Nrusimha Kavacham

1. Nrusimha kavachamVakshye prahlodhenodhitham puraa,

Sarva rakshakaram punyam, sarvopadrava nasanam

 

I shall recite the armour of Narasimha recited in the olden times by Prahladha,

Which protects everything that is blessed and destroys all problems.

 

2. Sarva sapath karam chaiva swarga moksha pradhayakam,

Dhyathwa Narasimham devesam hema simhasana sthitham.

 

It gives all sorts of wealth and grants heaven as well as salvaion,

If it is chanted meditating on Narasimha as sitting on the throne.

 

3. Vivrythaasyaam trinayanam, sharad Indu sama prabham,

Lakshmyaalingitha vamangam, Vibhoothirupasritham.

 

He has three eyes, keeps his mouth open and has the glow of autumn moon,

And he is hugged on left side by Lakshmi and his form depends on his glowing power.

4. Chathur bhujam Komalangam Swarna kundala shobhitham,

Sarojashobhithoraskam rathna keyura mudhritham.

 

He has four hands, he has pretty limbs and wears a golden ear stud,

His chest shines like a lotus flower and he wears gem studded bracelet.

 

5. Thapatha kanchana sankasam Peetha nirmala vasasam,

Indradhi sura moulistha sphuran manikya deepthibhi.

 

He resembles molten gold and wears yellow cloths,

He shines in the light of rubies on his head of the saluting Indra and other devas.

 

6. Virajitha pada dwandwam shanka chakradhi hethibhi

Garuthmathaa savinayam sthuyamanam mudhanwitham.

 

He shines with two feet and holds the conch and wheel in his hand,

And Lord Garuda with humility offers him prayers with devotion.

 

7. Swahruth kamala samvasam kruthwa thu kavacham padeth,

Nrusimho may drusou pathu loka rakshanathma sambhava.

 

If one reads this armour after make, Lord Narasimha,

Who protects the world, Occupy the lotus of his mind

The Lord who is born to take care of this world will protect his head.

 

8. Sarvago api sthambha vasa phalam may Rakshathu dwanim,

Nrusimho may drusou pathu soma suryagni lochana.

 

Let my forehead be protected by the all pervading one who is in the pillar,

Let my sound be protected by Narasimha and

My eyes be protected by he who has sun, moon and fire as eyes.

 

9. Smruthim may pathu nruharir muni varya sthuthipriya,

Naasaam may simhanasathu, mukham Lakshmi mukha Priya.

 

Let my memory be protected by Narasimha who likes prayers from great sages,

Let my nose be protected by he who has a lion's nose,

And let my mouth be protected by he who loves the mouth of Lakshmi.

 

10. Sarva Vidhyadhipa pathu Nrusimho rasanaam mama,

Vakthram pathu indhu vadana sada prahlada vandhitha.

 

Let my taste buds be protected by the Lord of all knowledge, Narasima,

Lat my face be protected by the moon faced one saluted by Prahladha.

11. Nrusimha pathu may kandam, skandhou bhoo bharanantha kruth,

Divyasthra shobhitha bhujo Nrusimha pathu may bhujou.

 

Let my neck be protected by Narasimha,

And shoulders by him, who till the end, rules over the world,

And let that Narasimha whose arms shine,

With divine weapons protect my arms.

 

12. Karou may deva varadho, nrusimha pathu sarvadha,

Hrudayam yogi sadshyascha, nivasam pathu may Hari.

 

Let my hands be protected by the protector of devas,

Let me be protected from all sides by Lord Narasimha,

Let my heart be protected by him who can be approached by great sages,

And let my house be protected by Lord Hari.

 

13. Madhyam pathu Hiranyaksha, Vaksha kukshi vidaranaa,

Nabhim may pathu nruhari, sva nabhi brahma samsthuthaa.

 

Let my middle be protected by the God

Who tore apart chest and abdomen of Hiranyaksha,

Let my navel be protected by Lord Narasimha,

Who is praised by Brahma, who sprang from his own navel.

14. Brahmanda kotaya katyaam yasyasou pathu may katim,

Guhyam may pathuu guhyanaam manthraanaam guhya roopa druk.

 

Let my hip be protected by him,

On whose hips all the universe rests,

Let my private parts be protected by the mysterious one,

Who can only be seen by use of very secret mantras.

 

15. Ooru manobhava pathu jahnuni nara roopa druk,

Jange pathu dharaa bhara harthaa yo as ou nrukesari.

