Monica DeBie and Smokin Mister Sister Win 2010 NRCHA Snaffle
Bit Futurity Limited Open Hackamore/Ralls Marks High Score of
Open Hackamore Prelims
Monica DeBie and Smokin Mister Sister marked a 428.5 composite to win
the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open
Hackamore on Wednesday, September 29.
By Mister Dual Pep and out of Miss Smoking Remedy, "Sister" is owned by
John Pascoe of Irvine, California, and was shown by John Ward in the 2009
NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, but didn't make it back to the finals.
"She just needed a little more maturing," said DeBie, who has worked at the
Ward Ranch for about three years. "She's a very talented mare and very laid back
and easy going."
The pair marked a 213 in rein work and a 215.5 in the cow work. "She was
really good in the circles but they said I was way too soft in my first rundown. She
spun around well and both stops were nice. She was really good," DeBie
said of the rein work, adding that her cow work was an amazing ride. "She boxed
really well but the cow didn't move around a lot so John Ward told me to go ahead
and go. She left off the fence, ran up there and turned it and she's so strong she
jumped up there and turned it again and just went right into the circles running hard
as she could. She did everything she could for me."
Along with a check for $2,184, the Limited Open Hackamore title came with
a Gist Silversmiths buckle courtesy of Murray Thompson, a C.R. Morrison NRCHA
trophy, a horsehair mecate from Krause Mecates, a Cinch monogrammed vest
from Bob's Custom Saddles, Platinum Performance, and a C.R. Morrison
commemorative medallion.
In Reserve was Will Pennebaker on Betsy Kienle's Oakinic (Short Oak x
Just Sugari). Marking a 427.5, the pair earned $1,716, a horsehair mecate from
Krause Mecates, a Cinch monogrammed vest from Bob's Custom Saddles,
Platinum Performance, and a C.R. Morrison commemorative medallion.
Marking the highest combined score in the Open Hackamore preliminaries
was Ron Ralls on CD Dee Vee Dee with a 439.5. By CD Lights and out of Shiners
Missy Jay, CD Dee Vee Dee is owned by Shannon and Hershel Reid of Pilot Point,
Texas. The thirteen riders who marked at least a 430.5 will return to the Open
Hackamore Finals on Saturday, October 2.

NRCHA Judges Committee Members Give Tips to Non Pros
Carl Gould, Lyn Anderson and Darren Miller, members of the NRCHA
Judges Committee, offered advice for Non Pros on how to improve their cow work
during a free seminar on Wednesday, September 29, in the Best of the West Trade
Show. The three analyzed runs from a DVD, highlighting what was done wrong and
right and what could have been done to improve the runs.
Gould will present a second judging seminar at 1 p.m. Thursday, September
30, geared towards trainers and open riders. And stick around for another seminar
at 3 p.m. by NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Anne Reynolds on mental focus during
competition. Both will be in the Best of the West Trade Show.

NRCHYA Hosts Steer Daubing Competition
The National Reined Cow Horse Youth Association hosted the First Annual Steer Daubing competition on Wednesday, September 29. A $20 entry fee was all it took to compete - and more than 50 runs were made. The Steer Daubing earned the Youth association almost $500.
In the end, it was Jason Gay who won the Steer Daubing Championship, stopping the clock with a 2.26. He received $240 for the win. Justin Lawrence was second, pocketing $132, while Todd Bergen took third place honors and $88.
The NRCHYA also presented prizes made possible by support from Gonzales Bits and Spurs; Roo-Hide Saddlery; Thrifty Horse Consignment Shop; and the NRCHA Store.
NRCHYA Vice President Walker Pozzi noted, "We thank all of our help,
including Pat Russell, Cecil Hillerman, Frank Mello, Bill Mello, Jim Spence, Dean McCann, and Kris Troxel. We appreciate everyone who came out and supported our Youth association. We plan to have the Steer Daubing again next year, and invite everyone to come out and join us."
The First Annual NRCHYA Steer Daubing drew over 50 entries and earned nearly $500 for the Youth association.
Finalists Have Fun at 2010 Merial Finals Draw Party
For the fourth year in a row NRCHA Corporate Partner Merial showed its
support of the reined cow horse industry by sponsoring the Snaffle Bit Futurity
Finals Draw Party. The Finals Draw Party was, as always, a huge event, with
owners, exhibitors, family, and friends all gathering to enjoy the camaraderie and
excitement.
During the Draw Party, each Snaffle Bit Futurity Finalist was called up one-
by-one to hand-draw their Finals Position in front of the crowd. The excitement was
contagious, with other participants cheering when a great position was drawn, or
commiserating when a dreaded number got picked.
The Finals Draw Party moved to a new venue for 2010 - the Poolside
Terrace of John Ascuaga's Nugget Hotel and Casino. Mr. John Ascuaga attended
the party and mingled with the attendees.
The Poolside Terrace at John Ascuaga's Nugget was the perfect location for
the Merial Finals Draw Party.
