What the Issue EntailsNuclear power is power that is most generally electric produced from manmade nuclear reactions. Commercial plants use what is called nuclear fission, which is a nuclear reaction that allows an atom to break its nucleus into smaller parts creating free neutrons, which then produces photons. These then release large amounts of energy that we use in our everyday lives. In 2007, 14% of the worlds energy came from nuclear power.

Examples

A positive effect of nuclear power on the environment is the reduction of the burning of fossil fuels. Nuclear power would reduce the U.S. reliance on oil and other fossil fuels, the burning of which is a major contributor to many environmental problems, including air pollution and global warming. In and of itself, nuclear power makes no contribution to global warming.

Local ConnectionsSouthern California Edison Co. and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE) own the two operating units at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Unit 2 is a 1,070 MW PWR (pressurized light water reactors) and Unit 3 is a 1,080 MW PWR.