 

Let my thighs be protected by one who happens in the mind,

Let my knees be protected by him who has a human form,

Let my calves be protected by him who lightens my load,

And appears in the form of a combination of man and lion.

 

16. Sura rajya pradha pathu padhou may nruhareswara,

Sahasra seershaa Purusha pathu may sarva sas thanum.

 

Let my feet be protected by the God in the man lion form,

Who looks after the kingdom of all devas,

And let my entire body be protected by the God,

Who has one thousand heads.

 

17. Mahogra poorvatha pathu maha veeragrajo agnitha,

Maha Vishnu dakshine thu maha jwalasthu nairyathi.

 

Let the ferocious one protect me from the east,

Let the very valorous one protect from south east,

Let the great Vishnu protect me from the south,

And let God who blazes like a flame protect from south west.

 

18. Paschime pathu sarveso, Disi may sarvatho mukha,

Nrusimha pathu vayavyaam, soumyam bhooshana vigraha.

 

Let God of everything protect me from west,

Let the God who has faces everywhere protect all directions,

Let Narasimha protect me from north west,

And let the well ornamented one protect me from north.

 

19. Eeshanyo pathu bhadro may, srava mangala dhayaka,

Samsra bhayadha pathu mruthyor mruthyus nrukesari.

 

Let the God who protects and gives all things auspicious,

Protect me from the north west and let me protected,

From fear of birth and death by the Lord Narasimha,

Who is indeed death to death itself.

 

20. Idham nrusimha kavacham, prahladha mukha manditham,

Bhathiman ya paden nithyam sarva papam prumuchyathe.

 

This armour of Lord Narasimha which was narrated by Prahladha,

If read by a devotee daily, would save him from all his sins.

 

21. Puthravan, dhanavan loke deerga ayur upa jayathe,

Yam yam kamayathe kamam tham tham prapnonsthyasamsayam.

 

He would be blessed with sons, wealth and a very long life,

And all that he desires would be achieved without any doubt.

 

22. Sarvathra jayam aapnothi, sravathra vijayee bhaveth,

Bhhomyanthareeksha divyaanaam grahaanaam vini varanam.

 

He who desires for victory everywhere would get victory everywhere,

He would ward off all the evils caused by earth, environment and planets.

 

23. Vruschiko raga sambhootha visha apa haranam param,

Brahma Rakshasa yakshaanaam dhoorothsaarana karanam.

This steals away the poison caused by serpents and scorpions,

And Brahma Rakshasas and Yakshas would be driven far- far away.

 

24. Bhurje vaa thala pathre vaa kavacham likhitham shubham,

Kara moole drutham yena sidhyeyu karma sidhaye.

 

If this auspicious armour is written on a palm leaf or bark of a tree, ,

And this is worn in the hand all his actions would be come divine.

 

25. Devasura manushyeshu swam swameva jayam labheth,

Yeka sandhyam trisandhyam vaa ya paden niyatho nara.

 

That man who reads it following all rules, three times,

In the dawn, noon or dusk or one of these times,

Would get victory over humans, devas and Asuras.

 

26. Sarva mangala mangalyam, bhuthim, muykthim cha vindathi,

Dwathrimsad sahasrani padeth shudhatmanaam nrunaam.

 

That holy and pure human being who reads it,

Thirty two thousand times would definitely get,

All auspicious things, wealth and salvation.

27. Kavachayasya manthrasya manthra sidhi prajayathe,

Anena manthra rajena kruthwa bhas mabhi manthranam.

 

If this is chanted along with wearing of ashes, by the help of this,

Mantra of the Kavacha which is the king of mantras, he would get mastery over it.

 

28. Thilakam vinyased yasthu thasya graham bhayam hareth,

Trivare japamanasthu datham varibhya manthrya cha.

 

By wearing a Tilaka and after doing Aachamana with mantras,

If this is chanted for three weeks, , the fear of planets would be removed for him.

 

29. Prasayedhyo naro mantram, nrusimha dhyanamacharedh,

Thasya roga pranasyanthi ye cha syu kukshi sambhavaa.

 

After meditating on Lord Narasinmha, if a man,

Masters this mantra his diseases would be cured,

Including those diseases of the abdomen.

 

30. Kimathra bahu nokthena nrusimha sadruso bhaveth,

Manasa chinthitham yathu sa thachapnothya samsayam.

Which other great one can ever become like Narasimha,

For just thinking about him in mind would make him your own without doubt.

