The National Youth Service Action and Social Development Research Institute (NYSASDRI) is a non-profit organization that reaches approximately 5.2 million people in Odisha with its innovative and sustainable development strategies. Established as a village youth club in 1973, the organization is registered under the Indian Society Registration Act, XXI of 1860 (Registration No. DKL-390/80), the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of 1976 (Registration. No. 104890005), and 12(A) & 80(G) of the Income Tax Act. At present NYSASDRI operates in the most remote and inaccessible areas of 12 districts of Odisha where more than 60% of the population is living below the Poverty Line. Our development initiative covers the poor vulnerable sections of the population including women, children, elderly, disabled, destitute, marginal farmers, rural artisans and other such under privileged. We have developed an integrated strategy by combining a direct service delivery approach and support activities such as research, advocacy, and networking.

To facilitate the process of establishing a just society. To enable underprivileged people to gain power and lead a higher quality life with access to common resources.

NYSASDRI works in 12 districts of Odisha, namely Angul, Cuttack,

Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Jagatsingpur, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Kendrapada,

Khurda, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Sambalpur. In these districts,

NYSASDRI works with marginalized people from scheduled tribes

and scheduled castes, destitute women, children, families from

below the poverty line, elderly persons, people with disabilities, small

farmers and people needing eye care and general health care.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE DURING THE YEAR 2015-16

Family Counselling Centre

The Family Counselling Centre (FCC) of

NYSASDRI has given need based services to 148

families through counselling in both joint and individual

sessions. Counsellors attend home visits to collect

information from neighbours and community members

to learn about the reality of the problems.

Some families were referred to different support service institutions including the legal aid cell, the police station, the short-stay home, Swadhar

Home, Ujjawala , Rehabilitation Centre , and the women's cell. 91 Family disturbance cases were also served during the period. In addition, four

sub-committee meetings have successfully taken place. These sub-committee meetings provide opportunity for the members to review the

progress of the program and prepare future plans. Finally, through leaflets, posters, and banners, the family counselling centre has provided

education to the community about better self-control and reducing violence towards women.

Looking after the sufferings of the distressed women and girls, NYSASDRI started the short stay home in the year1996 at Santhasara village of Gondia Block in

Dhenkanal district. Last year 2015-16, 46 women and 23 children were enrolled in the Short Stay Home (SSH). Through this programme 47 women and 33 girls

have been placed in their in-laws,' parent's or relatives houses. The residents of SSH have formed SHG and participate in income generating programs such as

tailoring, kitchen garden activities, broom making, nursery etc. 14 children are enrolled in the local Integrated Child Development Centre and primary school. The

women are given several forms of support such as accommodation, food, counselling, legal service, vocational training and health check up. The home committee

of SSH has been reviewing quarterly and the programme making necessary changes as appropriate.

Short Stay Home For distress women and Girls

Looking after the need of professional journalists

and social workers, NYSASDRI started the

NYSASDRI School of Journalism & Social Work in

the year 2013. The school has since been

recognized by the Government of Odisha Tourism &

Culture, (Culture) Department and affiliated to Utkal

University of Culture where students can receive a

Master in Social Work (MSW) or Master of Arts in

Journalism and Mass Communication. In the first

batch of MSW, out of 16 Students, 75% of students have secured 1st class marks. During this academic session total 25 students enrolled in MSW and 21

students in MA in Journalism and Mass Communication. Besides this the school has organised a welcome address for new students and conducted a

farewell for old students. Other activities such as seminars, field work and NGO placement work as per course syllabus were also conducted during the

session.


10 no Rajiv Gandhi National Crèche (Scheme) centres are running in the Gondia Block of Dhenkanal District for the benefit of families who live below the poverty line. 250 children ranging from 2 to 5 years old are availing the services from creche centres every day from 9 am to 5 pm (except Sundays and National Holidays). Two teachers are managing each centre and help with tasks such as giving supplemented-nutrition food and health checkups. We teach the children based on a non-formal and joyful approach. There is a management committee in each centre who guides and monitors the programme time to time.

