The many schools in the Parish that takepart in the Jersey Eisteddfod's AutumnFestival will be practising theirperformances in advance of the threeweeks of competition that get underwayin the Jersey Opera House on Wednesday7th November, while the modernlanguage competitions will be taking placein the Town Hall. The schools will also bebusy with Christmas plays and concerts,

Welcome to the November edition of the Town Crier. As the schools go back after half term the Red CrossPoppy Appeal moves into top gear, with the Island's act of remembrance of past and present sacrifices bymembers of the armed forces culminating in the service at the Cenotaph on Sunday 11th November. The Rollof Honour, an initiative of the Town Centre Manager, will be back in De Gruchy’s shop window in the precinctfrom 5th November, and the Chelsea Pensioners will be welcomed back to town.

Like the Battle of Flowers, the Jersey Eisteddfod is part of what makes Jersey special, and over more than acentury it has had an invaluable role in enriching the lives of Islanders by helping to develop their artisticside. The autumn festival is the ideal opportunity for young musicians to get used to performing in public, and for older - and in some cases, lapsed - performers to dust off their musical instrument, or try their handat doing some acting or reciting a modern language.

Welcome to the Town Crier

and with so much going on for familieswith children it's just as well there areplenty of opportunities for sorting outpresents during late-night shopping, withthe beginning of the Fête dé Noué and theswitching on of the Christmas Lights onThursday 29th November at 6pm by MissSt Helier. This month sees a return of a Polish

column being penned by local teacher,

Vlada Mayo, so the Town Crier now offersmonthly articles for parishioners eager todevelop their language skills in Jèrriais,French and Polish. A regular contributorof a column in Portuguese is needed, however! To contact the editorial team,

please call 811821 or [email protected].

In the current economic climate the Jersey Eisteddfod isparticularly indebted to its sponsors, Deutsche Bank and theJersey Arts Trust, for their continued support of the festival. Atthe same time it was reported at this year's Annual GeneralMeeting that the Eisteddfod's reserves are being depleted eachyear, so any fund raising initiatives that performers, teachers orparents can put into action between now and next year's SpringFestival would be most welcome. After all, if a particularperformance went well, wouldn't it be a good idea to repeat it,together with some friends' efforts, at a fundraiser in yourChurch or School Hall! Please contact the Administrator (tel:854529, email: [email protected]), if youwould like to get involved in fundraising activities, thus helping toensure that our Eisteddfod has a financially sustainable future.

The 88th Jersey Eisteddfod gets underway onWednesday 7th November at the Opera House with themusic classes, including school choirs andinstrumentalists, with a Gala Evening on Saturday 17th.The dance section starts on Monday 19th with a galanight on Saturday 24th, while the Speech and Dramasection occupies the final week, from Monday 26thNovember to the Gala Night on Saturday1st December. There are also classes in modern languages and Jèrriais.Tickets for most of the sessions cost just £2 available atthe door, although for the three Galas it’s advisable tobook in advance.

Lillie Langtry is set to make a welcome return to St Saviour at the talented hands of internationally-acclaimed sculptor, James Butler MBE, , WA, FRBS. She will be located at Langtry Gardens, a new development of 2 and 3 bedroom traditional-style co ages.

Depicted at the height of her beauty, Butler has created a life-sized model of ‘ e Jersey Lily’ as a ing tribute to the woman who, despite leading a cosmopolitan and exciting life in Europe and America, le instructions for her nal resting place to be in the church of her childhood, St Saviour.

LANGTRY GARDENSLillie Langtry is set to grace the development, speci cally designed for home-owners seeking to downsize and Sadie Rennard, the Parish Connétable, thinks it is absolutely fantastic for the whole community.

“I am so delighted”, Sadie enthused, “as this means people who have been brought up here in St Saviour and want a smaller home but don’t want to have to move away, can actually stay in the parish.

“Langtry Gardens is blessed with a choice of accommodation that can be adapted to suit speci c needs and lifestyles and I really think that everything has been done that could be to cater for them.

“For example some homes have a huge master bedroom and bathroom that completely takes up

the whole of the rst oor as well as a wet room downstairs with a downstairs bedroom. It’s all the li le details.”

Sadie was also delighted with the name connection with Lillie Langtry.

“I think it’s really ing” she said, “Lillie Langtry always retained her links with St Saviour right to the end, and that’s what our parishioners will be able to do.”

e sculpture will be a prominent feature leading from Langtry Gardens to a prestigious community centre which is an integral part of the design by award winning architect, Professor Robert Adams.

With his design Adams has created a visually-appealing collection of traditional-style co ages arranged around a central landscaped courtyard to the front, but with private gardens to the rear. Striking cream render is topped with deep red, clay tiled roofs to create lovely street scenes and a relaxing, peaceful environment.

Once inside, the focus is on good-sized rooms designed to be used and enjoyed. Some also feature beautiful garden rooms, ensuring the outside can be enjoyed from within all year round.

Sadie is particularly pleased with the design elements .

“Everything that has been included has a genuine purpose”, she explained, “and won’t go to waste.

“We’re so pleased that Dandara have created this development because they always enhance whatever they do. For example, we were so pleased with the sculptor they have used, you just know it’s going to be superb.”

ABOUT THE SCULPTOR - JAMES BUTLERBorn in London in 1931, James Butler studied at Maidstone School of Art, St Martin’s School of Art in London and the Royal College of Art.

James was rst elected a member of the royal Academy of Arts in 1964 and is a member of the royal West of England Academy (R.W.A), Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors (F.R.B.S.) and a Member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors.

He became a full-time sculptor in 1972 a er undertaking an extraordinarily successful commission to create a 12 foot portrait statue of President Jomo Kenya a.

