Can you believe there are less than 3 weeks until Christmas? This past Saturday, the Children’s Library in Richards Landing hosted its annual Christmas party with over 30 children attending the event. Both Librarian Me-gan Parr and Anne Good were thrilled with the turnout, even if their hands were full. Fortunately, we were able to stop by early before the party started to get some infor-mation about the event. While Megan has been a main-stay at the library for some time, Anne is a new hire, only starting about a month ago. The kids already seem to be taken with her and she’s enjoying her time there.

This year’s party theme was The Nutcracker. With the popular ballet being remade to yet another version of the movie, now was a good time to feature one of librarian Megan’s favorite holiday traditions. She certainly seemed to enjoy reading passages of the book as the children attentively listened. Prior to the party, the library was very nicely decorated

for the festive season. Even the snowy owl was into the spirit of things.

snowball bowling, and some arts and crafts projects also nutcracker themed. Ballerinas were by far the most popular choice for the craft, but some also made nutcrackers. Megan tells us “the tree was decorated so

fast that I think even the candy cane ornaments hidden around the library were on the tree before the crafts really got underway!”

The Children’s Library is usually a screen free environment, but you may have noticed the big screen in the cover photo. There were plans to show some scenes from the movie, however due to time con-straints they never got a chance to show them. They will be played at the after school program this Thursday. This will give everyone who perhaps has never seen the movie a chance to see it before they go see the latest version.

All in all, it was 2 hours packed of ac-tivities and everyone went home happy. They will have to return to pick up their crafts (and for the afterschool program) since they were still drying at the end of the party. The party itself would not be possible without the St. Joseph Island Lions Club sponsoring the event. Unfor-tunately their seeing eye dog was double booked and not able to make a planned appearance but the Lions Club paid for the snacks for the children. The Children’s Library does not receive funding, so dona-tions and sponsorship is how they pay for events like this. While most of us are eagerly awaiting Christmas, it wouldn’t surprise us if some of the kids in attendance are already looking forward to next year’s Christmas party.

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups pitted, chopped dates1 teaspoon baking soda3/4 cup boiling water1/3 cup butter3/4 cup white sugar2 eggs, beaten1 1/8 cups self-rising flour3/4 cup packed brown sugar1/3 cup butter2/3 cup evaporated milk1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

2. In a small bowl combine the dates and baking soda. Pour enough boiling water over the dates to just cover them.

3. Cream 1/3 cup of butter with the white sugar un-til light. Beat in the eggs and mix well to combine.

4. Add the flour and date mixture (including water) to the egg mixture and fold to combine. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until a tester comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Let cool slightly and prepare the sauce.

6. To Make Caramel Sauce: In a small saucepan combine the brown sugar, 1/3 cup butter, and evaporated milk. Cook over medium heat and bring to boil. Turn heat down and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour the sauce over individual servings of warm cake.

European Starling

As the name implies, they originate in Europe, but did you know they were first brought to North America by Shakespeare enthusiasts in the nineteenth century? The birds were in-tentionally released by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned in his writings. Covered in white spots during winter, they turn dark, glossy and iridescent in summer, and are actually quite stunning to look at, even though they are considered a nuisance. For much of the year, they wheel through the sky and mob lawns in big, noisy flocks. This photo taken in early spring shows just a portion of a very large group.

Starlings are common in towns, suburbs, and countryside near human settlements. Basically everywhere, despite not being native to North America, they inhabit almost the entire conti-nent other then the extreme north and south. Despite originating from a population of just 100, there are now over 200 million of these birds in North America and since they are so new, birds on one side of the continent are genetically the same as those on the other side. The little genetic diversity does not seem to be hindering the species at all. Starlings are strong fliers that can get up to speeds of 48 mph.

They are vocal mimics and can imitate calls of many other species of birds and in some instances, can even mimic human speech (you can find interesting videos of these birds on YouTube).

SPECIAL THANKSDebbie and I have survived our longest time away from our beautiful island in over 50 years !! Everything went amazingly well on the donor and recipient side of the transplant. We would like to thank Stephen for being there to look after us for the first couple of weeks and Breanne , Maddie and Carter for looking after the animals and everything around the house while we were away for the month of October !!! There is not room in Is-land Clippings to name the people we wish and need to thank !! We will thank the Island people in general as almost every island resident has helped in one way or another. The prayers, well wishes, monetary donations, food donations, and tasks performed for us during this time were overwhelming to say the least. You all had a hand in pre surgery and recovery phase that really made the whole experience a lot smoother and easier to get through. This place we call home has the kindest and most considerate people living here than anywhere else in the world !!
