CEENGINE User Database 1.0
What are the users? What are their legal names and contact data? Where are they located (geographically and
logically)? What are their research interests, do they have
partners in CEENGINE region and in Europe? How do they participate in ERA, do they plan to do
so, if yes – in which areas? Do they use (or plan to use) GEANT Network?

Key findings – 1 of 2
The region is underdeveloped in the applied sciences which demand high technology and expensive equipment for research
http://www.ceengine.eu
The research, although declared as national priority, is in crisis for lack of financing and re-structuring
![Page 18: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Key findings – 2 of 2
University model of research is under development – from pure education to mixed – “education & research” model
http://www.ceengine.eu
“National research network” is quite often understood as the network of academies of sciences
A university may have connectivity to several providers and even no research network
![Page 19: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Fields of Related Research
Computer Sciences - GRID systems, high-performance computers,
Physics - new materials, high energy, and Nano-technology
Astronomy and observatories
Geology and seismology - seismic active regions of southeastern Europe

Research partnership
NREN Power Users are EU-centric in their international research collaboration utilizing their long-term relations with research teams from the countries like Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Czech, Hungary
http://www.ceengine.eu
![Page 21: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Research power
Research institutions from the region have capacity to partner with EU partners, but hardly can assume leadership in projects or activities
http://www.ceengine.eu
![Page 22: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Connectivity
Non-GEANT connected usually suffer from low quality of connection but are concerned about the costs of GEANT
http://www.ceengine.eu
NREN Power Users refer to the GEANT as a good opportunity for collaboration with European partners, rather than essential for their research and practice
Education is eager for more educational content and services such as distance learning, video-conferencing, and others
![Page 23: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)

Conclusions
The other research areas are also demonstrating growing demand for collaborative services and should be considered in future
http://www.ceengine.eu
The GEANT services demand centralization at national level so no other entities but NRENs can meet this challenge
NRENs need specific regional approach and understanding the problems and needs of the region as a whole!
![Page 26: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Summary
The best adoption of GEANT network and services in the region can be achieved by orchestrating a set of activities leading to integration of research institutions from the targeted region into EU research projects
http://www.ceengine.eu
Only intensified collaboration with EU partners can increase the demand for GEANT and its services in the region, in opposition to the approach where the NRENs must procure rather costly and virtually not-used connectivity to GEANT
![Page 27: NREN Users in Eastern Europe CEENGINE Work Package #2 Dr. Krasimir Simonski – Chair of CEENet](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56814489550346895db120b5/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
