SECTION 099123 - INTERIOR PAINTING (OTC)Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Section includes surface preparation and the application of paint systems on [interior substrates.] [the following interior substrates:]

1. Concrete.

2. Clay masonry.

3. Concrete masonry units (CMU).

4. Steel.

5. Cast iron.

6. Galvanized metal.

7. Aluminum (not anodized or otherwise coated).

8. Wood.

9. Gypsum board.

10. Plaster.

11. Spray-textured ceilings.

12. Cotton or canvas insulation covering.

13. ASJ insulation covering.

B. Related Requirements:

Retain subparagraphs below to cross-reference requirements Contractor might expect to find in this Section but are specified in other Sections.

Factory- or shop-applied primers applied as Work of other Sections must be coordinated with field-applied finish coats. Review other Sections for factory- or shop-primed products and reference this Section for product requirements.

1. Section051200 "Structural Steel Framing" for shop priming of metal substrates with primers specified in this Section.

2. Section099600 "High-Performance Coatings" for high-performance and special-use coatings.

3. Section099113 "Exterior Painting" for surface preparation and the application of paint systems on exterior substrates.

4. Section099300 "Staining and Transparent Finishing" for surface preparation and the application of wood stains and transparent finishes on interior wood substrates.

1.3 DEFINITIONS

Definitions of gloss levels below are from "MPI Architectural Painting Specification Manual" (hereafter, "MPI Manual").

Retain terms that remain after this Section has been edited for a project.

A. Gloss Level1: Not more than 5 units at 60 degrees and 10 units at 85 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

B. Gloss Level2: Not more than 10 units at 60 degrees and 10 to 35 units at 85 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

C. Gloss Level3: 10 to 25 units at 60 degrees and 10 to 35 units at 85 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

D. Gloss Level4: 20 to 35 units at 60 degrees and not less than 35 units at 85 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

E. Gloss Level5: 35 to 70 units at 60 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

F. Gloss Level6: 70 to 85 units at 60 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

G. Gloss Level7: More than 85 units at 60 degrees, according to ASTMD523.

1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product. Include preparation requirements and application instructions.

B. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of topcoat product.

Delete "Samples for Initial Selection" Paragraph above if colors and other characteristics are preselected and specified or scheduled. Retain "Samples for Verification" Paragraph below with or without above.

C. Samples for Verification: For each type of paint system and in each color and gloss of topcoat.

1. Submit Samples on rigid backing, 8 inches (200 mm) square.

2. Step coats on Samples to show each coat required for system.

3. Label each coat of each Sample.

4. Label each Sample for location and application area.

D. Product List: For each product indicated, include the following:

1. Cross-reference to paint system and locations of application areas. Use same designations indicated on Drawings and in schedules.

2. VOC content.

1.5 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS

A. Furnish extra materials[,from the same product run,] that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.

Retain "Paint" Subparagraph below for projects that require only limited quantities of extra materials. If necessary, replace percentage with a specific number of gallons (liters) or cases and include an expanded description of the quantity of each material and color.

1. Paint: [5] percent, but not less than [1 gal. (3.8L)] of each material and color applied.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Mockups: Apply mockups of each paint system indicated and each color and finish selected to verify preliminary selections made under Sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution.

1. Architect will select one surface to represent surfaces and conditions for application of each paint system specified in Part3.

a. Vertical and Horizontal Surfaces: Provide samples of at least 100 sq. ft. (9 sq.m).

b. Other Items: Architect will designate items or areas required.

2. Final approval of color selections will be based on mockups.

a. If preliminary color selections are not approved, apply additional mockups of additional colors selected by Architect at no added cost to Owner.

3. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing.

Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups.

4. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Store materials not in use in tightly covered containers in well-ventilated areas with ambient temperatures continuously maintained at not less than 45 degF (7 degC).

1. Maintain containers in clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue.

2. Remove rags and waste from storage areas daily.

If necessary, insert special requirements for fire protection, heating, ventilation, and other conditions for storage areas on-site.

1.8 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Apply paints only when temperature of surfaces to be painted and ambient air temperatures are between 50 and 95 degF (10 and 35 degC).

B. Do not apply paints when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; at temperatures less than 5 degF (3 degC) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces.

See Editing Instruction No.1 in the Evaluations in Section099100 "Painting" for cautions about named manufacturers and products. For an explanation of options and Contractor's product selection procedures, see Section016000 "Product Requirements.""Manufacturers" Article lists manufacturers with MPI-approved products for MPI paint categories included in the Section Text. Not all manufacturers provide approved products in every category. The list was current when this Section was updated; see current "MPI Approved Products List" at www.paintinfo.com for updated lists of manufacturers.