Creche

172 tribal girls’ are receiving primary education from class 1 to class

V with residential facilities at the NYSASDRI Educational

complex, Muniguda of Rayagarh district. The school provides

accommodation, food, dress materials, toiletry items, teaching

learning materials, health check ups, provisions of medicine, pocket

money and educational encouragement. This year a total of 26

students passed out of the school and 21 New students were

enrolled . The students have also participated in different cultural

programmes, annual sports, annual functions, observation and

cerebration of festivals and national days etc. These students also

participated in speech, drawing, dance and song competition during

festivals and events.

A new toilet complex was constructed at NYSASDRI Educational Complex, Hukumtola and the tribal girls are availing bathing and toilet facilities

from the complex. Total 08 new toilets along with 04 big common baths, 03 overhead tanks and one big dual pit tank have been constructed in the

toilet complex. To avoid open defecation tribal girls regularly use the toilet complex in the campus. As the old toilets were inadequate and unusable,

so these toilets will be renovated in the near future depending upon the availability of funds.

Odisha Demonstrative Multipurpose Community School (Renamed to NYSASDRI School)

The Odisha Multipurpose Demonstrative (ODMCS) was established at

Kokuajhara, P.O- Kashipur, in the Gondia Block of Dhenknal district of Odisha

state in the year 2010. Its objective is to enhance the quality of education in rural

tribal areas. This school was renamed to NYSASDRI School in 2015.The

school’s curriculum matches the Indian CBSE standards (from Grades I to V)

and English Medium School standards. In the future the organization seeks to fill

the educational gap that exists between rural and urban areas. This year 45

children are continuing education from class nursery to standard V with CBSE

pattern. The school organised an annual function, sports, and other co-curricular

activities in the year 2015-16

Located in Govindpur Village of Dhenkanal the ODM World School is providing modern technology-based education in English from class Nursery

to Class VIII. The school was started during the 2012-2013 academic year and a total of 185 Students have been enrolled so far. The school

organised different events during the last academic year. The annual sport was conducted in the month of December and in the month of January

the annual function and the cultural evening were organized on school premises.

ODM World School


Deemed Orphan Programme

14 children are availing benefit through this programme. Under this program, NYSASDRI ensures supply of nutritional food, dress materials, health

care and pre education facilities for selected children, (children whose mothers are staying in Short Stay Home).

Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) - Batch V Sadar -1

NYSASDRI is implementing the integrated watershed

development programme (IWMP Batch –V Sadar- 1)in 07

Grampanchayats that cover 11 micro watersheds in 18 villages of

Dhenkanal Sadar area. During the reporting period, due to some

modification at national policy level, the new modified programme

has not been implemented. Therefore, other supportive

programmes under the project such as the community

mobilisation, village meetings and construction of entry point

activities were conducted.

Women empowerment We are raising the income and self-esteem of poor tribal women through micro

entrepreneurship in Gondia Block, Dhenkanal District, Odisha. 208 women,

from 20 women self help groups, participated in capacity building and skill

up-gradation training. In the second year 28 beneficiaries covered for financial

support for micro entrepreneurship and after revolving the same, another 68

new beneficiaries added for finical support by group. Yet altogether 156

women benefited through Seed money and group.

After its success, other women formed 05 new women self help groups (10 in each group) on their own. Group saving has increased in different banks. After

these initiatives the frequency of contact to important service providers has improved.

A team from AIDE MONDIALE ISC, Paris students visited our organisation in the month of April 2015 and participated in different programmes at

ODM Community School, Kashipur; ODM World School, Govindpur; Kalinga Eye Hospital, Dhenkanal; NYSASDRI Educational Complex,

Hukumtola and SEED Kanyashram, Malkangiri. During their visit, they spent time with students, staff and community members in different

programmes.

