our storyBuilding on four decades of delivering youth leadership and direct learning experiences

Nestled in the Cheakamus River Valley and surrounded by temperate rainforest, the Outdoor School is the natural place to learn, connecting British Columbians to their environment through experiential education. Situated on 420 acres of ecological reserve land, just minutes from the Sea to Sky highway, the Outdoor School is unique

among a handful of environmental learning centres in Canada. Learning takes place daily in nature’s classroom amongst 1,000 year-old red cedars and a vast network of spawning channels - all under the watchful eyes of wintering Bald Eagles.

our projectPhase One: The North Shore Credit Union Environmental Learning Centre (ELC)

our goalTo raise $3.8 million for the completion of the Environmental Learning Centre

Through partnerships, financial and in-kind contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals, we can meet our goal and continue to provide lasting learning experiences for thousands of British Columbians every year.

• Wetland Restoration & Landscaping – Wetland restoration, paths & walkways, native plantings

• Art & Education – Classroom & meeting spaces, art & education displays, educational boardwalk

• Sustainable Building Supplies & Equipment – Sustainable wall and ceiling panels, kitchen equipment & furniture

• Sustainable Systems & Clean Energy –Waste-water treatment, solar water heating, geothermal heating, solar panels

Your donations are made to the Pacific Foundation for Environmental Learning, a registered charity (#82655 1293 RR0001) recently created to provide support for the Outdoor School’s campus renewal projects and to establish an endowment for on-going programs and operations.

We accept and appreciate any amount donated. Tax receipts for donations will be issued, and we will work with donors to direct funds and provide appropriate recognition. For donating online, please visit: www.nvos.ca

Building on four decades of delivering youth leadership and direct learning experiences

Our multi-day programs reach 6,000 adults and 5,000 students every year. Using the cultural and natural environment as a context, participants engage in First Nations cultural immersion at the S k w ’ u n e - w a s Bighouse, and first-hand learning experiences at the salmon hatchery and working farm.

In the spirit of initiating change, the Outdoor School was recently awarded $1 million from the North Shore Credit Union Legacy Fund. The School District of North Vancouver

has pledged $1 million in matching funds.

I will hopefully always remember “if we look after the forest, the forest will look after us” – Kerri

“The awe and wonder I felt as a student at the Big House was passed on to my students in Nunavut, and I recaptured my own sense of awe while learning from the children and elders in Northern communities.” Analise Saely, Outdoor School Alumni

Sustainable Farm

Established in 1969, the Outdoor School is now poised to become an International Centre of Excellence for environmental leadership and sustainability.

A sustainable campus renewal is underway, with the vibrant new Environmental Learning Centre (ELC) at the heart. For the Outdoor School this is a critical time - our aging infrastructure is badly in need of replacement. With no direct funding from the B.C. Ministry of Education, we need your help now to preserve and revitalize this provincial treasure. With your generous support, the Outdoor School will

b e c o m e a hub of discovery for learners of all ages, building on a 40-year legacy of connecting people, nature and community through education.

Dave Marshall Salmon Reserve

The ELC is the gateway to a renewed Outdoor School. This natural learning space will welcome and engage visitors of all ages, becoming a leading demonstration facility and educational tool for sustainable living. It will offer a nature gallery, multi-purpose,learning spaces, a dining

hall, and meeting facilities.

Already winning awards for environmental design, the ELC will be a LEED Platinum certified building. We are working towards the highest sustainability goals including:

• Generating on site energy to achieve net zero energy use• Reducing carbon emissions to zero• Reducing water use through recycling and efficient fixtures• Using local, sustainably produced food
