    CHAPTER I

    BACKGROUND

    Related to the attitude, attitude its one of the important

    factors that encourage the students succeed in learningEnglish. As a teacher will be, we should concern to this

    phenomena. By having positive attitude, it can appear

    positive influence in their learning in classroom. The lesson

    will be well accepted, easy to understand and appear good

    comprehension. Therefore, we need discuss this case furtherand looking for the method or appropriate ways to increase

    the positive attitude of the students toward English learning.

    Objective of The Research

    The objective of the research is to find

    out the students have positive attitudes

    toward foreign language learning in theclassroom context of MA Pondok

    Madinah Makassar.

    REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Previous Related Researches :- Amahoru (2003) stated that the students

    of Sports Science Department of FIKUNM had positive attitude toward learningEnglish.

    - Hamsiah (2000) stated that the studentshad positive attitudes toward learning

    English by using students worksheet, asthe aggregate percentage of the studentsgot from strongly agree and agree.

    Waziruddin Djafar (1994) the students will

    have positive attitude toward readingcomprehension lesson in English if the

    materials are based on the studentsprogrammers of study and the teachershave good pedagogue and expertise inteaching English. The students areinterested in reading comprehension in

    English. If the materials are given and theteachers performance can engage theirinterest to learnt it.

    The Measurement of Attitude

    Morgan, et al. ( 1979:451-453) the most common way ofmeasuring attitudes are the self-report method, attitudescale, public opinion polls and behavioral measures.

    Self-Report Method

    Self report method includes elaborate attitudequestionnaires or attitude scale, in which a person answermany questions as well as public opinion polls, in whichmany attitudes are sampled by only a few questions oneach issues.

    Attitude scaleOne way to measure the attitude is called attitude scale.Attitude scale attempt to determine what an individualbelieves, perceives, or feels.

    Public opinion (attitudes) Polls

    In public opinion polling, many people are asked onlyof few questions each in order to obtain a roughindication of attitudes in a large sample of the

    population. The question are chosen so that apersons attitudes can be quickly classified whetherfavorable, unfavorable or undecided.

    Behavioral Measures

    Researchers sometimes use behavioral measures ofattitude, especially when there is reason to believethat people may be either unwilling or unable toreport their own attitudes.

    CHAPTER III

    METHODE OF THE RESEARCH Method of the Research

    This research used a descriptive method.

    Variable and Research Design

    This research will use three variables namely studentspositive attitude, learning English language, andclassroom context.

    Research Design

    This research applied a descriptive method to find outthe description of the students positive attitude towardforeign language learning in the classroom context.

    Chapter iii Population

    The population of this research was the studentsofMA Pondok Madinah Makassar.

    Sample

    This research used census sampling technique,that is taking the total population: class A andclass B as the sample. The researcher had givenquestioner to all samples totaling 40 students.

    Instrument of the ResearchThe instrument of this research wasquestionnaire. It consisted 20 questions.

    CHAPTER III Procedure of Collecting DataThe researcher distributed the questionnaire to thestudents and asked them to answer the question given.The researcher allowed 20 minutes for them to answerthe questions after the researcher gave them

    explanation. Techniques of Data Analysis

    The data were collected through the questionnaire andanalyzed by applyied the following formula :