A hostel has been constructed of 107.86 cubic meters for boys on the ground floor and another 107.86 cubic meters for girls on the first floor with

barrier free environment. Both the hostel floors are well equipped with 50 beds and study table. Besides this a kitchen, dining room, drinking water,

electricity, computer and internet facilities are available in the campus.

Construction of school hostel

Availability, affordability and accessibility are major barriers to eye care services. So, through reach out camps, KEH extends the reach of quality

eye care to the poor and needy of the state. In the 2015-16 year, 231 free outreach camps were run and through that 9,191 free sight restoration

eye surgeries were conducted. Apart from surgeries, KEH not only works for sight restoration surgeries but also on eye care Education, Training,

Research Advocacy and Capacity building.


The social disadvantages of being visually impaired are enormous: 50% of the blind in impoverished countries report a loss of social standing and

decision-making authority, and 80% of blind women note a loss of authority within their families. The impact of blindness and poor vision on quality

of life is particularly alarming for those living in poverty. Fortunately, there is hope that we can reverse these devastating impacts, as long as the

medical community continues to increase access to surgery and care. Eye care is an integral part of NYSASDRI and the eye care programmes of

NYSASDRI are carried out by its eye hospital, namely the Kalinga Eye Hospital, which is located at the district headquarters of Dhenkanal (around

30 Kilometers from NYSASDRI). At Kalinga Eye Hospital (KEH), the trained and dedicated professionals with access to state of the art ophthalmic

infrastructure render high quality eye care without bias to both the paying and the poor patients.

The President of IAFF, USA, Prof. Subhas Ch Mohapatra, has visited NYSASDRI in June 2015 and

during his visit he spent time at SEED Kanyashram, S. Tandapalli, NYSASDRI Educational Complex

and at Kalinga Eye Hospital, Dhenkanal. During his stay at SEED Kanyashram two new chilli plots were

developed under his supervision; also similar kinds of bins were prepared at NYSASDRI Educational

Complex, which is located at Hukumtola. These plots were prepared under the conservation and

hydroponic technology. Prof. Mohapatra has also demonstrated the Sili Cultures, Drip irrigation,

Fustigation, Hydroponics and Gravity-Feed auto flow to NYSASDRI staff members. These low cost, low

labor planting methods require no soil and will be integrated into future NYSASDRI projects.

Short stay Home for life skill Education of socially excluded children

Under the guidance of Prof. Johannes Bircher of Switzerland, NYSASDRI imparted the health education program through a unique model the Meikirch Model. Under this model, we have sensitized people in different health related activities. One of them was hygiene and sanitation and under that the construction of toilets. Afterwards, our staff encouraged each house hold of the project area proper use of the toilets. Besides this NYSASDRI also encouraged use of shoes during toilet use, proper hand-washing before taking food and after toilet, preservation of vegetable, use of mosquito nets, regularly practiced exercise and avoiding unnecessary stress at work, etc. For this NYSASDRI has prepared information materials, journals and sensitized people through newspapers, NYSASDRI has also organised capacity building at block and

district levels. These educational materials are developed in local languages as well as in English and are distributed in different forums, (seminars at state and national level). One website has been developed through which lot of educational and materials up loaded.

CHETANA has supported for construction of buildings and purchased equipment

that will help imparting life skill training to social excluded children. After

construction of the desired building, it was inaugurated by Mr. Till Seiler and Prof

(Dr) Narayan Chandra Pati, Gen. Secretary, Jewels International, Bhubaneswar

on 24th December 2015. Now this centre plans to render life skill education to 30

under privileged children in the coming year.

Meikirch Model by Professor Johannes Bircher Switzerland, for health care education

Several Volunteers from state, national and international organizations and institutions

participated in various activities of NYSASDRI. They shared their individual expertise

and skills various programs. Interaction between the volunteers and our staff was also

very helpful in improving the skill and knowledge of NYSASDRI staff. These volunteers

come from diverse backgrounds, and have included professional photographers,

medical students, undergraduates, and professionals from all over the world.
