1. Overview

This Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Manual has been developed to document

the requirement of the Northern Territory Government (NTG) describe the procedures to be

followed in the production of electronic drawings and to ensure uniformity of both data

generated using internal systems or data supplied to Technical Records from external sources.

The CADD Manual outlines the requirements for production of electronic drawings and

enable uniformly across data being generated and supplied to the Department.

1.1 Scope

Many documents used by the NTG are prepared using various software. The NTG generally requires all documents prepared on its behalf to be in electronic format. This electronic document format is to assist in consistency within the NTG quality assurance and document management.

This manual “NTG Technical Drawings Part 2 – Civil CADD Manual” comprises of the technical drawing specifics and design intent of projects and is to be read in conjunction with “NTG Technical Drawings Part 1 – Requirements for Technical Records Management” for the specific electronic document requirements and principles.

2 Media

The NTG current CADD drawings are to be saved in the latest version available. At the time of this document version, AutoCAD drawings can be saved down to version 10 dwg. Mircostation Drawings are to be saved as V8i 2010 dgn.

2.1 Media Transfer Types

The media type must be supplied to Technical Records. Refer to Section 7 of NTG Technical

Drawings Part 1 – Requirements for Technical Records Management for the most suitable

electronic file submission process.

2.2 Compression

eTransmit - When you select a set of drawing files in a transmittal package, it automatically

includes all related dependent files such as xrefs and font files. AutoCAD users may use

eTransmit to include all related dependent files with a zip file or a folder option in a

transmittal package.

It is the CAD operator’s responsibility to supply data using a compression format appropriate

to the NTG system.

2.3 Viruses

All electronics files (Examples: Zip, docx, xlsm, dwg, dgn, pdf etc.) including attachment from

emails shall be scanned and free of any VIRUSES.

3 Data

3.1 CADD Packages

The NTG uses a range of CADD packages. The data is to be supplied in a format suitable to the

receiving CADD package. Currently supported CADD packages are:

AutoCAD 2019 is a three-dimensional modelling package used for producing

mechanical, structural, electrical and architectural drawings.

Microstation CONNECT Edition Update 6 – Version 10.06.00.38. A three dimensional

computer aided design package, used mainly for civil and hydraulic works.

12d Model Edition (11(c1q) and 12(c1m)). A three-dimensional modelling software

used by civil sections.

AutoTURN Version 10.2. Is a roadway design software tool for analysing and

evaluating vehicle manoeuvres in projects incorporating intersections, roundabouts,

property accesses and/or bus bays.

3.2 Format

CADD data is to be supplied in data format agreed to by NTG and compatible with currently

used versions of the supported CADD packages listed above. Acceptable formats are:

All data format for Civil works shall be MicroStation (e.g. *.dgn) or AutoCAD (dwg) formatted.

It is the data supplier’s responsibility to supply data in a format agreed to meet the NTG

standards. CADD drawings produced by other than the nominated CADD software shall be

translated into the appropriate above discipline format. The consultant shall be responsible

for the correctness of the translation process in all aspects to meet the NTG standards. Any

cost of processing required due to incorrect and or poor translation and or drafting will be

borne by the consultant.

4 Data Delivery

4.1 Data Presentation and Delivery

CADD data will be presented and delivered in accordance with Section 6 - General Drawing

Standards of this Manual for the specific type of work being performed,

On completion of a successful transfer of data, media and relevant plotted output become

the property of the NTG. This includes all data transferred for the duration of the Contract.

5 CADD Data Transfer of Files All CAD files are to be electronically logged thought Technical Records once each drawing is revised as a “CONTRACT DRAWING” Revision 0. Any revision changes once drawings have been issued as “CONTRACT DRAWING” are also to be logged with Technical Records. Any projects that are stopped before going to Contract will also need to be logged with Technical Records with the latest revision letter. Files are to be submitted as per Section 2 requirements.

6 General Drawing Standards

The drawings shall comply with Australian Standard AS1100 and the relevant discipline.

AS1100.101-1992 and AS1100.101-1992/Amdt1-1994: Technical drawing – General

principles.

AS1100.201-1992 and AS1100.201-1994/Amdt-1994: Technical drawing – Mechanical

engineering drawing.

AS1100.301-1985 and AS1100.301 Supp 1-1986: Architectural drawing.

AS/NZS1100.501:200: Technical drawing – Structural engineering drawing.

AS1100.401-1984: Technical drawing – Engineering survey and engineering survey

design drawing.

In order to keep the drawing accuracy and consistency with its reference files, model space in

the drawing shall not be moved to different coordinates, nor rotated to different angles, and

kept to the scale of 1 to 1.

Where doubt exists to the document requirements, refer your concern to the designated

Project Officer, or to the Manager Civil Design.

6.1 Line Attributes

The NTG has adopted ten line thicknesses to be used in the presentation of drawings. All

drawing details are to be represented by using these line thicknesses. On electronic plans,

single vector lines of specified colour are used to represent these line thicknesses. The

correlation between line colour, weight and thickness is as shown in Table 3.0. When

transferred to the NTG, no other line colour/weight/thickness combination is to be supplied

unless by agreement with the project officer.

