ational School of Drama is one of the foremost Ntheatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. Established in 1959 as a
constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the School became an independent entity in 1975 and was registered as an autonomous organization under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The School offers an intensive and comprehensive three-year course in Theatre. Successful candidates are awarded Diploma in Dramatic Art after completing the course. The training is based on a carefully planned syllabus which covers every aspect of theatre, in which theory is related to practice as a part of which, shows are performed before the public audience. The School has two performing wings: The Repertory Company, started in 1964, and the Theatre-in-Education Company (Sanskaar Rang Toli), which was founded in 1989. On completion of the three years diploma course, successful candidates may be considered for enrolment into either of these two companies, or granted a one year fellowship. The extension program of School, under which workshops for adult and children are conducted in various parts of the country, was launched in 1978.

ikkim Theatre Training Centre is the first centre of the SNational School of Drama outside Delhi, established in the year 2011 with 'One Year Residential Certificate
Course in Dramatic Arts'. Situated in the lush green picturesque valley of Gangtok, the centre offers a year-long extensive training in theatre.
The first phase of the course is devoted to training and grooming of the participants in which Yoga, Movement, Martial Arts, Voice and Speech, Music, Western Drama, Classical and Modern Indian Drama and various Methods of Acting are covered. The second phase focuses on technical training, Set design, Lighting, Make-up and other aspect of theatre. In the third phase, the participants experience a series of professional tours in and around Sikkim and other places of India which provide them with ample opportunity to open up and know different cultures, people and territories.
In 2012, the centre started its Repertory Company in which student from the previous year's training program were selected as Artists.

r. Arjun Deo Charan is a noted Rajasthani poet, critic, Dplaywright, theatre director and translator. As a prominent figure in Indian theatre, he shares his position
in top 10 theatre personalities of country with Habib Tanvir and Ratan Thiyam. Dr. Charan was born on 10 May 1954 in Mathania village in Jodhpur. His father Renvat Dan Charan also was an eminent Rajasthani poet and socialist, who had won Sahitya Akademi Award for his notable work ‘Uchhalo’. Dr. Charan has been the Head of Department of Rajasthani Language in the Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. He has been selected as Chairman of Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi, Jodhpur on 26 November 2011 for three years.
He is the founder of Rammat Theatre Group, Jodhpur, which is one of the prestigious theatre groups of the country and his plays have been performed in several National and International theatre festivals including Bharat Rang Mahotsav organised by National School of Drama.
Dr. Charan is the recipient of many awards, including Rajasthani Sahitya Akademi Award in1980, central Sahitya Akademi award for his book 'Dharam Judh' in 1992, Highest Award of Rajasthani Bhasa Sahitya Evam Sanskriti Akademi in 1997, Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999, Maru-Parampara Samman in 2004, Bihari Puraskar in 2011 by K. K. Birla Foundation for his Rajasthani poetry collection ‘Ghar to Ek Naam hai Bharose Ro’ and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012.
Presently, he is the Acting Chairman of India's most prestigious drama school, National School of Drama.

orn in 1959, Prof. Suresh Sharma completed his education Bin Lucknow. In 1982, he got his diploma in dramatics from Bhartendu Natya Academy, Lucknow. In 1985, he graduated
from National School of Drama, New Delhi with specialization in acting. Soon afterwards he joined 'Sambhav', a Delhi based theatre group, and acted in many of its prestigious productions.
In 1987-88, he established the first non-governmental theatre repertory in Mandi, a district of Himachal Pradesh. From 1996-98 for a period of two years, he worked as Artistic Director of Sri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, Delhi. In the year 1998, he established the first non–governmental Residential Theatre Academy in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
Prof. Sharma has been felicitated by Sahitya Kala Parishad for his acting skill. In 1988-89 Sangeet Natak Academy awarded ‘Mohana’, a play written and directed by Prof. Sharma as the best play under their 'Young Director's Scheme'. He has acted in more than thirty plays with various directors and has experience of working with almost all the eminent directors of India. Besides directing plays, Prof. Sharma has also done the very first Hindi translation of the book Stanislavsky System under the title 'Stanislavsky ke Abhinay Siddhant'.
Prof. Sharma joined the National School of Drama in August 1999 as Chief of the NSD Repertory Company and is presently Director In-charge of the School.

