Welcome to the St John National Youth Festival!

The Northern Region Youth team is excited to be bringing you this years festival!

The St John National Youth Festival has a long history of bringing cadets and

leaders together to share ideas, meet new people, broaden their experience andknowledge, and to have a lot of fun.

Perhaps one of the most important parts of the festival is the annual National Youth

Competitions bringing together our best cadets for the ultimate level competition!

However the festival is about much more than competitions, and we encourage you

    to get involved.

This newsletter will provide an overview of the festival, how to register and costs.

We will be sending further communication closer to the date.

    Festival theme and logo

This years festival is focussed on our young people,

with Hauora as the festival theme. Aspects of Hauora

will be woven throughout the festival programme.

We want to congratulate George Mita from Northern

Region for providing the base of our logo representing

the 2013 National Youth Festival. The logo really

goes to the heart of what Hauora represents. The four koru represent the four dimensions of health

and well-being. They represent the basic needs to have good health: te taha

hinengaro (mental and emotional health), te taha wairua (spiritual health), te taha

tanana (physical health) and te taha whnau (social health).

The four koru converging on Northern Region represent nga hau e wha (four winds)

coming together, just like the three regions are coming together for the festival.

The hei matau (fish hook) in the South Island representing strength, determination

and good health. It also provides safe travels over water for our South Island

    whnau.

The Maori koru design is inspired by the New Zealand fern frond unfurling as it

grows. It represents peace, personal growth, positive change and awakening.

The colours of the four koru have meaning in that the green is known as the South

Island colour which starts near Picton, yellow as Central Region which starts in the

centre of their region, and blue as Northern Region. The fourth koru is a mix of the

    three representing wider whanau.

Finally we have chosen to include Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island in the

logo as we are very proud of our island divisions, and fully embrace them as a part of

    our region.

    Key venues

    Accommodation

The Festival Committee is delighted to confirm our accommodation is at Kings

College, Golf Ave, Otahuhu, Auckland. This is a beautiful boarding school, with

some buildings looking something reminiscent of Hogwarts from Harry Potter!.

    Competitions

The National Youth Competitions sponsored by Laerdal on Saturday 27 April are

being held at Eden Park, Reimers Ave, Kingsland, Auckland. This is the same place

where the Rugby World Cup was won by the All Blacks in 2011.

We want to thank Eden Park for generously supporting the National Youth Festival.

The drill and communication tests on Friday 26 April will be held at the North Shore

Events Centre. You may know the centre as the home of the Skycity NZ Breakers.

    Sightseeing

There will be plenty of opportunities to see Auckland while youre at the festival. We

will spend time in Auckland City (the CBD), youll see Aucklands waterfront, and

well even visit one of New Zealands largest shopping malls.

    Rainbows End

Thats right, we are heading to Rainbows End after prize giving on Saturday night!

New Zealands largest theme park promises all the thrills you can handle with a hostof fun activities and world class rides. There is something for everyone; spin

vertically and horizontally, suspended 18m high on the Power Surge, be trapped in a

runaway mine cart and Fear Fall 18 storeys at 82km/hr! Defy gravity on New

Zealands only corkscrew roller coaster or ride the Log Flume with its dramatic water

    chute plunge.
