August 2015 Dear Friends: When we make the commitment to volunteer, we are doing so much more than helping a few people or a single community – we are improving our whole city. Civic engagement is essential to the future success of the five boroughs, and through NYC Service, we are harnessing the tremendous power of our people and tackling some of our greatest challenges. We are grateful for the dedicated volunteers who lend their time and talents to address the needs of their neighbors and support the organizations that are making a difference in the lives of countless New Yorkers. To recognize these generous individuals and celebrate the progress they have helped bring to our city, we are pleased to introduce the first NYC Volunteers Count report. This document shines a spotlight on the more than 400,000 people who volunteered their time last year to assist those in need and the diverse organizations and City agencies that enabled them to do so. And thanks to the nearly 461,000 public school students who participated in volunteer programs last school year, the report also points to a future in which even more of our residents will commit to giving back to their communities. Every New Yorker has something to give, and by working together, we are a stronger, more resilient city. We encourage all our residents to visit nyc.gov/service to discover new ways in which they can improve their neighborhoods and help build a brighter tomorrow. Sincerely, Bill de Blasio Paula Gavin Mayor Chief Service Officer

The NYC Volunteers Count 2014 report is NYC Service’s first inventory of the volunteers who are helping a range of organizations and City agencies address New York City’s greatest needs. As detailed in this publication, 180 New York City organizations and City agencies reported that a total of 403,724 people volunteered throughout 2014. The NYC Department of Education also reported that 460,667 students volunteered during the 2014-2015 school year.

We know that New York City has a robust spirit of service and strong sense of community, but the City’s adult volunteer rate in 2013 was 18%, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, compared with the national average of 25%.

The NYC Volunteers Count report gives NYC Service a deeper look at who is volunteering in New York City and a baseline to compare the numbers

of volunteers in 2015, 2016, and beyond. These measures also provide an opportunity for NYC Service to recognize the important contribution that volunteers make to organizations throughout the City – and to more effectively engage people in volunteering efforts. We anticipate that the numbers that we report in the future will grow, as more organizations and agencies participate in the count and more New Yorkers volunteer.

With the publication of this report, NYC Service is taking another step toward achieving one of its key goals, to measure volunteer outcomes and impact. NYC Service inspires and empowers all New Yorkers to volunteer and serve in New York City and each other.
