Reading Camps

There are 850 000 children between 0 and 9 years in Mpumalanga that require adequate instruction in

Literacy & Numeracy.

Penreach Reading Camps are run by trained community volunteers. Each camp (essentially a club) receives a Penreach Book Bank, teaching aids and stationery. Children attend sessions at least once a week for two-hours. There are currently 87 Reading Camps attended by over 4 000 children on a weekly basis. Reading Buddies pairs older learner volunteers from the same community, with younger children in structured groups with assigned timeframes. Reading Buddies meet on a bi-weekly basis for one-on-one or group reading activities. Penreach Book Banks comprise of English & SiSwati readers and Big Books, a variety of donated storybooks, and a computer tablet with access to reading material through our partner organisations such as Nal’ibali. These are available to school and other community organisations.

South African Electric Vehicle Challenge

Manganese Metal Company | MMC

Penreach once again took part in the South African Electric Vehicle Challenge held at the Mbombela Stadium racetrack on 21 May, as part of its Science enrichment programme. Penreach fielded three teams, comprising Mayibuye, Mandlesive and Mhlume- all Penreach target schools. This would not be possible without the sponsorship, for the 6th year running, by Manganese Metal Company, MMC. The Electric Vehicle Challenge is an annual event organised by the Rotary Project, to expose learners to scientific and engineering concepts as well as nurture innovation and creativity. In addition to soft skills gained such as problem solving and teamwork, learners also acquire practical skills such as welding.

“Penreach is a true nation builder and our school is honoured to be a part of this wonderful family”.

Mr Mdaka (Principal of Mhlume Secondary School)

Toy Libraries

Halls | Riverside Park

The first Penreach Toy Library in Msholozi A was erected at Khula Khula Day Care and allows over 400 children and their caregivers’ access to a range of educational toys and books. This opportunity for households to receive toys, and to regularly exchange these, has proven a great success in terms of child development. When the second toy library was opened to the community at Gugulethu daycare centre on May 18, the excitement of caregivers, children, local schools, community leaders and pre-schools was evident.

Activity Day at the Umphakatsi Toy Library The activity days are for the children, caregivers, practitioners and NCBPs. The recent activity day was a success, our theme was “Painting is Fun”. The children were given 8 different activities to enjoy, like finger painting, string painting, sponge painting, straw painting, the caregivers assisted with the activities for the day for their children.

Non-Centre Based Practitioner (NCBP) Lindiwe Maseko shares, “ I love my job and I am happy as I can give help to people who need help, I want to thank Penreach as I also learn. I can now understand what children need and I can give them this.”
