with his tongue-
in-cheek. "It'll be some old school rock and
roll and if it's too hot in the kitchen, get to
the outhouse." The jockeys' challenge is a
key feature of the Rapid Racing program,
which will see seven races run down the
Flemington straight at 30-minute intervals.
366 horses were entered for the card that runs
from 3:30pm to 6:30pm (AEDT) and all but
one race filled with the maximum of 12 final
acceptors.
Kelly banks on progressive War ToyUnbeaten gelding War Toy (Time For War)
will make his city debut at Eagle Farm today
following an impressive performance on
debut at Ballina earlier this month. The Les
Kelly-trained three-year-old, who was kept
off the track at two, landed his 1300-metre
maiden by two lengths on January 3 and steps
up to a Class 1 Handicap over 1400 metres
today. “He’s by Time For War and most
of the breed need time,” Kelly told Racing
Queensland. “He’s improved but I think he’ll
be better suited over further ground. He’s
only had one start and he’s still a bit green but
he’ll be competitive.” War Toy is one of four
runners for Kelly today, who also has Take Tea
(Testa Rossa) and Jackpot Jay (Zoffany) in the
1400-metre Benchmark 78 and Merlin’s Magic
(Camelot) in the Class 3 Handicap (1600m).
Newhaven Park extends sponsorship of Country Championships Newhaven Park have extended their

commences on February 13 at Coffs Harbour
and culminates with the $500,000 Country
Championships Final at Randwick, a race
that Newhaven Park have sponsored since
2017. “We are delighted to have substantially
increased our commitments to the New South
Wales racing industry to now include each
of the regional qualifiers, truly making it the
Newhaven Park Country Championships,”
said Newhaven principal John Kelly. “The
Country Championships fairytale continues
to capture the hearts and minds of all racing
people. It gives grassroots racing participants
an opportunity to compete on the biggest
stage each year.”

Two feature rides for ElliotRyan Elliot will be aiming to continue his success
at Saturday’s Wellington Cup meeting with two
feature rides. Elliot, who rode Gorbachev (Gorky
Park) to victory in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3,
3200m) two years ago, will partner Love For All
(Love Conquers All) in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr
3, 1600m) and Rock On Wood (Redwood) - trained
by his mother, Leanne Elliot - in the Thorndon
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Reflecting on his success in
2019, Elliot said: “It was a really good win for me
and my career. It helped kick me off.” Love For
All finished runner-up in the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3,
1600m) last start and Elliot has high hopes for the
filly. “She raced really well in the Eulogy against a
bunch of nice horses and I hope she can step up
against the class of these fillies on Saturday,” he
said. On the chances of last-start Zabeel Classic
(Gr 1, 2000m) fourth Rock On Wood, who will
take on 12-times Group 1 winner Melody Belle
(Commands), Elliot added: “His run in the Zabeel
was very good, he was just a little bit unlucky that
In A Twinkling came down to the fence and cut
our run up. He has been working superb. If we are
ever going to get close to the bonny mare (Melody
Belle), we are going to have to get her fresh-up.”
Easter Handicap goal for Super StrikeAnniversary Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) winner
Super Strike (Super Easy) will return from his
summer break next week, with trainer Richard
Collett targeting a two-race autumn campaign that
will culminate in a bid to win the Easter Handicap
(Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie. Collett was not tempted
to make a return visit to Trentham this weekend
to tackle the Thorndon Mile after the four-year-
old scored impressively in the traditional lead
up to the Thorndon, the Anniversary Handicap,
at the venue a fortnight ago. “I haven’t even
had a look at the field for the Thorndon, so that
probably tells you how much interest I had in
starting him in it,” Collett said. “He’s been in the
paddock since he travelled home from Trentham
and he has been thriving. He will have another
week there and then we will start his build-up to
the Easter. He will have one run before the Easter,
probably at Te Aroha, and that will be it for the
time being.”

champion Hawwaam (Silvano) will join
Newmarket trainer William Haggas from Mike
de Kock ahead of a summer campaign in
Britain. De Kock confirmed the news on the
Nick Luck Daily podcast on Tuesday. “It’ll be
very interesting to see how the South African
form will stack up with your (British) horses,”
said De Kock. “I’ve noticed some South
African horses can struggle when there’s cut
in the ground because they’re not used to
it but if he can adapt to the situation there,
I think he’ll do very, very well.” Owned by
Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Hawwaam,
who was last seen taking out back-to-back
Grade 1s at Turffontein in June, was given a
rating of 120 at the Longines World Racing
Awards on Tuesday.