 

31. Garjantham garjayantham nija bhuja patalam sphotayantham hatantham,

Roopyantham thapayantham dhivi bhuvi dhithijam kshopayantham kshipantham,

Kranthantham roshayantham disi disi sathatham samharantham bharantham,

Vikshantham ghoornayantham sara nikara sathair divya simham namami.

 

He roars and makes us roar, He with his many arms tears and throws them out,

He searches and troubles the sons of Dhithi in this and other worlds,

Throws them and scatters them and when angry he kills them from all directions,

And when he sees them he tears them apart with his hundreds of divine hands,

And I salute him who has manifested himself as a divine lion.

 

Ithi Sri Brahmanda purane prahalodhoktham nrusimha kavacham sampoornam

 

Thus ends the armour of Narasimha told by Prahlada found in Brahmanda Purana.

udaya—rising; ravi—suns; sahasra—thousands; dyotitam—splendid; ruksha—angry; viksham—glance; pralaya—of devastation; jaladhi—ocean; nadam—sound; kalpa—kalpa; krit—doing; vahni—fire; vaktram—mouth; sura—of the demigods; pati—of the king; ripu—of the enemy; vakshah—the chest; cheda—breaking; rakta—with blood; ukshita—sprinkled; angam—limbs; praëata—of the surrendered souls; bhaya—the fears; haram—removing; tam—to Him; narasimham—Lord Nrisimha; namami—I bow down.

 

I bow down before Lord Nrisimha, who is splendid like thousands of rising suns, whose eyes are filled with anger, whose roar is like the roaring of the ocean at the time of the universe's destruction, whose face is like the blazing fires at the end of the kalpa, whose limbs are sprinkled with blood from the broken chest of Indra's enemy, and who removes the fears of His surrendered devotees.

pralaya—destruction; ravi—sun; karala—fearsome; akara—form; ruk—of light; cakra-valamcircle; virala-yad-uru-roci—great splendor; rocita—illuminated; ashantarala—the directions; prati-bhayatama—great fear; kopa—anger; aty-utkaöoccaööa-hasin—with loud laughter; daha—burn; daha—burn; narasimha—O Lord Nrisimha; asahya—invincible; vira—power; ahitam—inauspicious; me—of me.

 

O Lord whose splendor fills the directions with light, O Lord effulgent like the sun at the time of the universe's destruction, O invincible, all powerful Lord whose loud and angry

laughter fills the demons with fear, O invincible, all-powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

sarasa-rabhasa-padapata-bharabhirava-

pracakita-cala-sapta-dvandva-loka-stutas tvam

ripu-rudhira-nishekeëaiva shoëanghri-shalin

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

sarasa—passionate; rabhasa—violent; pada—feet; apata—falling; bhara—burden; abhirava—by the sound; pracakita—frightened; cala—going; sapta-dvandva-loka-stutah—to the fourteen worlds; tvam—You; ripu—enemy's; rudhira—blood; nishekeëa—by the shower; eva—indeed; shoëa—red; anghri—feet; shalin—possessing.

 

O Lord the sounds of whose passionate footsteps make the demons flee to the fourteen worlds, O Lord whose feet are reddened by the shower of Your enemy's blood, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

tava ghana-ghana-ghosho ghoram aghraya jangha-

parigham alaghum uru-vyaja-tejo-girim ca

ghana-vighaöitam agad daitya-janghalasangho

tava—Your; ghana-ghana-ghoshah—thunder of many clouds; ghoram—horrible; aghraya—smelling; jangha—legs; parigham—iron rod; alaghum—thick; uru—thighs; vyaja—seeming; tejah—of light; girim—mountain; ca—also; ghana-vighaöitam—to the sky; agat—far away; daitya-janghala-sagdhah—the multitude of fleeing demons.

 

O Lord, when they perceive the slightest scent of the iron mace that is Your legs or the mountain of light that is Your thighs, the demons, screaming like thunder, flee into the sky. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

kaöaki-kaöaka-rajad-dhatakagrya-sthalabha

prakaöa-paöa-taöit te sat-kaöi-sthati-paövi

kaöuka-kaöuka-dushöaöopa-drishöi-pramushöau

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

kaöaki—thighs; kaöaka—mountain; rajad-shining; hataka—golden; agrya-sthala—peak; abha—splendor; prakaöa—manifested; paöa—garments; taöit—lightning bolt; te—of You; sat-kaöi-stha—styaing on the hips; ati-paövi—very expert; kaöuka-kaöuka—hardest of the hard; dushöa—of the demons; aöopa—bewildered; drishöi—eyes; pramushöau—robbing.

