NPRA Safety Awards Program

The presentation of the NPRA Safety Awardplaques is part of a comprehensive safetyawards program which the Association’sSafety & Health Committee has developedto promote accident prevention in the petro-leum refining, petrochemical manufacturing,and contracting industries and to publiclyrecognize the excellent record of safety inoperations which the industries and contrac-tors have achieved.

NPRA Safety Awards are based on recordskept for employees in accordance withOSHA record keeping requirements asdefined by law and entered on the OSHA300A summary form.

The Safety Awards Program honors NPRARegular member companies operating U.S.refineries and petrochemical manufacturingplants as well as Associate member contrac-tors working in those facilities. The programconsists of the following awards.

Awards

Distinguished Safety Award

The NPRA Distinguished Safety Award,(DSA) NPRA’s most prestigious award,recognizes those member companyrefineries and petrochemical plants thathave attained a superior level of safetyperformance in the domestic refining andpetrochemical manufacturing industries.Recipients are chosen by a selectioncommittee represented by members ofthe NPRA Safety & Health Committee. Itis the selection committee’s responsibilityto carefully examine the safety perform-ance records of individual plant locationsusing the specific screening and selec-tion criteria detailed below.

Screening CriteriaIn order to qualify for the DSA, a facilitymust first pass the screening criteria asdescribed below:

1. A location must achieve an employeetotal recordable incidence rate of 0.6or less and no employee lost workdaycases involving days away from workfor the evaluation period.

2.A location must achieve a contractortotal recordable incidence rate of 0.6or less and no contractor lost workdaycases involving days away from workfor the evaluation period.

3.A location must have had no employeeworkplace related fatalities and no non-employee (contractor, visitor, etc.)workplace related fatalities for two consecutive evaluation periods.

Selection CriteriaAfter passing the above screening crite-ria, the candidate facility’s overall safetyperformance record will be evaluated bythe Selection Committee considering thefollowing selection criteria:

1. Overall performance history showingeither continuously good safety or asteady improvement over three (3) consecutive evaluation periods.

2.Outstanding performance based onnumber of hours or years worked with-out a lost workday case involving daysaway from work.

3.Brief written application detailingspecifics of the candidate location’s safety program.

Meritorious SafetyPerformance Award

This award recognizes facilities whichhave achieved a total recordable incidence rate of 1.0 or less with no workplace related fatality of an employeeor non-employee during 2009.

Gold Award

The Gold Award is awarded to thosefacilities which have achieved a 25% orgreater reduction in the total recordableincidence rate with no workplace relatedfatality of an employee or non-employeeduring 2009, as compared to the averagetotal recordable incidence rates for thethree previous calendar years.

Award for Safety Achievement1,000,000+ Employee Hours

This award acknowledges facilities foroperating one million or more employeehours without an employee lost workdaycase involving days away from work andwithout a workplace related fatality of anemployee or non-employee during theevaluation period.

Award for Safety Achievement1+ Years

This award acknowledges facilities foroperating one or more years without anemployee lost workday case involvingdays away from work and without a workplace related fatality of an employeeor non-employee during the evaluationperiod.

Contractor Award forMeritorious SafetyPerformance

This award recognizes those contractorsworking a minimum of 20,000 hours percalendar year at a Regular member facility who have achieved a total record-able incidence rate of 1.0 or less with noworkplace related fatality during 2009.
