Mowing – Pre Planting
• Timing – Insist on doing it in the fall.• By Who – Tractor, mower, time.• Equipment – Brush hog, hay mower.• Benefits –
» Better spray penetration.» Leaves very little debris for planters.» Even spring re-growth of grass for post plant tending.
• Downsides» Added cost.

Mowing – Post Planting
• Timing – Insist on doing it in the fall.• By Who – Tractor, mower, time.• Equipment – Brush hog, hay mower.• Benefits –
» Reduced vole predation.» Reduced snow damage.
• Downsides» Added cost.» Mowing mortality.

Boom Spraying
• Timing – Sept. to Oct. of preceding year.
• By Who – Requires an applicator and operator’s license.
• Equipment – Boom sprayer, tractor.
• Benefits > Reduced competition.
» Opportunity to kill things simazine wont.» Removal of heavy thatch allows reduced simazine use.
• Downsides >Increased competition.
» Removal of thatch can release weeds that cannot be controlled by simazine.
» Site may require mowing because of boom spraying.

Band Spraying (Pre - planting)
• Timing > fall of preceding year.
• By Who > Requires a pesticide applicator and Operator license.
• Equipment > Band sprayer, tractor or ATV.
• Benefits > Straight rows.
» Eliminates the need for year 1 spot spraying.» Cheaper than spot spraying.» Allows for future band spraying rather than spot spray.
• Downsides > Sprayed areas are not always apparent in April.
» Requires mowed fields.» Requires (blue) die to mark rows while applying.» Row spacing difficult to maintian.

Planting tomorrow’s forests
Band Spraying (at planting)
• Timing > during planting.
• By Who > Requires a pesticide Applicator and Operators license.
• Equipment > Sprayer equipped planter or tractor/ATV.
• Benefits > Cost effective if sprayer built in.
» 1 step rather than 2 (if sprayer built in).
» Can spray simazine overtop of the trees.
• Downsides> Simazine is not always consistent.
» Simazine can harm some species (tamarack and others).
» Potential risk to planter via exposure on built in sprayers.

Simazine Application Rates
• Kg/ha or l/ha?
• Bare ground vs. established thatch.
• Weeds you cant kill.
• Trees you can kill.
• Groundwater issues.
![Page 17: nvca tending](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042701/559e012f1a28ab156a8b4598/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Band Spraying (Post planting)
• Timing > late Sept to November after planting.
• By Who > Requires a pesticide Applicator and Operators license.
• Equipment > tractor/ATV, band sprayer.
• Benefits > Very cost effective.
» Excellent way to clean up rows after spring simazine.
» Will reduce the volume of simazine required the next spring.
• Downsides> Weather is always against you.
» Must wait until trees dormant.
» Cannot overspray Cw.
![Page 18: nvca tending](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042701/559e012f1a28ab156a8b4598/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

Plough and Double Disking
• Timing > Fall of preceding year (insist on it).
• By Who > Anyone with equipment.
• Equipment > Tractor, plough, disk.
• Benefits > Loosens/aerates soil compacted by animals or equipment.
» May eliminate need for spray in year 1 and future years.
» May reduce opening of planting slit on heavy soils.
• Downsides > Often not machine plantable.
» Messy- clay soils stick to everything – snowshoes.
» Cover crop required, annual weeds can be a big problem.

Spot Spraying
• Timing> Simazine only – thaw to early May. Tank mix – May.
• By Who> Applicator and Operator’s license.
• Equipment> Back pack sprayer, shield, blue die.
• Benefits> Very versatile. Can go anywhere.
• Downsides> Expensive.» Labour intensive. Shielded spraying much slower.» Simazine needs to be applied early. Tall grass makes it
difficult.» Dense mixed competition requires use of Gylphosate.

I don’t want herbicides
• Walk away. • Larger stock on light competition. • Scalpers on machine planters.
• Cover crops on worked land.• Mulches, tubes.