 

O Lord, the golden effulgence of the mountain peak that is Your hips, a mountain peak clothed in the lightning flashes of Your yellow garments, has robbed the harsh and angry demons of their eyes. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

prakhara—sharp; nakhara—claws; vajra—thunderbolt; utkhata—ripped apart; ruksha—hard; ari—of theenemy; vakshah—the chest; shikhari-shikhara—mountain peak; raktaih—with blood; akta—anointed; sandoha-deha—torso; su-balibha—with three folds of skin; shubha—glorious; kukshe—belly; bhadra—graceful; gambhira—deep; nabhe—navel.

 

O Lord, Your abdomen, with its handsome lines of tri-bali and its deep and graceful navel, is now anointed with blood from the mountain peak of Your enemy's hard chest, now ripped apart by Your sharp nails. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

sphurayati—manifests; tava—Your; sakshat—directly; sa—that; eva—indeed; nakshatra-mala—stars; kshapita—destroyed; ditija—demon's; vakshah—chest; vyapta—maniefsted; nakshatra-margam—the pathway of the stars (the sky); ari—cakra; dara—and conchshell; dhara—holding; janu—to the knees; asakta—reaching; hasta-dvaya—hands; ahah—Oh!

 

O Lord who hold the disc and conchshell, O Lord whose hands reach to Your knees, O Lord who made a garland of stars shine in the sky of the defeated demon's chest. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

kaöu-vikaöa-saöaughodghaööanad bhrashöa-bhuyo-

ghana-paöala-vishalakasha-labdhavakasham

kara-parigha-vimarda-prodyamam dhyayatas te

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

kaöu—sharp; vikaöa—expanded; saöa—mane; augha—flood; udghaööanat—from the attack; bhrashöa—fallen; bhuyah—many; ghana—-paöala—multitudes of clouds; vishala—great; akasha—sky; labdha—obtained; avakasham—opportunity; kara—of the hands; parigha—the iron maces; vimarda-prodyamam—struck by the blows; dhyayatah—meditating; te—they.

 

O Lord whose great mane made many clouds fall from the sky, O Lord whose hands are formidable iron maces, I meditate on You. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

haöha—violent; luöhat—moving; alaghishöha—thick; utkaëöha—neck; dashöa—bitten; oshöha—lips; vidyut—lightning; saöa—mane; shaöha—of the demon; kaöhina—hard; urah-piöha—chest; bhit—breaking; sushöhu—greatly; nishöham—faith; paöati—recites; tu—indeed; tava—of You; kaëöha—on the neck; adhishöha—placed; ghora—horrible; antra—of entrails; mala—garland.

 

O Lord, Your thick neck is turned to Your vicious enemy. You bite Your lips in anger. Your mane is like lightning. You eagerly rip apart the demon's chest. The horrible necklace of entrails around Your neck recites eloquent prayers glorifying You. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

hata-bahu-mihirabhasahya-samhara-ramho

huta-vaha-bahu-heti-hreshitananta-heti

ahita-vihita-moham samvahan saimham asyam

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

hata—defeated; bahu—many; mihira—suns; abha—splendor; asahya—unbearable; samhara—destruction; ramhah—violence; huta—offered; vaha—fire; bahu—many; heti—flames; hreshita—roars; ananta—limitless; heti—splendor; ahita—to the enemies; vihita—given; moham—bewilderment; samvahan—carrying; saimham—of a lion; asyam—the face.

 

O Lord whose invincible violent power is more brilliant than a host of suns, O Lord whose roaring burns greater than a host of fires, O Lord whose lion face bewilders Your enemies, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

guru-guru-giri-rajat-kandarantar-gate va

dinamaëi-maëi-shringe vanta-vahni-pradipte

dadhad-ati-kaöu-damshöre bhishaëojjihva-vaktre

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

guru—great; guru—greatest; giri—mountain; rajat—shining; kandara—cave; antah—within; gate—gone; va—or; dinamaëi-maëi—of suryakanta jewels; shringe—on the summit; va—or; anta—at the end of the cosmos; vahni—fire; pradipte—shining; dadhat—manifesting; ati—very; kaöu—sharp; damshöre—teeth; bhishaëa—frightening; ujjihva—with tongue; vaktre—mouth.

