OXLEY NVIS FILTERSOxley Group has long been accepted as a world leader in the modification of aircraft cockpits for use with Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS). Through this experience the team has developed a strong capability for the design and production of a wide catalogue of NVIS filters to suit various applications. This includes a host of internal and external applications for aircraft, vehicles, ships and other defence and civil equipment. Many customers across the globe including OEMs and integrators utilise Oxley optical filters.

PLATFORMSAlthough solutions were originally developed for NVIS compatible aircraft cockpits, Oxley has also designed filters for external lighting on NVIS friendly aircraft and both internal and external lighting components on warships and military vehiclesPlatforms upgraded by Oxley include:

HELICOPTERS

• Mi2, Mi8, Mi17, Mi24• Alouette III• AS365 Dauphin• Bell 205, 206, 212, 412• Blackhawk• Chinook CH47• EA-6B• EH101• Sea King• Puma & SuperPuma• Lynx Mk3 & Mk8• Sikorsky S-76, S-92, H-92• UH-1N

DESIGNOxley has made significant investment in market leading equipment and has developed processes which allow the measurement and characterisation of any lighting component. This allows platform equipment to be computer modelled to select or design a filter which will meet any NVIS blocking requirement, including:

• Lighting component characterisation• Large filter material database• Custom filter modelling software• World leading test and characterisation equipment• NVG goggle test capability

FIXED WING• Jaguar• Tornado• C130• Gripen• F5, F14, F15, F16, F18, F111

WARSHIPS • HMS Illustrious

MILITARY STANDARD FILTERSModifying equipment for NVIS use can be a very difficult task for those not familiar with the technology. Oxley has years of experience in dealing with the various NVIS specifications including:

• MIL-STD-3009 / MIL-L-85762A• UK RAE Working Paper No 6• RTCA DO-275

The Oxley team can also recommend solutions for non-standard requirements and adapt solutions which theoretically meet these specs but are not suitable for a particular application or situation.MIL-STD-3009 is the most commonly used NVIS specification, Oxley has a wealth of experience in working to this standard and supplies filters for every listed lighting component:

• Illuminated controls• Master caution and warning• Map, utility and inspection lighting• Compartment lighting• Electronic and electro-optical displays (monochromatic or full colour)

Filters are available to cover all listed NVG filter types (minus blue)• Class A• Class B• Class C• I3W

All listed NVG colours are available• NVIS/NVG White• NVIS Green A• NVIS Green B• NVIS Yellow• NVIS Red

FILTER TYPESIn order to ensure that NVIS blocking requirements are met, a filter must be tailored to suit the light source with which it will be used. Oxley can recommend or design an NVIS filter for any light source, including:

• Incandescent• LED• CRT• AMLCD• CCFL• VFD

Oxley NVIS filters are available in glass and plastic. The selection of the most appropriate material depends on the application and Oxley engineers are available to assist with the correct selection.Any of our standard finishes or coatings can be applied to the NVIS filter range. These include;

• Anti-reflection coatings• EMI shield coatings (ITO) or mesh• Diffusion• Environmental protection coatings

Some filters in the range have these as standard, other finishes may be available on request.

QUALIFICATION AND TESTINGOxley optical filters are proven in service and are developed to last the full life of the application.Designed to withstand harsh environments, filters are subjected to strict environmental testing including humidity, temperature cycling, salt, fog and vibration. They are inspected to the minimum cosmetic appearance standard of MIL-0-13830 60/40 scratch dig or the relevant assessment criteria for the application.

HOW TO ORDERDue to the complexity of NVIS filtering, filters are specified on an individual enquiry basis by our design engineers to ensure the optimum solution is provided. Please contact our sales team to discuss your requirements; they will require the following information:

• Equipment type, part number and ideally the type of light source to be filtered• The class of NVG to be used in the final application e.g. class A, B or C• Approximate sizing information e.g. any size or thickness restrictions
