Featuring Christine Matusiak… Christine is our new co-teacher in the Preschool- Kindergarten class. As a trained artist, she’s a bit over- qualified for our crafts, but we’re so glad she’s here! Christine was raised in Media, PA, just outside of Philadelphia. While there, she attended 12 years of Catholic school, graduating from Cardinal O’Hara H.S. in Springfield, PA. (We love having Catholic-trained folks on the Nurture staff because they really know their Bible stories!) Christine then attended University of the Arts in Philly where she majored in Sculpture. At that time, she enjoyed figurative work with wood and metal, but she kept being drawn to fabric. She eventually decided to attend Penland School of Craft where she focused on weaving and its craftsman- ship. After that, Christine earned her 3 rd degree (!), an Associate’s in Professional Crafts from Haywood Com- munity College where she focused on the business/ professional aspects of weaving. Christine generally crafts functional items, like scarves, small bags, informal shawls, and accessories. She even maintains her own garden where she grows flowers like marigolds, cosmos, and indigo plants to create natural dyes for the yarn. Her beautiful final products have been displayed and sold at Mountain Made, Woolworth Walk, and other galleries through- out WNC. And for those of you who remember Blue Moon Bakery, formerly on Biltmore Ave., Christine used to work there, too. Christine spends much of her time home-schooling her 12-year-old son, Frost. She also enjoys attending yoga classes a few times a week and the occasional beach trip. She began teaching in our Preschool-Kind. room just about a month ago. She said, “The kids are awe- some, and I’m enjoying getting to know them. They are great communicators, which makes it fun.” As you can see, Christine is a perfect match for our program, and we’re feeling very fortunate that she found us! Nurture Newsletter October-November 2019 Curriculum News - Via Negativa The Sunday just before the fall equinox (Sept. 22), we moved into Via Negativa. During this Via, we embrace the darkness in our lives and honor the rough times. Our theme for the younger groups (Preschool-Kind. and Lower Elementary) is In the Desert. They will hear the entire Mo- ses saga from baby in a basket to the Israelites wandering in the desert. It’s a great Via Negativa story, full of fear, anger, pride, and lying. We treat all those emotions as a normal part of life as we explore strategies for how to han- dle them when they arise and what we might be able to learn from them. They will also learn about the Jewish hol- idays of Passover and Shavuot (God giving the Torah to the Israelites). Our theme for the Upper Elementary class is Deceiv- ers. They will explore stories from various cultures and faith traditions that involve deception. There are a lot of them! Here’s a sampling: Laban Deceives Jacob Twice (Genesis 29-30) The Stone with Whiskers (Sub-Saharan African) Samson’s 1st Wife and the Riddle (Judges 14:5-20) Samson and Delilah (Judges 16:4-22) Foolish Lion and Clever Rabbit (Hindu/ Panchatantra) A Man Named Wise (Buddhist/Jataka) Judas Betrays Jesus (Matthew 26-27) Interfaith Evening of GratitudeSave the Date!
