New Address and P.O. Box: By the time you read this we will already be
moved! The new address for the Extension Office is Ohio State University Exten-
sion--Cuyahoga County, 12200 Fairhill Road, E Building, Cleveland, OH 44120.
The building is known as Fairhill Partners and it started out as a Marine Hospital.
Our office is in the annex that is closest to the street and there is plenty of parking
near our entrance. Phone numbers remain the same. Because of the move we’ve
arranged to rent a new P.O. Box closer to the new building. We should use this
new P.O. Box number on our materials where appropriate. Here is the new ad-
dress: P.O. Box 20268, Cleveland, OH 44120.
From Garden to Table and More Get your reservation in for this very popular
event! It will be held on April 21st in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Check your email for a flyer from Shoshana Wodzisz, Committee Chair. You can register by clicking this link: http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07eeytm7h573840c54&llr=asphx9zab
Your VMS Profile I would like to encourage everyone to periodically check
their profile on the Volunteer Management System. You access the Volunteer Man-
agement System by logging in to https://ohio.volunteersystem.org. After logging in
you can view your profile by clicking “Editing Profile” under “Your Information” on the
left hand side of the home page. Here you can check and update all of your contact
information. You can also upload a picture of yourself if there is none or change it.
I find it is very helpful to check out pictures on the VMS to help identify someone
whose name is not familiar.
Breakfast Gardening Series There are one session left of the series for this
year. They are again being offered at the Independence Library and seem to be
reaching a new audience in the community.

at 16 libraries this year between now and the end of April, is “How to Keep the Un-

At the January 29th Advisory meeting Chair, Jo deHaseth, announced that Cuyahoga County has been awarded
the State Convention location for 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity for Cuyahoga County to showcase the
work that we do in our county to all Master Gardener’s throughout the state of Ohio. We will be putting together
an exploratory committee to begin working on selecting a date in the fall of 2020, selecting a venue and begin
work on gathering speakers.
A few of you have already indicated your interest & I’m still looking for a few more Master Gardeners. If you are
interested in being part of this exploratory committee, please email me, Kathy DeJohn, at [email protected].
There will be plenty of volunteering opportunities in planning this event as well as working the event. Also, make
note that in 2020 there will be no Fall Seminar held in Cuyahoga County. Please be in touch by April 23, 2018 so
our planning can begin.
We have a second vacancy on the Advisory Committee and are hoping to fill them both at the next regular meet-
ing of the Advisory Committee which will be held on Monday, April 23rd. Both positions are for terms that end
December 31, 2019. The new AC members will then be eligible to run for one subsequent 3-year term. The Ad-
visory Committee meets five times per year - our remaining meeting dates for 2018 are: April 23rd, June 18th,
August 20th and November 5th. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions or if you have any
questions about the Advisory Committee, please email or call Jo deHaseth or Kathy DeJohn as soon as possible,
and provide some information, such as the volunteer activities you have been doing or any committees you have
served on. Jo deHaseth [email protected] (216) 702-3908; Kathy DeJohn [email protected]
440-725-2700)
The next Advisory Committee meeting will be held on April 23, 2018 at the Independence library at 4:30 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend, please email me if you’re planning to be there.

The Goodell Lab at OSU is looking for volunteer naturalists who are able to identify bumble bees to species to help collect data on nest-hunting and foraging queen bumble bees this spring (April - June). This is part of a 2017-2018 statewide Ohio bumble bee survey funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The primary goal is to deter-mine the current distribution of the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee and the yellow-banded bumble bee, a spe-cies of concern.
Volunteers in Ohio will collect data and report on:
(1) information on nest-hunting bumble bee queens
(2) timed 15-min observations of patches of flowers where queens forage
Find details and data collection forms here.
To participate, contact Jessie Lanterman at [email protected].

Academic & Professional Background
Bertone-Johnson received a B.S. from Tufts University, where he majored in geological sciences and environmental
studies. He received an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1998. After five years of teaching earth sci-
ence, environmental science and a wilderness survival course at Amherst Regional High School in Amherst, Massachusetts,
Reid went back to graduate school to earn an M.L.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has worked profession-
ally for Dodson Associates, a landscape architecture and planning firm in Ashfield, Massachusetts, and for the Library of Ameri-
can Landscape History.
Presentation Topic: Mill River Greenway Initiative
Given Cleveland’s common waterways along public landscape themes, Mr. Bertone-Johnson will focus his afternoon
talk on his work with the Mill River Greenway Initiative. Mill River flows through Smith’s campus and iconic Paradise Pond is
the result of water backing up behind a dam that in some form or another has been there since the mid-1700s. Smith students
recreate on Paradise Pond, study its ecosystems, and generally appreciate Smith’s waterfront landscape as integral to the Smith
experience. Faculty in Geology and Biology conduct research on the hydrology and vegetation, and the architecture and land-
scape studies programs use this unique resource as both site and inspiration for design projects. Smith’s campus is laboratory for
learning, and the Mill River is a highly prized and valued component of the campus landscape.
Landscape Studies Studio Program
Since arriving at Smith, Reid Bertone-Johnson has expanded the landscape studies studio program and integrated the
work of his studio classes into projects important to both Smith College and the City of Northampton. He develops studio pro-
jects for his students that take advantage of his own expertise in sustainable landscape design, broad-scale landscape design,
regional planning, and the interpretation and preservation of historic landscapes. His students generate creative solutions to com-
plex problems for actual clients including the Ward 3 Neighborhood Association and the Mill River Greenway Initiative, both in
Northampton.
Ada & Archibald MacLeish Field Station
In the fall of 2008, Bertone-Johnson led his landscape design studio to develop a master plan and system of interpretive
trails for the Ada & Archibald MacLeish Field Station, a 240-acre patchwork of forest and farmland located in West Whately,
MA that provides opportunities for faculty and students to pursue environmental research, outdoor education, and low-impact
recreation. As manager of the Ada & Archibald MacLeish Field Station, he combines both his professional and academic inter-

Summit Metro parks has developed a series of "Native" plant programs throughout the summer of
2018. It is our hope that we can partner with the Master Gardener's program in the southeastern
parts of Cuyahoga and the southwestern parts of Geauga counties respectively to provide quality edu-
cational programs for your Master Gardeners. These programs could potentially count toward CEU'S for
your MG's. We are excited to partner with you in this new opportunity. If this is of interest to your mem-
bers and meets your standards for CEU'S, it is our wish that you email the flyer to your current Master
Gardener's alerting them of this educational opportunity. If at any time you or a representative want to
discuss the MG program at one of the session, we would gladly provide time for you to do so.
