FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS Feast day – October 2nd
Angels are pure spirits, persons, but bodiless, created by God with more acute intelligence and greater power than humans. Their office is to praise God, to be his messengers and to watch over man. It is the general teaching of theologians, that particular angels are appointed and commanded by God to guard each particular person that is born into the world. These guardian angels lead the individual towards Heaven by defending their charges from evil, helping them in prayer, and suggesting virtuous deeds. Guardian angels act upon the senses and imagination, not directly on the will, so that the co-operation of the one who they guard is required. In Matthew, Christ deters people from scandalizing any of His little ones, because their angels behold the face of God, and they will demand punishment of God against any, who cause their wards to suffer harm. From its beginning until death, each human life is surrounded by its specific Guardian Angel’s watchful care and intercession. “May the angels lead you into paradise; May the martyrs come to welcome you And take you to the holy city, The new and eternal Jerusalem.” (Rite for Christian Burial)
