Welcome to “Girls’ Weekend.” This script is not yet published, so you may be wondering how we are producing it at ACT. While at the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) national festival in Grand Rapids, MI in June, I was talking with some other theater professionals, asking them to suggest shows for women. “Girls’ Weekend” was suggested by people who had been involved with the original production at the Des Moines Playhouse and know the author, Karen Schaeffer. After making contact, I got a script sent to me online, read it and liked it because it had strong female characters and was a comedy/farce written from the female perspective. Historically, most farces have been written by men and from the male point of view.

Long story short, Karen agreed to let us produce the play. And I think everyone has had a good time putting the production together. Karen and her husband, Max, will actually be here for the Friday evening performance during our run and we will have an informal meet and greet after the show that night. So, if you’re reading this on Friday night, join us after the show. I want to thank Karen and Max for all their help as we have mounted “Girls’ Weekend.” It has been a fun show to end our 2015 regular season.

We do have a special additional production coming in November, “A Christmas Story, the

Musical.” It will be another combined musical production with Northern State University as the Johnson Fine Arts Center is undergoing its transformation. It has been cast and will begin rehearsals next week. See below for more information. It is not a part of your season subscription, but you still get special pricing and can purchase tickets early (October 13th) before the box office opens to the public on October 19th. Don’t wait, get your seats right away.

As we close the 2015 season, I want to thank you all for attending “Girls’ Weekend” and all of the 2015 season productions. We can only keep live theater going with your help and patronage.

I also would like to thank Riddle’s Jewelry in the Aberdeen Mall for being the new box office location for ACT. Brent Reisenauer and the staff at Riddle’s have done a great job with the box office for their first show and they are going to keep at it for “A Christmas Story, the Musical” in November. I have had several people comment on the extended box office hours. With Riddle’s Jewelry, we have the best box office hours we’ve ever had. Thanks again to Brent and all the staff at Riddle’s Jewelry.

Once again, word-of-mouth is the best advertising, so if you enjoy this performance tell your friends. See you at “A Christmas Story, the Musical” in November.

JAMES L. WALKER

SLORI HARMEL (Meg), a 27-year veteran of ACT, has recently appeared as Becky in ACT’s “Becky’s New Car” (2013) and as Katherine Krupnik in YPT’s “Anastasia Krupnik.” She also received an Outstanding Actress Award at the 2015 Region V AACTFest for her performance in ACT’s “Working.” Lori enjoys volunteering in all aspects of community theater and is married to Matthew, a fellow ACT veteran. They have two children, Gabriel and Jillian.

PAULETTE CALLEN (Dot) has retired to her home state after 40 years in Manhattan, where she studied acting (principally with Herbert Berghof), wrote, and supported her writing/acting habits with a variety of jobs. Her acting history (none of it recent!) includes graduate work in theatre, summer stock, Dudley Riggs, and community theaters in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

MINDY EGGERS (Carol) is making her ACT debut with “Girls’ Weekend.” She is a local artist and owner of Cherry Pics Photography. She recently relocated back to Aberdeen with her husband, Josh, and two children, Olive and Stein.

ISABELLA SEATON (Ellie) just graduated from Macalester College with a B.A. in English Literature and is happy to return to ACT’s stage. She has been in the SBLT season cast for the last 6 seasons. She was last seen in ACT’s “Eleemosynary” (2010).

BRIAN T. SCHULTZ (Rick/set and light design/technical director) resides in Aberdeen with wife, Juli, and two daughters. He is also ACT’s education director and SBLT’s director. Schultz received Best Supporting Actor at the AACT 2009 national festival for his role as Russ Renner in ACT’s “How to Talk Minnesotan: The Musical” and Comprehensive Creativity in the 2013 AACT Region V festival for his work on “The Top Job!” After winning first place in the 2015 South Dakota State Chili Cook-Off, he is considering competing in the World Chili Cook-Off in Reno, NV this October.

ELIOT LUCAS (Stephen) is a graphic designer at McQuillen Creative Group. He was last seen as Michael Novak in ACT’s “God of Carnage” (2014). He recieved an Outstanding Supporting Actor Award for his performance in ACT’s “Perfectly Normal and Healthy” at the 2011 AACT Region V festival.

JACOB WOMACK (Bubba) is a senior at Aberdeen Central High School and 17 years old. Before moving to Aberdeen in 2010, he had never been involved in any theater or film productions. Now, he has been in five ACT mainstage shows, in the season cast for Storybook Land Theatre for two years and won first place at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in June.

JAMES L. WALKER (artistic/managing director) is an Aberdeen native. He has acted, directed and adjudicated professionally for more than 30 years and has been ACT’s artistic/managing director for 28 years. He has earned numerous directing and scenic design awards. Jim was appointed by the governor to the South Dakota Arts Council in 2008 and currently serves as vice-chair. Jim is also a member of the national board of directors of the American Association of Community Theatre. In June, he received the prestigious AACT Fellow Award.

HEIDI HEPOLA (technical assistant) a Watertown native, started with ACT May 2010 with set construction for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” She received a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Theatre and a minor in Chinese Studies from the University of North Dakota and has been on the staff of the Huron (Ohio) Playhouse, Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival, Skylight Opera Theatre in Milwaukee, WI and the Des Moines Metro Opera.

MARILYN BURCKHARD (assistant director/stage manager) is originally from Polo, SD, and moved to Aberdeen after graduating high school.