 

Lord, with its very sharp teeth and fearful tongue, Your gaping mouth is like the greatest of splendid mountain caves, or like a mountain peak of suryakanta jewels, or like the blazing fire that destroys the universe. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

adharita-vibudhabdhi-dhyana-dhairyam vididhyad

vividha-vibudha-dhi-sraddhapitendrari-nasham

vidadhad-ati-kaöahodghaööaneddhaööa-hasam

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

adharita—entered; vibudha—of the demiogds; abdhi—the ocean; dhyana—of meditation; dhairyam—steadiness; vididhyat—shining; vividha—various; vibudha—of the demigods; dhi—intelligence; sraddhapita—concluded; indra—of Indra; ari—of the enemies; nasham—destruction; vidadhat—placing; ati—very; kaöaaha—universe; udghaööana—shaking; iddha—expanded; aööa—raised; hasam—laughter.

 

O Lord, Your loud and shrill laughter shakes the universe and agitates the peaceful ocean of the demigods' meditations. The demigods trust that this laughter means the death of Indra's enemies. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

tri-bhuvana-triëa-matra-traëa-trishëam tu netra-

trayam ati-laghitarcir-vishöapavishöa-padam

navatara-ravi-tamram dharayan ruksha-viksham

tri—three; bhuvana—worlds; triëa—a blade of grass; matra—only; traëa—protection; trishëam—thirst; tu—indeed; netra—eyes; trayam—three; ati—very; laghita—light; arcih—of light; vishöapa—places; avishöa—entered; padam—parts; navatara—new; ravi—sun; tamram—red; dharayan—manifesting; ruksha—angry; viksham—glance.

 

O Lord, red like the rising sun, Your three angry eyes make all brilliant things in this world seem dim by comparison. Those eyes thirst to protect the blade of straw that is the three worlds. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

bhramad-abhibhava-bhubhrid-bhuri-bhu-bhara-sadbhid-

bhid-abhinava-vida-bhru-vibhramadabhra-shubhra

ribhu-bhava-bhaya-bhettar bhasi bho bho vibhabhir

daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

 

bhramat—illusions; abhibhava—defeat; bhu—the world; bhrit—maintaining; bhuri—great; bhu—of the earth; bhara—burden; sat—the saintly devotees; bhit—of they who harm; bhit—destruction; abhinava—new; vida-bhru-vibhrama—moving of the eyebrows; adabhra—great; shubhra—splendor; ribhu—of the demigods; bhava—of continued material existence; bhaya—fear; bhettah—breaking; bhasi—You shine; bhah—Oh; bhah—Oh; vibhabhih—with splendors.

 

O Lord, the knitting of Your eyebrows is glorious without limit. Those eternally new movements defeat illusions, maintain the worlds, remove the burden of the worlds, and kill they who would harm Your devotees. tad-akhila-gurum agrya-shrida-rupa lasadbhih

su-niyama-naya-krityaih sad-guëair nitya-yukta

 

stutih—prayer; iyam—this; ahita—what is inauspicious; ghni—destroying; sevita—served; narasimhi—to Lord Nrisimha; tanuh—form; iva—like; parishanta—peaceful; malini—in the meter malini; sa—that; abhitah—completely; alam—greatly; tad-akhila-gurum—the best of all; agrya—exalted; shrida-rupa—glorious; lasadbhih—shining; su-niyama-naya-krityaih—with beautiful feet; sad-guëaih—glorious; nitya—always; yukta—endowed.

This glorious prayer in the shanta-rasa, is like the form of Lord Nrisimha Himself. It is beautifully written with graceful long and short syllables in the meter malini. Note: The meter malini is this: uuuuuu---u--u--.

likuca—in the family of Trivikrama Paëdita; tilaka—tilaka marking; sunuh—son; sat—of the devotees; hita—welfare; artha—for the sake; anusari—following; narahari—to Lord Nrisimha; nutim—prayer; etam—this; shatru—of enemies; samhara—destruction; hetum—for the purpose; akrita—wrote; sakala—all; papa—sins; dhvamsinim—destroying; yah—a person who; paöhet—recites; tam—this; vrajati—goes; nriharilokam—to the planet of Lord Nrisimha; kama-lobhady-asaktah—free from lust, greed, and other vices.

 

Wishing the welfare of the Lord's devotees, Narayaëa Paëdita, who is the tilaka marking in the family of Trivikrama Paëdita, has written these prayers glorifying Lord Nrisimha, prayers that vanquish enemies and destroy all sins. A person free from lust, greed, and other vices who recites this prayer goes to the spiritual realm of Lord Nrisimha.