urrently the Dean Academics, Centre In-Charge and In-Charge of Cultural CExchange Programme of NSD, Dr. Abhilash Pillai is a play director, pedagogue, and scholar of contemporary Indian Theatre, who has directed
more than 30 productions in various Indian languages and English. He is often credited as one of the initiators of digital theatre in Modern Indian Drama with 'Anth Ananth', a 1995 production of NSD Repertory Company. His theatre reinforces the past and also the present through 20th and 21st century Indian Pop visuals, video, recorded sound and other technological interventions. His works draw on a wide array of materials but are presented in a contemporary aesthetic style and envision a dialogue between practice and scholarship that seeks to augment the perspective with critical knowledge about various issues concerned. As a theatre maker, he has been involved in several collaborative projects, international and national, and initiated first-ever collaboration between NSD and a Circus Company, culminating in a production 'Clowns & Clouds'. He did his graduation in BTA (Bachelor of Theatre Arts), Calicut University in 1991; did a three-year post-graduate diploma in dramatics from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi in Design & Direction, with distinction in 1994; passed a two-year diploma in Theatre Production and Stage Management with honours from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), London in 1998. Later, he did a one year intensive training in advanced theatre direction in association with eminent directors in the Orange Tree Theatre, U.K. from 1998-1999, and achieved Ph. D. from JNU, New Delhi in 2012. He started his artistic life as an artistic director of Abhinaya Theatre and Research Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in 1999.Dr. Pillai has authored a book on C.N. Sreekantan Nair – Vision and Mission of a Theatre Activist –published by the Central Sahitya Akademi. He has contributed articles on theatre in leading publications, attended seminars and conducted several workshops in India and abroad. Dr. Pillai served as Dean Academics of NSD during 2008-2011. He has been Artistic Director and Chief Curator of National Theatre Festival organised by Information & Public Relations Department of the Government of Kerala and ITFoK (International Theatre Festival of Kerala) organised by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi for couple of years. Besides, he was the Chief Technical Coordinator and Steering Committee Member of Bharat Rang Mahotsav from 2008- 2011. He is also the Advisory Committee member of 21st BRM.Among many awards, he has received the prestigious Sanskriti Award for achievements in theatre in 2002-03, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Award for theatre direction in 2012 and National School of Drama's Manohar Singh Smriti Puraskar in 2009.

His teaching experience spans almost 25 years and he has conducted several theatre workshops in different states of India including Sikkim, Jharkhand, Uttarkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal & Madhya Pradesh, organised by National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Academy & Kshitij Theatre Group in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.
Formed Kshitij Theatre Group (Repertory Company) at Delhi in 1988 and is the founder member of Yuva Rang Manch, Ranchi, Jharkhand from 1981. Mr. Kumar was the Board Member of School of Performing and Visual Arts at IGNOU, New Delhi from 2012 to 2014. He has been visiting faculty of Drama Department, Ranchi University and Raja Mansingh Tomar Music & Arts University, Gwalior.
He has received the Jharkhand State Award for Acting in the year 2016. In 2017, he was felicitated by “Sikkim Kalakar Sangh” for his immense contribution in promoting Theatre in Sikkim. He was conferred with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2016.
In addition, he has produced films, Serials, documentaries and educational films for Ministry of Culture & Doordarshan under the banner of Kshitij Theatre Group and Bharti Productions. He was Co-Producer of a 3 hour long film 'Kaala Heera' for Zee T. V., which was telecast in Jan. 2001 under special time slot. The film was based on Chasnala Coal Mine Disaster. Also co-produced a comedy serial of 13 episodes titled 'Gadbad Ghotala' for DD-1, was telecast in 1995.

First Phase
YOGA : Physical fitness and increased degree of alertness, grace and concentration, maximum use of voice capabilities achieved through the practiceof asana, kriyas and pranayama.
MOVEMENTS :
Students learn how to use their body, voice and imagination. They learn how to be aware of the body and concentrate on its rhythm, enter space and loosen their limbs.

Students staged its first production 'Abhigyan Shakuntalam' directed by Piyal Bhattacharya on 25 & 26 December 2019. Viva-Voce of the students held on 26 December.

