editors’It’s party time! Birthdays and birthday parties are such a special time for kiddos. Regardless of the endless wish list for presents, the mayhem of party planning (and sometimes the party itself ), kids

look forward to celebrating their special day all year long. And why shouldn’t they? It’s all about them!

Do you organize your kids’ parties’ months ahead? Maybe you’re less of a planner and need to figure out how to celebrate in a pinch. Every year we compile the best of what Portland has to offer in the way of parties—some standbys and some new, to help you plan an unforgettable party. In this year’s guide we focus on parties for all seasons. This is Portland after all, and while summer birthdays can often be celebrated outside, planning an outdoor party throughout the year is next to impossible. Does your kid love donuts? Have you had the donut “cake” request? Or maybe your ‘tween wants to go to a donut shop for their party of only a few. Don’t miss our roundup of local shops for all your donut party needs. This month in Found Around Town we’re encouraging kids to make or give art as presents. And with all the talented artists (like one of our all time favorite illustrators, Emily Winfield Martin, whose sweet illustration graces our cover), crafters and d-i-y-ers in Ptown, it seems like the perfect compliment to mark that oh-so special occasion or milestone birthday.

There are so many awesome places to party in Portland, we couldn’t possibly make it through our list unless we continued celebrating our kids’ birthdays at children’s venues well into their 40s. Do you have a favorite spot? If so, we’d love to hear from you! Until then, we wish you the best birthday party ever; one full of laughter, sweet smiles and ice cream mustaches.

Cheers,

Kelley & Beth

Now We are Six

When I was one, I had just begun.

When I was two, I was nearly new.

When I was three, I was hardly me.

When I was four, I was not much more.

When I was five, I was just alive.

But now I’m six, and clever as clever.

So I think I’ll be six, forever and ever.

- A.A. Milne

Wouldn’t we all love to invite 20 munchkins over to run around at the park and eat hot dogs and birthday cake? Nine months out of the year our unpredictable weather makes that a risky option, so an indoor party it is. If you’ve sworn not to return to that party place with the mind-numbing arcade noise, crowds and games that are way beyond your 3-year-old’s reach, fear no more. There are plenty of amazing party options out there for all seasons, budgets and age groups.

Fall is such a magical time: kettle corn, candy apples, roasted nuts and hot cider all bring us back to our childhood. So why not celebrate your tot’s birthday at one of the lo-cal pumpkin patches? Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm rents out their green-house for party space and gives little party-go-ers the run of the place. The $7 kids’ birthday pass includes access to their play teepee, farm animals, pumpkin flinging device, hay mazes,

hayride, three big slides, rubber duckie rac-ing, pumpkin bowling and a pumpkin to take home. Greenhouses are $50 for two hours with space for 25 people, and reservations for weekends in the fall go fast. Don’t forget the rubber boots! plumperpumpkins.com

Other ideas: Go for a birthday hike at Tryon Creek State Natural Area (tryonfriends.org) or the Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation’s Nature Park Interpretive Center (thprd.org). Keep busy finding bugs, making leaf prints and stomping in puddles.

By winter, most of us feel like curling up in a ball and hibernating. Everyone except the kidlets, that is. Cure their cabin fever with an activity-based indoor birthday party at any of Portland Parks & Recreation’s community centers. For instance: Mt. Scott Community Center offers a pool party

for up to 35 people for $140, which includes their fantastic slide, current channel, vortex and interactive play structure. There’s also a two-hour roller rink rental for up to 30 skaters for $132. Packages include an hour in their party room, a balloon bouquet, Happy Birthday signs, covered tables, admission to the pool and a party helper to set up and clean up. Turn on the reggae music and bring on the tropical punch! Portland Parks’ 11 community centers and six indoor pools each have their own rates and themes, everything from princess parties and sports to messy art, dance and game room parties. Call each directly to schedule. portlandoregon.gov/parks/article/430541

Other ideas: Older kids can get the lead out with a rock-climbing party at the Portland Rock Gym (portlandrockgym.com) or The Circuit Gym (thecircuitgym.com), both of which offer supervised climbing with trained staff.

Once springtime rolls around, we’re all itching to play outside, until the downpour starts up again. One local spot that provides the perfect indoor/outdoor mix is a hidden gem, literally. If you haven’t been to the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals (ricenorthwestmuseum.org) in Hillsboro, it’s worth the trek. Situated on lush, tree-lined grounds off Highway 26, the quaint little building is deceptively huge, with cavernous displays of fossils, crystals, gems, meteorites, agates, thunder eggs, fluorescent rocks and even the oldest rock in the world.

Birthday packages include a guided tour through the museum, table and chair set-up and cleanup, and a free rock from the rock pile outside. Depending on the weather (you can decide at the last minute), choose from an indoor/outdoor scavenger hunt, nature hunt or treasure hunt ($10.50 per participant, includes a $3 coupon for the gift store). For an extra $3 per child (in place of goody bags, perhaps), add one of two craft activities to be led by your party host: a rock person sculpture or a pebble collage. Rock hounds, nature lovers and parents alike are guaranteed to be thrilled.

Other ideas: Celebrate the spring bounty at Kruger’s Farm Market (krugersfarmmarket.com), which is open mid-April through October. Party packages include an outdoor picnic area, tractor-driven hay ride to the U-pick fields, and a pint of fruit for each child to take home. Bella organic Farm (bellaorganic.com), also on Sauvie Island, offers a similar package. The farm was recently named the first in the Portland metro area to run 100 percent on solar energy. Now that’s something to celebrate.

little you by Richard Van Camp (Board Book $9.95)

“You are mighty. You are small. You are

ours, after all…” Sure to become a bedtime favorite, this tender, imaginative poem by Richard Van Camp, reminds even the small-est readers that they are special and adored. Crisp, expressive illustrations by Julie Flett offer the perfect compliment to this beauti-fully modern board book, full of everyday scenes of a family’s love. Little You makes a wonderful gift for both parents and their little ones.

the Day the CrayonS quit by Drew Daywalt (Hardback $17.99)

Duncan’s crayons have demands. Lots of them.

Red crayon is tired of working holidays. Black would like to do more than just out-line things. White is having an existential crisis. Yellow and Orange have come to blows over who gets to be the color of the sun. Duncan had no idea that his crayons could quit! Or write him letters, for that matter. This hilarious new picture book by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by the incred-ible Oliver Jeffers would make a superb gift for any young artist. Readers will never look at their crayons the same way ever again.