NB. Where lines are required to be shown as background information or reduce density hatching, colour 9 (grey) for AutoCad and MicroStation are to be used.

AutoCAD users can have an additional grey scales having some percentage of screening value assigned to that colour. Screening of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 percent to each of the colour.

When plotting an “A1” size sheet at “A3” the line widths should be halved (the reduction factor when reducing “A1” sheets to “A3” size sheets).

6.1.1 Survey in Design drawings

When design lines are to become the focus on drawings, survey layers are to be greyed out. Used Colour 9, this will enhance the items that required for construction and leave the existing features in the back ground.

6.2 Text Attributes

NTG accepts four text heights to be used in the presentation of drawings. All text on the

drawings is to be represented by using these text heights. The correlation between text

colour, weight and height is as shown in Table 5.0. When transferred to the NTG, no other

text colour/weight/height' combination is to be supplied unless in writing to the delegated

project officer.

6.3 Layer Names

The intent of the layering system is to have an intuitive naming structure that will allow any

item/object to be turned off and not affect any other information on the drawing. Within the

Civil and Survey Drawing Profile (refer 6.7 Standardised Drawing Profiles) Line styles and their

naming convention have been established. These line styles and their attributes are reflected

in the examples tabled in Figures 19 through to 23.

The use of layers has been standardised and is outlined in the File structure tables in Figures

19 through to 23. As a general rule, a particular element should be generated on the

appropriate layer. When deciding to place an element on a discrete layer consideration needs

to be given as to whether there is an explicit need to have the element displayed or frozen

e.g. when the file is to be used by other disciplines, they may need to turn off hatching, thus

all hatching should be generated on the layer “C-HAT”.

6.3.1 New layers and the Naming of New Layers

When a new layer is to be created, the following layer name convention applies:

#-**nnn

Where:

“#” is Discipline Identifier (C = Civil, E = Electrical, M = Mechanical,

P = PAWA Projects and Designs, S = Survey).

“-“ is the minus character.

“**” is sub-types of each of the Discipline Identifiers (e.g. DIM = Dimension,

TXT = Text, HAT = Hatch patterns, DSH = general dashed style lines).

“nnn” is the modifier relating to the line thickness at full scale

(e.g. 20, 25, 35, 50, 70, 100). Otherwise leave blank.

Here are some of the examples: C-TXT20, C-DIM35, M-HAT100 etc…

The operator will be responsible for the consistent use of layer names throughout all of their

drawing files, and data that is only relevant to each individual layer name should be on that

layer.

6.5 Font

NTG requires true Type Font Arial be used on NTG Title Blocks (or Drawing Sheets). For other

presentations and design drawings, the following criteria should be met:

The font is vector based for all descriptions within the drawing

The font is true type format for all Title Block / Drawing Sheet script.

General form of characters to be as per ISO CP.

Cell size / aspect ratio to be 1.

Characters to be monospaced.

To comply with these requirements it is suggested to use the fonts shown in TABLE 7.0 with the

nominated applications. For all text unless otherwise specified.

6.6 Reference Files

Reference files are design or raster files that can be attached and displayed, plotted, and (in

the case of reference design files) used for construction purposes, but they cannot be

modified in any way.

They improve the efficiency of the CADD process by displaying data from different design files

in the active file. When one of the referenced drawings is changed that change is reflected in

every design file that the file has been referenced into.

When drawing data is supplied to the NTG that has attached reference files, NTG require the

attached files to merge or bind into the drawing, AutoCAD users are to include all related

dependent files with a zip file or a folder option in an eTransmit process.

6.7 Standardised Drawing Profiles

There are two standardised drawing profiles that are downloadable from the NTG Technical

Standards, Guidelines and Specifications, Road Design Standards web site. They are the Civil

and Survey Drawing Profiles.

The civil and survey drawing profiles both contain prepared drawing sheets, layers, dimension

styles, text styles, menus and line styles for consultants to use. This tool is to help retain NTG

quality assurance when drawings are compiled by all operators. Also within the Civil and

Survey Drawing Profile is a drop down signage list for quick access to the block library of most

of the signs used on Australian roads. Refer to Figure 24 as an example of what is available.

6.8 Drawing Sheet The NTG has its own A1 drawing sheet template. As mentioned in 6.7 above, the drawing sheet template is within the downloadable new Civil and Survey Drawing Profile.

Setup instructions are available on the same abovementioned link to assist with the download and setup into the CAD software.

6.9 Model Space All civil drawings are to be 1:1 scale, units of measure in metres. Co-ordinates of survey are to be in the MGA co-ordinate system. All text and drawing information is to remain within the model space.

6.10 Paper Space The only drawing within paper space is the A1 title block. All other information is held in model space and brought in with scaled view ports.

6.11 Drawing Title Blocks

NTG title blocks are to be used on all NTG works. Refer to Figure 1 - NTG title block.

6.12 Plotting There are serval plot style tables within the NTG drawing template. When plotting contract drawings DIPL- A1Mono.ctb for A1 plotters and DILP – A1 to A3Mono.ctb when plotting to an A3 printer.

