Now that USALEEP has leaped...
…Reflections on collaboration and ongoing
opportunities for innovation
Origins
‘What is one measure that
encapsulates the health of
communities, can be
calculated at the community
level, and could be available
for the entire country?’
-Mr. Donald Schwarz, RWJF
USALEEP
Origins
USALEEP: United States Small-Area Life Expectancy
Estimates Project
A joint effort of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC); the National Association for Public
Health Information Systems (NAPHSIS); and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation
Designed to be the first universal measure of health at the neighborhood
level, to promote conversations at the hyper-local level about resource
allocation and health equity, and allocate resources where they may be
most needed in order to support healthier, more equitable communities
Development
‘How do we obtain data never
before collected at the
national level, and compute
measures never before
computed nationwide at the
community level?’
-Most everyone

Future of USALEEP
•Efforts to fill in the
gaps of the USALEEP
data coverage
•Ongoing development
of national, state, and
local resources to
improve access to
USALEEP data and
supporting tools
Access to Data01•RWJF and Urban
Institute partnership to
fund opportunities to
visualize and put
USLEEP data to work
•Exchange of ideas and
methods at
international level
Innovation02•NCHS has funding to collect 2018
and 2019 address data, with an eye
toward eventually collecting 2020-
2022 addresses, allowing life
expectancy estimates to be updated
based on a new 5 years of mortality
data centered on the 2020 census.
