    Introduction to book of Numbers

THE Book of Numbers reads almost like a chronicle of the principal events during the thirty-eight years which elapsed between Israel's stay in the wilderness of inai and their arrival onthe borders of !anaan"

#hat took place during the $ourney to %ount inai had been intended to prepare the peoplefor the solemn events there enacted" imilarly& the thirty-eight years wanderings whichfollowed were designed to fit Israel for entering and possession of the (and of )romise" Theoutward history of the people during that period e*hibited& on the one hand& the constant careand mercy of +ehovah& and on the other& His holiness and His $udgments" The laws andordinances given them were needful for the organi, ation of the commonwealth of Israel in itsfuture relations" brief analysis of the whole book will show the connection of all"

In general& the Book of Numbers seems to consist of three parts..

    I / Numbers 0-01.01 2 3etailing the preparations for the march from inai4

0" The numbers and the outward arrangement of each of the tribes&/ Numbers 0 &52 and the appointment of the (evites to their service /6& 7"24

5" (aws concerning the higher and spiritual order of the people& culminating in the priestly blessing /8& 9"24

6" The three last occurrences before leaving %ount inai /:& ;& adesh& detailing all that happened there / 01.01-07 24

5" =rom the announcement of the death of the generation which had 058 come outfrom Egypt to the re-assembling of the people at >adesh in the fortieth yearafter the E*odus /08-0

    69.6;2"

Before leaving the encampment at %ount inai& ?od directed %oses and aron to take a

census of all who constituted the host of Israel in the language of cripture" @ ll that are ableto go forth to war&@ @their armies&@ / Numbers 0.6 2 that is& @every male from twenty years oldand upwards"@ In this they were to be assisted by one delegate from each tribe& @every onehead of the house of his fathers@ / 0.7 24 or& as they are designated in ver" 09& @the called/representatives2 of the congregation& princes of their paternal tribes& heads of thousands inIsrael"@

The latter e*pression indicates that the census was taken on the plan proposed by +ethro&/E*odus 0;.50 & 582 by which Israel was arranged into thousands& hundreds& fifties& and tens"This also accounts for the even numbers assigned to each tribe as the final result of thenumbering& %anifestly& the census was made on the basis of the poll taken nine months

before for the purpose of the @atonement money"@ / E*odus 61.00-09 2 This poll had yielded atotal of 916&881& /E*odus 6;.59 2 which is precisely the same number as that in Numbers0.79 "

)robably& therefore& the census was substantially only a re-arrangement and registration ofthe people according to their tribes& in thousands& hundreds& fifties& and tens& made with theco-operation of the hereditary rulers of the tribes" The above number of men capable of

bearing arms would& if we may apply modern statistical results& imply a total population ofupwards of two million" Thirty-eight years later& $ust before entering upon possession of theland& a second census was taken& / Numbers 59 2 which yielded a total number of 910&:61capable of bearing arms / 59.80 2& thus showing a decrease of 0;51 during the years of

wandering in the wilderness" rranging these two censuses according to the tribes& and placing them side by side& we gather some interesting information.

    a. Israel is at one of its lowest points in history; it has just rebelliously rejected