Admission Related MattersApplication ProcessIn the year 2020-2021 batch, twenty two students will be selected for the one year residential certificate course in dramatic arts. The candidates should apply in the prescribed application form. The process of admission is as follows:
1. The prospectus and application form are available at the website: www.sikkim.nsd.gov.in
2. Application forms can be filled and submitted ONLINE as well as downloaded from the website.
3. If the candidate desires to send the hard copy of the completed application form, he/she may send it through Registered Post along with a demand draft of Rs. 150/- from any Nationalized Bank in favour of National School of Drama, Sikkim payable at Gangtok, copy of graduation certificate, birth certificate, caste certificate (creamy/non-creamy layer for OBC), address proof, letter of recommendation and experience certificate (if any) and four recent passport size photographs (non- returnable). The filled & completed application forms must be sent to Centre Director, National School of Drama, Development Area, Gangtok-737101, Sikkim.
4. If the candidate desires to fill and submit the form ONLINE, he/she may have to pay an application fee of Rs. 50/- through Net Banking, Credit Card or Debit Card. Selection Process
I) The screening of applicants is carried out in two stages. The preliminary screening comprises of an Audition & practical test which is conducted at Sikkim and/or through online.
ii) The final selection is subject to clearance of physical fitness test conducted at Gangtok, Sikkim.

VacationsThere will be a month long holiday in the academics.
Study TourA month long study tour organised every year to learn Indian Traditional/Folk forms in different places of the country.
Boarding & LodgingWe provide accommodation for both girls and boys. Accommodation provided to the students may be on a room-sharing basis which is mandatory.

i) Students are not allowed to enter into any arrangement during training outside the school.
ii) Students are not allowed to seek or accept any engagement to appear in public, neither on the amateur or professional stage, nor in radio, television or films. They may not seek or accept any employment during their term of study.
iii) Students must conduct themselves properly in accordance with the rules that govern manners and appearance. Any student found guilty of unbecoming conduct may be suspended or expelled from the School.
iv) Consuming alcohol in the School premises and hostel is strictly prohibited.
v) Students are not allowed to invite visitors or friends to classes or rehearsals except with prior permission from the Centre Director.
vi) It is obligatory for the students to enact any role that they are handed. They must participate in rehearsals and perform the role in the manner required by the teachers or the director of the play.
vii) Students have to abide by the hostel, mess and library rules.
viii) Students violating rules are liable to serve disciplinary action.
Stationary, Material & EquipmentThe centre will supply students a free of charge mount board, drawing paper, poster color, make-up material, props making material & wood for class room purposes only. Any other material will have to be purchased by the students.

AssessmentStudents will be evaluated after completion of six months of the course. In this evaluation, their work, projects and participation in the classroom activity will be considered along with assessment provided by the faculties. Bengal University with History (Honors) in 2010. Later, he has g raduated from National School of Drama, New Delhi in 2013 with specialization in Acting. As an actor, he has worked with wel l known theatre directors from India and abroad like Dr. Anuradha Kapur, Prof Robin Das, Dr. Abhilash Pillai, Prof. Tripurari Sharma, Prof. Jeffery Sichol (UK), Shri Bipin Kumar, Shri Shantanu Bose, Shri K. S. Rajendran, Ms. Hema Singh. He also travelled to China and performed at Beijing International Theatre Festival in 2010. He assisted in Repertory Company's production 'Niyam Tah Yehi Chha' directed by Prof. Kamaluddin Nilu. He has directed a play 'Identity' in Lepcha dialect. Acted in an Arunachal based movie 'My Country Land 1962' and 'Dhokbu- the keeper', a Lepcha feature film in 2017, Lhakpa has received Prag cine award in 2018 as best male actor for the movie 'Dhokbu- the keeper'.

Winter / Spring Theatre Festival
Theatre Festivals
Winter Theatre festival was initiated by NSD, Sikkim in the year 2016 in which Repertory Company stages its plays in Gangtok and other districts of Sikkim as well as in different parts of the country. When the festival occurs in the month of January-February every year, it is called Winter Theatre Festival, however, when it is organised between the months of March-May, it is called Spring Theatre Festival. As part of the festival, the Repertory Company has presented its plays in Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi, Gyalshing, Dibrugarh and Agartala till now. NSD, Sikkim organised the Spring Theatre Festival in New Delhi in the months of April-May 2019.

The nearest Airport to Gangtok is Pakyong (PYG), East District, located nearly 35 km south of Gangtok. Taxies/ vehicles can be hired from the pre-paid Taxi counter at the Airport to reach Gangtok. The taxi takes nearly one hour to reach Gangtok. Another airport is at Bagdogra, near Siliguri (WB), which is nearly 152 km away from Gangtok. The taxi takes about 5 hours to reach Gangtok.
The nearest Railway station to Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri (West Bengal). After arriving at NJP, one can hire taxi or take a shared jeep from the station itself or take an auto-rickshaw to go to Siliguri Bus Stand from where one can take jeep or bus operated by Sikkim National Transport (SNT).