getting some winners now his first crop has
turned three. Chaparella (High Chaparral),
a dual Listed winner of eight races and dam

horses from three foals to race, including Listed
winner Riva Capri (Atlante).
Lot 766 is a Vadamos (Monsun) colt from
a winning Commands (Danehill) mare. She is
a half-sister to versatile Listed winner Johnny

including the National Sprint (Listed, 1400m)
at Canberra, and to Power Of Pegasus (Palace

winner The Centenary (Mastercraftsman). Her
third dam is a three-quarter sister to Octagonal
(Zabeel). This is, of course, the famous Eight
Carat family.

company, the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te
Rapa, the Rotorua Cup (Gr 3, 2170m) and two
Listed races.
Lot 854 is Kiltannon Stables’ Burgundy
(Redoute’s Choice) filly from La Etoile (Thorn
Park), whose five wins included the Rich Hill
Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie. She was also
four times stakes-placed, including third in the
Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), and her
granddam, Domino (Grosvenor), won both
the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the New
Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).
Wrote is the sire of Lot 871, a filly from the
draft of Highview Stud. Her dam is a winning
sister to Za Magic (Magic Albert), winner of
the Doomben Classic (Gr 3, 1615m) and the
Sunshine Coast Guineas (Listed, 1600m).
The filly is a direct descendant of champion
Surround (Sovereign Edition).
Lot 905 is a filly by Vadamos being offered
by CH Bloodstock. She is a half-sister to Group
2-placed Jimmy Lincoln (Jimmy Choux) and
Listed-placed Amor Fati (Showcasing). Her

IT'S IN THE BLOOD

TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS
There was a dash of irony in the
powerfully-built Dosh winning the
fillies’ Blue Diamond Preview at
Caulfield on Tuesday. In leading
throughout for a superb fighting victory, the
hulking filly brought more success to a stud
that’s prospered since deciding bigger is not
always better.
A bold decision by Queensland breeding
byword Glenlogan Park three years ago to ship
out its stallions and slash its broodmare band
by two-thirds paid off handsomely - almost
spectacularly - on one of Australia’s most
tantalising days for two-year-olds.
Not only did Dosh take the fillies’ event,
35 minutes earlier Extreme Warrior had come
within half a length of providing Glenlogan with
the Blue Diamond Previews double, racing wide
but running on for a very meritorious second to
General Beau in the colts’ division.
Dosh and Extreme Warrior are part of the
initial crop of Glenlogan products bred since
the south-east Queensland farm - famed for
breeding Savabeel among a list of Group 1
winners - undertook a major change of tack
in 2018, inspired in part by the difficulties of
gaining traction from up north in the Hunter
Valley-dominated national stallion scene.
“We made the decision to stop standing
stallions and come down to a boutique number
of high-end broodmares, and really concentrate
on trying to breed these top-end yearlings and
racehorses,” Glenlogan’s general manager
Steve Morley told It’s In The Blood.
“The current crop of two-year-olds is the
first that’s a result of that decision, and so to
have a couple of horses off the farm now being
high in the discussions for a Blue Diamond is
very encouraging, and something we’re very
proud of.”
One early move around the time of the
transition was to put the Danehill-line mare
Raise Up to the relatively new and unproven
Rich Enuff. The stakes-winning, Caulfield
Guineas-placed stallion had mixed his time
between co-owners Glenlogan and Woodside
Park Stud, but would now stand solely at the
Victorian farm, alongside his sire, Written
Tycoon.
Raise Up, a speedy and sizeable multiple
city winner in Brisbane, had thrown two colts
who would reach no great heights - the latter,
Sunlander, by Glenlogan’s Real Saga, claimed
a Brisbane city maiden. But when the filly by
Rich Enuff appeared - an early drop, foaled on
August 9, 2018 - this mating was quickly shown
to be a resounding choice.
Dosh was a large yearling, well-
proportioned, and a smooth mover. Trainer
Grahame Begg went to $155,000 to secure
her, and now has one of the favourites for the
Blue Diamond. Her Preview success followed
another Group 3 victory on debut in the Ottawa
Stakes up the Flemington straight on Oaks Day.
“Raise Up was a very talented racemare
herself, but there’s no question this filly Dosh
was her stand-out foal,” Morley said.
“Right from the time she was born she
was very athletic. She’s very big but has a lot of
athleticism. She was on everybody’s radar at the
sales because of the way she looked and the way
she handled herself, and I’m really thrilled for
Grahame Begg, who was determined to take her
home when he first saw her at the sale last year.
“We’ve always supported Rich Enuff
strongly. We knew he had a great affiliation with
Danehill-line mares, and with Raise Up being
by Shovhog it was a natural choice. It was a nice
mating genetically and physically. Raise Up is
also a big mare, but very athletic, and she leaves
that muscle and bone structure and frame in
her offspring.”
For all that, however, Raise Up has a patchy
record of conception. She threw Dosh, then

