J36 Early Spring Show & Sale of Store Cattle Thursday 19th March

NWA J36 held it’s early spring show of store cattle which saw Mr Robert Mason of Preston judging, who had a good entry of cattle before him in the show classes. The championship rosette was awarded to N A & J Temple, showing a BrB bullock, which later sold for £1070.

Reserve champion was a Lim x bullock from J G & P H Thompson, which achieved £1145

An entry of 63 OTM Cattle forward sold to an overall average of 118ppk. The OTM trade continue to be every bit as dear at Lancaster with vendors and poten-tial vendors strongly advised not to pass Lancaster with a strong crowd of buyers around the ring. Cull cows sold to a top price of 169ppk or £1354 for a five year old British Blue cow from Philip Halhead on behalf of Norbreck Genetics. Well fleshed beef cows sold between the mid and late 140ppk. Black and White cows topped at 141.5ppk from Gary Atkinson of Cantsfield with other fleshed cows in the 130’s pence per kilo. Black and whites sold to an overall average of 109ppk.

A plainer entry of Store Cattle forward in the market with more Holstein steers and a lot of dairy bred cattle. As seen in many store cattle markets up and down the country this week the trade has slightly eased with many finishers slightly cautious over the recent drop in prime cattle although long keep suckler bred cattle sold to a strong trade with people beginning to look for summering cattle. Trade topped at £1350 for Angus steers from SJ Brass of Ingleton with Limou-sin steers selling to £1330 from BN Greenwood. Heifers sold to a top price of £1290 for a 23 month old Limousin from RA Caton of Low House.

A disappointing entry of Calves and Stirks at Lancaster with buyers leaving short of requirements. Top price came from David & Eileen Wallbank with an Angus Bull selling to £305. Stirks to £510 for Angus Heifers from B Webber, Wigan. Many more calves needed to meet buyers requirements.

Monday 23rd March Monday 23rd March Monday 23rd March Monday 23rd March A larger entry of Prime Hoggs forward this week sold to continue strong trade, SQQ hoggs averaged 199ppk with an overall average of 196ppk. A lot of heavy hoggs in the market lead to the average being slightly easier than the previous week. Prime hoggs sold to a top of 226ppk for Texels from WM Pye of Tarnwater with standard weight continental hoggs selling easily over the 200ppk mark. Heavy weight hoggs in the early to mid-fifty kilograms sold to the late nineties. Mule hoggs sold to a top of 205ppk with all mules forward averaging 192ppk. More horned lambs in the market today saw Scottish Black faces achieve 206ppk or £86.50 with all horned lambs forward averaging 191ppk.

The Cast Sheep trade continues to be every bit of good with all buyers keen to buy sheep today. Buyers continue to be cautious on over fat sheep but fit sheep are eagerly sought after. Charollais tups from Peter Anderton of Wyre Farm sold to £148. Good continental ewe easily sold over £110 topping at £134 for a couple of Texels from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck. Big mule ewes sold well into the nineties topping at £99 from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands.

An overall average of £92.05 for all cast sheep.

A mixed entry of Prime Bulls topped at 184.5ppk for Limousin bulls from J A Airey of Old Croft with others from the same home selling to 177.5ppk. Dairy bred beef bulls saw Limousins sell to 174.5ppk from A & FM Bolland & Sons of Yeat House.

The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw an entry of 192 forward this week. Once

again at Lancaster a buoyant trade throughout with buyers around the ring for all ages and

types of sheep and lambs. Majority of the entry forward was older ewes. The trade topped at

£212 for four crop continental ewes suckling ¾ Texel lambs from JT & B Fox of Blackwood

End with ewes and single lambs from the same home selling to £190. A large proportion of

today’s entry was old mule ewes which sold to a top of £192 from TM Townley of Knowsley

Farm sucking young Texel twin lambs as others depending on the lambs sold regularly

around the £180 mark. Sheep and lambs sold to an average of £64 per head with very few

singles forward today.

Continental cows once again met a very strong trade, topping at 194.5p/kg for Limousin x from G H Jones of Far Sawrey and to £1150, again for a Limousin cow from W G Wilkinson of Coniston. A much plainer show of black and white cows about, but with well fleshed cattle still selling well to 124.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son of Milnthorpe and also from R A & E Edmondson of Levens, both purchased by Dawn Cumbria. Overall cows averaged 116.53p/kg

The weekly sale of Calves had a reduced entry of 29 with many farmers busy lambing and many not calving at the moment. Beef calves sold away nicely, topping at £450 from RJ & KR Wilkinson of High Foulshaw, for British Blue bulls. Others selling to £360 from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm. Heifer calves sold to a top of £390 from E Tuer of Common Farm, with a Simmental heifer at two months old. Younger Limousin heifers topped at £340 from Brian Wilson of Spout House. Black and White weaned calves sold to £185 from RA & E Edmondson of High Barnes with rearing calves selling to £95 from TK Robinson & Sons of Greaves Farm. Others to £88. All Black and whites averaged £69.

Only a handful of Stirks forward, selling to a top of £500 for an Angus steer from RG Robinson of Ellers Farm. Three to Four month old British Friesian bulls from Messrs Williamson of Colby sold to £340 and £310.

The Spring Sale of Poultry and Waterfowl at J36 Rural Auction Centre saw a packed ringside of buyers. The sale commenced with deadstock and equipment which saw a large hen cabin from Dan Shepherd of Gaskell House sell to £192. A smaller garden coop sold to £55 from P Boustead.

Hatching Eggs sold to a top of £22 for 8 Sebastopol Geese again from P Boustead. Large fowl eggs sold to £17 for a dozen Araucana from L Beck. Others saw half a dozen Rhode Island Reds realise £14 from Messers Staveley.

Large fowl saw the best trade of the day with prices achieved above and beyond vendor’s expectations. Topping the day was a fantastic trio of Welsummers from Lewis Chorley selling for a final call of £110. Closely following this was two Buff Orpington Pullets from Ted Longton, achieving £100. Classic garden chickens were in the strongest demand with a set of 3 Welsummer pullets realising £70 from E Parker, 3 Light Sussex Pullets to £50 from Joe Gorst and 3 Rhode Island Red Pullets to £45. Bantams sold to £50 for Three Light Sussex Pullets from Brian Preston.

Ducks sold to a top of £68 for a breeding pair of Carolinas from S Danson and £55 for three nice Aylesburys from J I Allonby.

Geese sold to a top of £60 for a trio of Buff Backs from C Oversby.

Tuesday 24th March Tuesday 24th March Tuesday 24th March Tuesday 24th March North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime sheep at J36 on Tuesday where an entry of 1250 prime hoggs and cast sheep were sold.

A lot more Prime Hoggs have hit the markets nationally and trade would be a little easier on the week especially for the heavy weight hoggs and there was a large proportion in that category forward today. Hoggs topped at £96 per head for Suffolks from Mr G Riley of Bolton-le-Sands and a top price per kilo of 204p/kg for a pen of Cheviot hoggs from JC Dunning of Orton which were purchased by Riley Bros., of Dunnockshaw.

Considering there was a very mixed show of hoggs and a lot of heavy hoggs forward we still achieved an average of 185.72p/kg.

Mule ewes peaked at £118 for a pen full from TL & S Cross of Westhouse and Horned sheep sold to £96 for Rough Fell ewes from GA & JA Allan and SL Hoggarth both of Howgill.
