About NX CAM

NXTM CAM software has helped many of the world’s leading manufacturers and job shops produce better

parts faster. You can also achieve similar benefits by making use of the unique advantages NX CAM

offers.

This is one of many hands-on demonstrations designed to introduce you to the powerful capabilities in

NX CAM 10.0.3. In order to run this demonstration, you will need access to NX CAM 10.0.3.

Visit the NX Manufacturing Forum to learn more, ask questions, and share comments about NX CAM.

Hands-on Demonstration: Back Countersinking

Back Countersinking is a new hole making operation subtype that allows you to machine modeled and non-modeled chamfers on the back side of holes (side opposite where the tool enters). Each chamfer is machined using a single linear motion. This operation requires a supported back countersinking tool.

Prerequisites:

1. You will need access to NX CAM 10.0.3 in order to run this demonstration.

2. If you haven’t done so already, download and unzip back_countersinking.7z.

Demo:

1. Open back_countersinking.prt in NX.

Note: If the part is not translucent as shown below, choose MenuPreferencesVisualization,

click the Visual tab, and select the Translucency check box.

Examine the geometry and hole making operations

You will begin by looking at the geometry groups and operations that drill, bore, and mill the holes

prior to back countersinking.

1. In the Geometry View of the Operation Navigator, select the FG_STEP1HOLE geometry group.

This geometry group contains four recognized holes with modeled chamfers. These holes have

been drilled and bored.

Page 5: NX CAM 10.0.3: Back Countersinking

5

2. Select the FG_STEP1HOLE_1 geometry group.

This geometry group contains a single recognized hole with a modeled chamfer that requires a

larger tool. This hole has been milled.

Create a back countersinking operation for the small holes containing

recognized feature geometry

You will begin by creating a back countersinking operation for the four small holes on the top of the

part in the FG_STEP1HOLE feature group.

1. Click Create Operation.

2. Select hole_making from the Type list.

3. Select Back Countersinking .

4. Specify the following:

Program: PROGRAM

Tool: BACK_COUNTERSINK_15.5

Geometry: FG_STEP1HOLE

Method: HOLE_MILL_METHOD

5. Click OK.

6. Click Display next to Specify Feature Geometry.

Page 6: NX CAM 10.0.3: Back Countersinking

6

7. In the Tool section of the dialog box, click Edit/Display .

8. Select the More Tab.

9. Expand the Tracking section of the dialog box.

10. Click Tracking Points .

The tool contains three system-defined tracking points.

Note: Drive Point and Tracking Data options must be customized into the operation dialog box.

11. Click Cancel twice to return to the operation dialog box.

12. Click Generate .

13. Click Verify .

14. Select the Replay tab.

15. Slow down the Animation Speed to 7 and click Play .

7

On the approach, NX positions the tool centerline over the hole centerline in non-spinning mode (1), then shifts the tool off-center by the calculated amount (2).

1

2

The neck on the back of the countersinking tool is offset from the centerline of the shank. The tool

selected for the operation must have a Minimum Hole Diameter (MHD) that is less than the hole

diameter.

Note: The necessary minimum shift distance is calculated automatically using (D-MHD)/2. You may override this value by specifying a Nodrag Clearance in the Cycle Parameters dialog box. The Nodrag Clearance defines the distance between the insert and the wall of the hole.

8

After engaging into the hole (3), NX shifts the tool to the hole centerline (4), switches to spinning mode and cuts the chamfer with a backwards motion (5).

3

4

5

After completing the cut, NX reverses the procedure to retract out of the hole.

The operation determines the in-process feature volume.

16. Select the 3D Dynamic tab.

17. Click Play .

18. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

19. Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a back countersinking operation for the large hole containing

recognized feature geometry

You will create a back countersinking operation for the large hole on the side of the part in the

FG_STEP1HOLE feature group using a bigger tool.

1. Click Create Operation.

2. Specify the following:

Program: PROGRAM

Tool: BACK_COUNTERSINK_55

Geometry: FG_STEP1HOLE_1

Method: HOLE_MILL_METHOD

3. Click OK.

4. Click Display next to Specify Feature Geometry.

5. Click Generate .

6. Click Verify .

7. Select the Replay tab.

8. Change the view orientation to Top and click Step twice.

Notice that the automatically calculated shift distance is fairly large.

Page 10: NX CAM 10.0.3: Back Countersinking

10

You will specify a Nodrag Clearance to reduce this distance.

9. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

10. Click Edit Cycle .

11. Select the Nodrag Clearance Status check box.

12. Type 1.0000 in the Nodrag Clearance box.

13. Click OK in the Cycle Parameters dialog box.

14. Click Generate .

15. Click Verify and click Step twice.

Notice that the distance between the insert and the wall of the hole has been reduced, resulting

in less wasted tool movement.

16. Click Play .

17. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

18. Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a back countersinking operation for a non-modeled chamfer

You will create a back countersinking operation for the small hole on top of the part that does not

have a modeled chamfer.

1. Click Create Operation.

2. Specify the following:

Program: PROGRAM

Tool: BACK_COUNTERSINK_15.5

Geometry: MCS_TOP

Method: HOLE_MILL_METHOD

3. Click OK.

4. Click Specify Feature Geometry .

5. Change the view orientation to Isometric.

Page 11: NX CAM 10.0.3: Back Countersinking

11

6. Select the face of the hole.

7. Click OK.

8. Click Generate .

9. Click Verify .

10. Click Play .

11. Select the 3D Dynamic tab.

12. Click Play .

Page 12: NX CAM 10.0.3: Back Countersinking

12

13. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

14. Click OK to complete the operation.

15. Close the part without saving.
