Grateful to be Getting a Multicultural EducationAt this school everyone has the opportunity to learn a language other than English. I have been learning Spanish for nearly 7 years. It’s part of my multicultural education because we don’t just learn the language. I’ve also learnt songs, dances and customs, which gives me a broad understanding of another culture.A multicultural education is about learning information and stories about people with backgrounds and beliefs different from our own. My class this year read Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. This is a book about a refugee from Afghanistan. Our school community and our Australian community includes people who came to Australia as refugees and learning from stories like Boy Overboard gives me a better understanding of what they experience. It can help make me a better friend, and a more understanding citizen.A good education prepares us for our life after school. Life after school for a lot of us will include travel and wouldn’t it be better if you knew a bit about the country beforehand? Did you know that in Japan it is rude to leave your shoes on in someone’s house? In Australia, we come from many cultures so it’s still really helpful to have a good multicultural education in school. It’s common for people to move countries – either out of choice or need, like refugees. So you are always living in a multicultural society no matter where you are. Have you ever accidentally called someone a racist name? If you have an understanding of other cultures and what is important to them it means you can avoid offending people. This is important in the playground but also in jobs and politics.

Getting a multicultural education is also important because if you’re only learning about one culture people feel like they don’t belong and are being excluded. Whereas if you’re learning about a range of different cultures then people can feel like they do belong. For example, it’s great that everyone here can celebrate NAIDOC week and even if we don’t celebrate Ramadan, we can support our friends who do.I wouldn’t want to grow up in a community with no multiculturalism because that would be boring! If you grow up in a multicultural community you will become curious and inspired to find out about different cultures.A good multicultural education in school will mean that when we grow up, people can get along better and therefore be happier. It can also influence jobs. If you want to be a dancer, singer or actor it would really help if you tour to different countries. To be a flight attendant, pilot or anything really, it would always come in handy.Education prepares us for life after school but it is also part of our life, so if the world around us is multicultural, then why wouldn’t our education be? As our society becomes more multicultural so does our education. For example, neither of my parents got much of a multicultural education, but I am definitely getting one. My sister is only in Year 2 and can speak some Vietnamese, can dance in Indian Bollywood style, and knows that her friends have all different kinds of religions, beliefs and special holidays.I’ve given you many reasons why getting a multicultural education is important but for me it also makes school a lot more interesting and fun. And remember it is never too late to start learning!

PEACE POEMPeace is important to me because

It’s good for all living things to be relaxed with no stress.

The one minute silence on the 11 month of the 11 day of the 11 hour for Remembrance

Day Makes me think about all the soliders in

WW2 that died and were only 16 years old. By Will 5H

PEACE POEMSPeace is something you cannot buy.

Peace is something you cannot fight for,It is something that we strive for

That our world needs in order to succeed,But it gets too caught up in the blood and

war.All we need is love and peace for our future

Generations to be complete.By Eve, 5H

101 years ago, peace was declared,

For the dead for the broken and for the people filled with dread,

Now I sit there and think; what was it like A world without peace. What a fright!

But 101 years later our ancestors look down on us,

They remind me that there was peace and not just blood,

It was a relief, remembrance and a full heart of love,

And now I just stand in the minute of silence looking above

Students learnt about different forms of disabilities such as physical, invisible and sensory. They also learnt to identify difference as a positive thing which should be valued and celebrated. Students in Stage 3 learnt about inspiring Australians with a disability and the personal qualities that make a high achiever. We will continue to learn about diversity in Week 6 (18th November) when we celebrate ‘Week of Diversity’ across our school. Each day will focus on a different theme:Monday – What is ‘Diversity’ and what makes me special?Tuesday – Families come in all shapes and sizes.Wednesday – InclusionThursday – Mental Wellbeing – Strengthening self and othersFriday – Multicultural MunchJust Like You – Program Overview

Year 6 leaders report Hi everyone, I hope you have had an awesome year. Did you know that Year 6 raised over $800 at games day to help pay for the fun day, farewell dinner and more. I’m sure you played some amazing games. A few weeks ago, the leadership team went to the opening of the new Steel Park. The mayor of the Inner West, Darcy Byrne, attended the opening and made fantastic comments about our school! Year 6 will be running a $10 car wash fundraiser, on the 30th of November, we hope you can all come! Coming up is the Year 6 graduation dinner in the next few weeks. The theme is vintage/fancy dress up. We also have the School Picnic in the next few weeks and is always a fun time!We hope you can come to all these fun events, see you soon.

earlySTAGE This term kindergarten have been

learning all about narratives. We learnt that all narratives can be divided into three parts: an orientation which tells us when the story takes place, where it takes place and who it’s about, a complication which is the problem and a resolution which tells us how the problem is solved.