missed, then threw a sister to Dosh before
missing again last spring.
“We have found it a bit hard to get her
in foal when she’s got a foal at foot. but if she
keeps throwing them with the talent of Dosh,
I don’t mind getting them every second year,”
Morley said. “We’ve got the full sister at foot at
the moment, and she’s almost a mirror image
of Dosh, so there’s a bit of cause for excitement
there.”
While Dosh made it two Group 3 wins
from two starts on Tuesday, Extreme Warrior
completed two Listed second placings at his
second start, both at Caulfield.
The colt was bought for $160,000 by Mick
Price and Dermot Farrington at last year’s
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, after
Morley had two years earlier swooped to buy
the dam, Heart Of Thrills, in foal to Price’s 2016
Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice for
$200,000 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare
Sale.
Morley’s purchase in April, 2018 was timely
indeed. A week earlier, Heart Of Thrills’ first
named foal Thrillster, who’d been stakes-placed
on debut, won Bendigo’s VOBIS Gold Rush. A
few days later the filly won the VOBIS Sires at
Caulfield. That spring, she took the Atlantic
Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley before a close
fifth in Amphitrite’s Thousand Guineas.
While Morley may not have designed
Extreme Warrior’s conception, aside from
refining his broodmare band there was perhaps
extra incentive to buying Heart Of Thrills, who
herself boasted only a Wagga maiden win
from four starts, as she is by one of Glenlogan’s
favourite sons in Show A Heart.
Now 23, four-time Group 1 winner Show
A Heart enjoys the quiet life on the farm these
days alongside another Queensland favourite,
Falvelon, 24, who was also retired from stud
duties in Glenlogan’s 2018 recalibration.
At the same time, Show A Heart continues
to perform as a broodmare sire. He sits 29th on
the Australian table for this season with a more
than healthy 55 winners from 149 runners,
headed by Sovereign Award - a dual Group 3
winner in Melbourne last spring - and with
more promise held by Extreme Warrior.
He also has something which, while once
everywhere, is now increasingly rare - a Star
Kingdom sireline (through Brave Warrior-
Cossack Warrior-Bletchingly-Biscay) - that
Morley believes mixes well with Danehill-
descended sires like Extreme Choice (Not A
Single Doubt-Redoute’s Choice).
“Show A Heart is doing a really good job
as a broodmare sire for the opportunities
afforded to him,” Morley said. “Being a Star
Kingdom-line stallion, and probably the last
of the commercial Star Kingdom-line stallions,
he’s had a real affiliation with this Northern
Dancer-line of stallions right across the board.
Physically he also suits because he’s got plenty
of length and a great hip and tail, and that can
often suit these Danehill line horses.”
Heart Of Thrills’ broodmare credentials
are also supported by her other named foal,
the stakes-placed four-year-old mare Free
Thrills (Unencumbered). And there’s still more
excitement at Glenlogan over what Morley
describes as a “beautiful” yearling filly, who’ll
be offered at the Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale, by no less a heavyweight than I
Am Invincible.
“Heart Of Thrills has had three foals to the
track for three black-type horses, so she’s really
performing,” Morley said of his 11-year-old,
who is now in foal to Written Tycoon.
With two live Blue Diamond chances,
and with eight lots also to be put up at the
Inglis Classic Yearling Sale two weeks before
that race, it’s fair to say the upswing from
Glenlogan’s downsizing is looking very
promising indeed.

