NURSING PROGRAMS

IVCC offers an Associates degree in Nursing (RN) and a Certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN)

Both programs are limited admission and very competitive. Students who have the minimum requirements for admission are not guaranteed admission

For the Fall of 2016, we are admitting approximately 80 students. The total number of RN and LPN students for Fall 2017 is subject to departmental review. We currently accept approximately 60 RN’s and 20 LPN’s

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTEDThe following documents must be received by the Office of

Admissions and Records prior to the posted deadline:

Official High School Transcripts

Official GED Scores (if applicable)

Official College Transcripts from all institutions attended (IVCC request for evaluation of transcripts form completed)

Placement Test Completion

Certified Nurses Aid (CNA) Proof of Certification or Enrollment in ALH1214 or ALH1215

PROOF OF RESIDENCY Students must provide proof of residency as part of

their file completion

Students should be able to provide one or more of the following: Voter registration in District 513

Evidence of tax, utility or rent receipts in District 513

Driver's license and/or vehicle registration showing an address in District 513

Other documents which can help verify residency in District 513

A student who resides with his or her parents or guardian in Community College District 513 is a resident student.

RESIDENCY Preference is given to those applicants who are legal

residents of IVCC district #513

Due to the competitiveness of the nursing program, we have not been able to admit out-of-district applicants in recent years

Residency is defined as living in IVCC’s district #513 for 30 days prior to submitting your Letter of Intent

Dual admissions agreements do not imply residency for limited admissions programs

If a student works full time in district (30 hours or more per week), they will be considered district residents

SELECTING A PROGRAM

Students will be allowed to apply for both the RN and the LPN programs and indicate a preference

If you are unsure, ask yourself which program you would choose if you were accepted to both!

Students should discuss their options with a Counselor

Students who are licensed LPNs who wish to pursue the RN program should meet with the Director of Nursing

Your counselor will evaluate where you are and provide you with information

to assist you in planning your coursework.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIAStudents will be ranked and admitted

based on the sum of the following:

Completion Points for the five core courses

Five Core Course Grade Points

Weighted scores on the Pre-Nursing Assessment

Scores will be totaled and ranked

COMPLETION POINTS

For both RN and LPN programs:

Students will receive 4 points for each of the following classes completed at the time of evaluation: BIO 1007, BIO 1008, BIO 1009, ALH 1000 and ALH 1002 A Minimum grade of C required

Courses must have been completed less than 7 years from the time of evaluation (Spring 2010 or later for Fall 2017 admission cycle)

If a student has repeated the course, the highest letter grade will be used in the calculation of the nursing formula score total

Maximum 20 points

CORE COURSE GRADE POINTSFor both RN and LPN programs:

Grade points for: BIO 1007, BIO 1008 and BIO 1009, ALH 1000 and ALH 1002 divided by 2.5 A Minimum grade of C required Courses must have been completed less than 7 years

from the time of evaluation (Spring 2010 or later for Fall 2017 admission cycle)

If a student has repeated the course, the highest letter grade will be used in the calculation of the nursing formula score total

Maximum 28.8 points

PRE-NURSING ASSESSMENT EXAMStudents will take a pre-nursing entrance exam – for Fall 2017 admission— Health Education Services, Inc. (A2 HESI Exam)

All students will take the exam in April in the IVCC Assessment Center on the Main Campus

Students must pay the cashier for the test at the time they turn in their intent ($35 fee)

The A2 HESI is a standardized test based on content area scored in grammar, vocabulary, anatomy, math, and reading comprehension

The A2 HESI test may be taken only one time per year

STANDBY LIST

Students who apply and who meet the minimum requirements but are not admitted are added to a Standby List

If an opening occurs, students are offered admission to the program based on their Standby List number

If you apply for both the RN and the LPN programs and you are admitted to the program that is not your preference, you will be placed on the Standby List for your preferred program

Standby lists do not carry over from year to year

ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK “The Gen Eds”

Students also must complete certain general education courses as part of the degree (RN) or certificate program (LPN)

It is highly recommended that these be completed before beginning the program to maximize performance

A minimum grade of “C” is required for:

RN - ENG 1001, ENG 1002, PSY 1000, SOC 1000

LPN - ENG 1001 and PSY 1000

ALH 1001, SFC 1000, ALH 1202 and BIO 1200 are strongly recommended

Students who fail to complete all the general education courses by the point of graduation will not be allowed to take the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX) or graduate with their class

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS Placement testing is required in English, Reading

and Mathematics (unless you have completed the appropriate courses at IVCC or another college or university and transferred the credit to IVCC)

All students must complete up to and including or test out of the following coursework: MTH 0900, RED 1008, ENG 0900 and/or ENG0909

Initial Placement testing is free. There is a nominal cost to re-take any portion of the test

Certified Nurses Aide CNA COMPLETION

Proof of current IL certification is required The CNA class - ALH 1214 must be completed by Spring

semester prior to first nursing course Students must test out of IVCC’s RED0800 or earn an

ACT subscore of 18 in Reading to enroll in ALH1214Illinois Department of Public Health

verify your state registry status and determine if you are active or inactive

CNA COMPLETION If your CNA certification is older than three years at the time of

evaluation, proof of hours worked (1020) during last three years must be submitted (May 2014 or earlier)

Hours must be documented from employer

Students who have not worked 1020 hours in the last three years and are listed on the CNA registry can take the CNA refresher course (ALH 1215 must be completed by Spring semester prior to first nursing course)

Students who have not worked 1020 hours in the last 3 years and are not located on the CNA registry must retake the CNA course (ALH 1214)

Hours must verify performance of 21 basic CNA skills. CNA’s in nursing homes and hospitals traditionally meet this requirement. Home care and doctor’s offices traditionally do not

DRUG TESTING/CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK

All admitted students will be required to pass a drug test and a criminal background check

Failure to undergo or pass the drug test and the criminal background check will result in dismissal from the program

Students are responsible for paying the fees for these tests/checks