We are using this, in conjunction with our knowledge about adjectives to create our very own narrative. Check out some of our awesome orientations!

“Hello, my name is Rose. A little about me: I have the best teachers ever and my favourite game is soccer. When I was still writing my speech, I thought of a word… why? But when I remember the year six leaders, I don’t think of that word anymore. Do you know why? Because a leader doesn’t ask why? They ask why not? So today I’m going to talk about what makes a good leader.I want to make Marrickville West a better place by giving ideas for better days ahead. So, if you have an idea, talk to me. I’m going to let your voice speak out the loudest it can. Most leaders like to sit up in a chair while the other people are sitting on the floor. As for me, I want to sit on the floor with everyone else, because I believe in teamwork. A good leader is part of a team, they communicate and understand other people. So, make sure do the right thing for better years in the future.A good leader is someone who is always on task, understands people, is helpful, kind and a positive person that you trust. I could be that person anytime and anywhere, even when no one is watching. So please consider your choice wisely.Thank you for listening.”

By Rose 5B

“Before I start this speech I would like to acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here today. I especially want to acknowledge my nan and Aunty Linda.I stand here before you as a proud Wiradjuri student. I pay my respect to all the elders past and present. Hi, my name is James, I’ve been here at Marrickville West for 1 term. I’m here to be a leader in 2020. Here is a little bit about me I’m funny, calm and proud of my culture and heritage.I always try my best; I am just like every kid in this school. I have been to different schools which makes me adaptable. I make mistakes but I learn from them.If I was voted in as a leader of 2020, I would do a fundraiser so we can upgrade the sports equipment. If sports is not your thing and have great ideas to improve the school talk to me and I will work with Ms Ling to make it happen, because team work is how things get done. And good luck to all the other year five Students who have had the courage to get up here today and speak. Thank you for listening.”

By James 5B

Year 5 have been preparing for leadership 2020. They have been learning about what makes a good leader and writing speeches and creating posters. Ms Ling came and spoke to us about what makes a great leader here at MWPS, she told us she expects individuality, integrity and initiative. Everything that we strive for.Good luck to everyone who nominated themselves for the voting process for Year 6 leaders 2020. Remember, even if you do not officially get a leadership role, every student in Year 6 is a leader as you cannot do it alone. It takes teamwork to make a successful student body.

1SUPPORT UNIT update

On Friday, 8 November students in year 6 hosted a Games Day. It was a great day for K2D. They participated in several activities and even won prizes.

Students who didn’t attend swimming created a giant poppy for Remembrance Day. We learnt that red poppies represent the blood that was spilt, the green leaf represents the regrowth and the leaf is placed at 11 o’clock to represent the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Students from K/6M and 2/6H have been enjoying the intensive

swimming program together.

They absolutely love being in the water and demonstrate great water confidence and safety.

We tried to create sculptures of our

PEACE POEMPeace is such a beautiful sight,

but if I were in war, oh what a fright! Peace can be a world without war,

or when you sit in a corner with your mind in bore.

Peace in the war was no such thing, you couldn’t call your friend,

or hear the phone ring! The soldiers shed blood, others shed tears,

if you think about it a lot, they had the most fears.

I think we’re lucky that we live in peace, like an animal that has been released.

Peace is power, and it shall rise, we’re so lucky we no longer hear their cries.

By Sofia, 5H

Peace is not power Peace is love and freedom.

Peace is not a demand nor an achievement, Peace is something you can make happen

together. Peace is not ours until we make it ours,

So I stand in the minute of silence And think how lucky we are today.

The 8th of October was the big day, Game Day!!!! Year 6 created some of the great games for Years K-5 to play and raise money for the school. It was one like no other. Mr. R, our STEM teacher from Curtin University, came to our class and helped us prepare our games. He gave us great ideas and taught us some cool stuff! The first lucky group to come play our games were Kindergarten. It was their first experience and they enjoyed it. Then slowly each grade came each hour. We were very happy because while the kids played, they had a great time and everyone had a great laugh and smile!! We raised a lot of money that will go towards the school!!!

Help Bobin Public School rebuild their School Library

The small town of Bobin is located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales; Bobin has recently lost 20 homes to the catastrophic bushfires.

Bobin Public School was one of the schools in this area devastated by these recent fires.

Marrickville West Primary School would like to donate books to Bobin school library once the school has rebuilt. Our Minster Sarah Mitchell has pledge to rebuild the schools destroyed by these fires.

If you have new books or books in good condition suitable for a primary school library there will be a box left in the foyer at Marrickville West for collection.

Thank you for helping this very worthy cause.