Tony Cruz will aim to add further
lustre to his extraordinary Hong
Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) record
after Delightful Laos (Baltic King)
emerged as a potential Classic contender with
victory in the Class 2 Chater Handicap (1650m)
at Happy Valley yesterday.
Crowning a dominant night for Cruz, the
Irish import will now be set for the Hong Kong
Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) - the second leg of
the Four-Year-Old Classic Series - at Sha Tin on
February 21.
With four Derby triumphs as a jockey with
Co-Tack (Top Role) (1983), Tea For Two II
(Northfields) (1987), Clear City (Bolak) (1987) and
Makarpura Star (Native Kingdom) (1995) and two
more as a trainer with Lucky Owners (Danehill)
(2004) and Helene Mascot (Peintre Celebre)
(2008), Cruz knows what it takes to win Hong
Kong’s premier staying test for four-year-olds.
“We’ll try for the Classic Cup with Delightful
Laos and we’ll see from there,” Cruz said. “Then
we’ll enter him for the Derby as well.
“Hopefully now he has won, he showed a lot
of promise (tonight), I’m sure the handicapper
will consider him to be in the race.
“I believe this horse really wants 2000
metres. He likes the fast ground, he’s a big horse
but if he can get into the race, I would love to
run him there.”
Cruz boosted his 2020/21 stable tally to 31
with a treble after California Legend (Camelot)
(Christophe Soumillon) and Dream Warriors
(Smart Missile) (Karis Teetan) preceded Derek
Leung and Delightful Laos into the winners’ circle.
A son of Baltic King (Danetime), Delightful
Laos has recorded three wins in Hong Kong
with each of them materialising over 1650
metres at the city circuit.
Christophe Soumillon made an inspiring
recovery from the shattering disappointment of
suffering injury aboard Enrich Delight (Medaglia
D’Oro) in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed,
1600m) on Sunday to
register a double.
The Belgian
partnered California
Legend to victory in
the Class 5 Queensway
Handicap (1650m) for
Cruz before guiding We
The South (Your Song)
to a comprehensive
success in the Class 3
Connaught Handicap
(1000m) for Frankie Lor.
Soumillon was stood
down by doctors at Sha
Tin after suffering a back strain in the incident
with Enrich Delight but was determined to
rebound strongly at Happy Valley.
“The back is not great but it’s still ok to ride,”
Soumillon said.
Joao Moreira (77) maintained a 23-win
buffer over Zac Purton (54) after the pair both
produced doubles.
The Anomaly (Real Impact) became trainer
Jimmy Ting’s first debut winner as a PPG
(privately purchased griffin) with an upset
success in the second section of the Class 4 Ice
House Handicap (1200m).
Sent out as a 63-1 chance, the gelding might
have defied the market, but confirmed Ting’s
opinion of the three-year-old.
“I was a little bit surprised but I thought
he would run very close because this race
was not very strong,” Ting said after watching
Keith Yeung thread a narrow gap late to win
impressively.
“We got a good draw (barrier two) and I
thought he would run very close. Before the
race, I thought he would finish third, fourth or
fifth - very close.
“To win is a little bit of a surprise but he is
a good horse, a very good horse. I think his best
distance is a mile.”
Yeung’s effort ended a run of outs for the
rider since early November.
“He’s a good jockey and he is always riding
trackwork for me and telling me what’s going
on with the horses and so I give him some
support,” Ting said.
Paul O’Sullivan and Zac Purton combined
with another big-priced winner when 33-1 shot
Moment Of Power (Exceed And Excel) again
proved his sprinting prowess with his eighth
victory over the 1000-metre course.
“He’s a little marvel, he's a one-trick pony
around the Valley,” O’Sullivan said after the
veteran gelding led throughout to land the
Class 4 Glenealy Handicap (1000m).
“He’s in the right place at the right time.
He’s a very good speed horse.”
The eight-year-old had not won for almost
two years but a gradual drop through the
classes to last night’s contest was the key to the
belated breakthrough.
Purton also succeeded on Ever Force
(Toronado) for Danny Shum, while Moreira
bookended the meeting by scoring with
Tigerlad (Tiger Prawn) in the opener for Tony
Millard and the John Size-trained Savaquin
(Savabeel) in the last.
The victory was the 35th for Size this season,
lifting the 11-time champion trainer to within
four of Caspar Fownes (39).
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on
Sunday.
