Nursing Informatics Defined

Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision- making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology.

Nursing Practice

Nursing Process is the cornerstone of Professional Nursing Practice

• Defines the “What” and “How” of professional practice

• The steps of the process are measurable

• The process steps can also be used by other clinical disciplines

Page 8: Nursing Informatics 101 - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/rdcms-himss/files/production/public...Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information

Nursing Process

Well-documented information provides: • What care has been provided and what is outstanding

• Outcomes of care provided and responses to the plan of care • Current patient status & assessments

• Support decisions based on assessments to drive new plans of care

Page 9: Nursing Informatics 101 - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/rdcms-himss/files/production/public...Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information

Automation of Documentation

COLLECTION

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So we have added steps to support the nursing process and reflect the role of nursing informatics: Standardized documentation Process Re-engineering Information Management Research and Evidence Collection These steps enhance the nursing process, make it more efficient, and result in better and repeatable outcomes. Let’s see how this happens – next slide.
Page 13: Nursing Informatics 101 - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/rdcms-himss/files/production/public...Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information

How do Informatics Nurses Impact the Nursing Process?

• Standardized Documentation

• The collection tool for information management

• Information Management • Key role for Nursing Informatics • Key to research and evidence collection

• Process Re-engineering

• Key to successful implementation

• Research and Evidence Collection • Key to repeatable, standardized care and improved

outcomes

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In addition to making it easier for nursing to move from area to area with minimal adjustment to a data collection tool, standardized documentation allows data to be more easily shared and reported on. Keep in mind the definitions of the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom as defined in Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice document. Data are discrete entities that are described objectively without interpretation Information is data that are interpreted, organized, or structured, and Knowledge is information that is synthesized so that relationships are identified and formalized. Wisdom is the appropriate use of knowledge to manage and solve human problems. (Reference: ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice) Management of the information collected from the standardized documentation is a key role for nursing informatics – pulling data and analyzing to support research. Nursing informatics performs a role in process re-engineering during the planning and implementation of clinical software – how can software/hardware make the flow of information better to support improved patient care. And most importantly, all of this supports the ability to repeat and standardize patient care for consistent, quality outcomes.

Presentation Notes
Presenter 2014-05-06 14:18:51 -------------------------------------------- In alignment with the America Nurses Association (ANA) and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI), this HIMSS Position Statement provides background on key related issues and identifies specific recommendations for eliminating barriers and addressing nursing’s role in transforming healthcare through the use of IT, particularly in regard to the role of nursing informatics. This statement was developed by the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee, representing more than 2,900 nurse informaticists, and is supported by HIMSS multidisciplinary stakeholder membership. The IOM Future of Nursing report has stimulated accelerated efforts among nursing organizations to collaborate and unite on behalf of nursing and future care delivery in the U.S. It is through the collective wisdom, expertise and strategizing of individuals and groups that the recommendations of the Future of Nursing Report will be achieved. HIMSS believes Together, nurses and nursing informatics must lead, and be visible, vocal and present at the table to achieve healthcare delivery transformation. Collaboration and unified messaging among all stakeholders are keys to success. We believe that nurses and nursing informatics specialists are vital to accomplishing the goals described in this position paper and advancing healthcare transformation through the use of health IT.

Presentation Notes
Nurses are key leaders in developing the infrastructure for effective and efficient health information technology that transforms the delivery of care. Nurse informaticists play a crucial role in advocating both for patients and fellow nurses who are often the key stakeholders and recipients of these evolving solutions. Nursing informatics professionals are the liaisons to successful interactions with technology in healthcare. As clinicians who focus on transforming information into knowledge, nurse informaticists cultivate a new time and place of care through their facilitation efforts to integrate technology with patient care. Technology will continue to be a fundamental enabler of future care delivery models and nursing informatics leaders will be essential to transforming nursing practice through technology.