When there is a need to plot in colour for drawings such as concept designs or when overlaying on google images, DILP – A1Colour.ctb and DILP – A3Colour.ctb are to be used.

6.13 Transfer from AutoCAD to 12D

6.13.1 12D Input mapping file A mapping file has been created to import AutoCAD data into 12D. The mapping file recognises the layer names, line styles and colour from AutoCAD and reconfigures them into the 12D format.

The mapping file and the instructions on how to upload the file can be down loaded from https://dipl.nt.gov.au/infrastructure/technical-standards-guidelines-and-specifications/road-design-standards.

6.13.2 12D Plotting to AutoCAD Two plot files have been created to assist when plotting from 12D to AutoCAD for the design of roads. One file is for the Plan and Longitudinal Section sheets while the other is for the Cross Section sheets. The files have set scales to the department preference. Other Engineering Drawing Scales can be used for clarity purposes. Each plot file has already been populated with the relevant model names.

6.14 Basis of Design The Basis of Design provides the criteria applied to a design. This has now been introduced as a single drawing sheet within the set of civil drawings and is to display a comprehensive basis of design criteria. The base of the drawing is a comprehensive downloadable spreadsheet containing dropdown data for most of the design criteria and project specific minimum values. The spreadsheet display allows for the project specific minimum values to be compared against the design minimum values.

(vi) "Depth to Invert" - the height distance between the top of structure and the invert of the pipe. The top of this box becomes the Datum line.

c Provide lined rows in order after the Datum Line, as titled, to include the following information:

(i) Line 1 label "Pipe Grade (%)" - show the grade of the pipe lines

(ii) Line 2 label "Pipe Diameter (mm)/Type" - provide the line diameter or box size and denote whether it is a RCP or RCBC

a These drawing are liken to a miniature set of road drawings, thus requiring their own typical cross section and details, Plan and Longitudinal Section and Cross Section drawings.

6.15.26 Landscaping and Irrigation Plans

a Provide overall project area plan and identify landscaping areas by including:

(i) Provide drawing references of the detail sheets for the various landscape areas

(ii) Provide a table listing tree and tube stock species and provide pot sizes, spacing, fertilizer treatment types and quantities

(iii) Provide a table listing fertilizer treatment types and descriptions

(iv) Provide a table to list topsoil mix types and include soil mix ratio and type, prescribed additives to the soil mix and location

b Detail sheets are to include the following:

(i) Vertical and horizontal join lines and references to associated drawings

(ii) Appropriate bar scales

(iii) A legend that covers all elements shown on the drawing

(iv) Provide set out details for planting areas, tree pits and irrigation supply points. Set out details should be provided as either a chainage and an offset, or as per 6.13.20(j).

6.15.30 Street and Pathway Lighting Plans and Details

a Street and pathway lighting shall comply with the standards defined in the project brief

b Lighting plans are to be accompanied with design contoured Lux level layouts.

(i) The Lux level layouts are to take into consideration the project landscaping and provide a design clear of illumination obstructions and ghosting around kerbs and on road structures.

c Locality Plan, Legend & Notes.

(i) This Drawing shows the location of the works, a Legend containing symbols and their description used throughout the drawing. Include General Notes, Works by Power and Water Notes and Works by Developers / Contractors Notes.

6.15.31 Traffic Signals

a The traffic signals design shall be in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Department’s Traffic Signals Design Brief and associated drawing examples and standard drawings referred to In this document and in the Traffic Signals Design Brief.

b Traffic Signal Layout Plan

(i) Refer to Standard Drawing CSxxxx and Example xx in the Traffic Signals Design Brief.

(ii)

The traffic signals layout plan is to show the layout of the intersection in a lighter colour, the signal poles and the pole number alphabetical numbered, and the signal symbols for each pole. Also within the plan view show the Signal Detector Loops and their groups, Conduit, Traffic Signal Controller, Power connection, Communications Pit, Detector Cable Pit and Conduit Junction Pit. Within the remainder of the drawing show a Lantern Schedule and a Legend. The lantern schedule is to show the Type of Signal, Size of the Signal, Lantern Head, Cowls Opened or Closed and Pole Location. Within the legend show the Signal Type Symbols and the corresponding alphabetical numbering, Pole / Pedestal Symbol, Conduit Junction Pit, Detector Cable Pit, Traffic Signal Controller, Detector Quadrupole Loop, Conduit sizes and Signal Group are all to be shown.

c Traffic Signal Electrical Works Drawing

(i) Refer to Standard Drawing CSxxxx and Example xx in the Traffic Signals Design Brief.

(ii)

The traffic signal electrical works drawing contains a plan view of the electrical layout as per the Traffic Signals Layout Plan. The purpose of the drawing is to show the phases of the signals including schematic diagrams for each signal phase and the electrical tables showing the conflicts, signal groups, run / phases and detector loops. This drawing is a standard drawing that is obtainable on request from the NTG Technical Records and will require filling out by a competent operator or traffic engineer in accordance with the Department’s specification and Traffic Signals Design Brief.

d Plans should be drawn to a scale that provides adequate detail and clarity of the information presented.