Some of his major works can be seen in London. ese included the Fleet Air Arm Memorial (Daedalus), Victoria Embankment Gardens and Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis - Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk.

LILLIE LANGTRYLillie Langtry (née Emillie Charlo e Le Breton) was born on 13th October 1853. Her father was the Dean at St Saviour.

In 1874 Emillie married Irish landowner Edward Langtry and became an actress a few years later.

Lillie Langtry was a society beauty who became a mistress to the Prince of Wales. According to her biography, other lovers were Robert Peel and George Baird. Her friends included Oscar Wilde and American artist James McNeill Whistler.

On August 13, 1888, Lillie was travelling with New York City millionaire Frederic Gebhard when there was a train accident. Fourteen of their seventeen racehorses were killed. One of the surviving horses was named St Saviour.

Not only is the plaque little-remarked, it seems that the tragic eventsof 1918 have left little trace in our idea of our own history. Therewere over 300 deaths from influenza in Jersey in the space of sixweeks. For comparison, during those weeks the Armistice brought anend to the fighting of the First World War, and Jersey's roll of war deadwas at that time understood to total862.In looking at Jersey newspapers

from November 1918, it is strikinghow little attention was paid to theend of the Great War. One reason isthat the newspapers themselves hadbeen dramatically affected by theepidemic. Les Chroniques de Jerseyexplained the situation on 23rdOctober: they had only three staffleft to print the newspaper - the restof the staff, from the editor, the greatJèrriais poet EJ Luce, down to theapprentice, a lad named Du Feu, hadbeen laid low, often along with theirentire families. In a postscript thepaper added that both the 37-year-old EJ Luce and young Du Feu haddied. Reporting was very difficult inthe crisis - even as world eventsmoved towards the longed-forpeace.Another reason for the low-key

reaction to the Armistice was that on23rd October, in reaction to theoutbreak of influenza, the Bailiff andSanitary Committee had prohibitedall lectures, entertainments, concerts, etc. and ordered the closure of all theatres, public halls and places ofentertainment. They also called on the public not to call or attend anymeetings or gatherings. So public celebrations of the end of the wardid not take place as one might imagine, and in the circumstances ofsuch a large part of the population struck down with illness or grief, itis hardly surprising. This was a flu pandemic which spread rapidly across the globe in

1918; perhaps troop movements and civilian displacement aided therapid transmission. The disease killed more people overall (perhapsbetween 3 percent and 6 percent of the world's population) thanwere killed in the Great War. It was particularly fatal to young adults, with most fatalities caused by pneumonia, as a secondary infection, orby violent haemorrhages. By 20th November the crisis had passed its peak: recorded cases in

St Helier and in the east of the Island had dropped, although the west

One of the often-overlooked historic features of our Town Hall is the plaque on the front ofthe dais in the Assembly Room: "This Panel Commemorates the Devoted Services Renderedby John Edwin Pinel, Constable of St. Helier, to the Island of Jersey during the great epidemicof October and November 1918.”

Pinel and the pandemic

of the Island was still in the grip of the epidemic. Thoughts turned inthe newspapers to gratitude to those who had achieved peace andthose who had shown determination in the face of the epidemic. JohnEdwin Pinel, Connétable of St Helier, was praised for having taken theinitiative in organising a response to the emergency. He had

requisitioned supplies, orderedfood and medicine, formed anursing corps, equipped transportfor patients and organised anetwork of distribution oftreatment and nursing visits. Hepersonally oversaw the carrying-out of the dead, even going so farfor one of his age as to lend hisown hands to help in theencoffinment. The Town Hall hadbeen turned into a round-the-clock emergency centre.

The Connétable held a dinnerat the Halkett Hotel on 20thNovember to thank those whohad offered their nursing servicesduring the emergency. Mrs Pinelpresented nurses each with a goldbracelet with an inscription: "ForServices Rendered. Jersey, Oct.-Nov., 1918". I wonder whetherany of these bracelets are still heldas family heirlooms byParishioners today?

On 28th November a meetingwas held at the Town Hall todecide on the recommendationsof a committee formed to

commemorate the Connétable's actions during the emergency. Theproposal of a plaque was approved and it was further decided topresent an address on parchment to Mr Pinel and a present to MrsPinel. A public subscription was launched to raise the necessary funds.Next time you're in the Assembly Room, why not have another

look at the plaque and take a moment to recall the victims of Jersey'sforgotten tragedy of 1918?

e sculpture will be a prominent feature leading from Langtry Gardens to a prestigious community centre which is an integral part of the design by award winning architect, Professor Robert Adams.

The town centre has come under scrutiny lately with the publicationof the town centre Health Check and the presentation of the resultsby Martin Blackwell, the Chief Executive of the Association of TownCentre Management. St Helier came out of the review as being a goodand effective town, apart from the difficulty of parking, and as a resultof the Health Check it was decided to form a Town Team. This willconsist of all areas of town participants from town residents to shopkeepers and Parish and States departments who affect the wellbeing oftown. The team is producing a vision for town so all actions will reflectthe objectives of the vision. We look forward to publicising the visionin the coming edition of the Town Crier and look forward to receivingyour comments. The health of the town centre is reflected by the amount of empty

shops that exist in the town. We currently have 4 percent emptyshops, which is a third of the UK figure. There are also at least nineshops due to open before Christmas. However, we are looking atways of utilising the existing shops by encouraging “Pop Up” shops andanimating the existing shops with a new range of pictures that illustratewhat St Helier was like in the days of cars in King Street and whenWests Cinema was thriving in Bath Street. There are also plans forpublic displays of poems by local writers. The Town Centre Partnership is busy planning for Christmas and

the trading hours have been established and shown below. There arealso plans for a new light switch in the precinct at the junction of NewStreet on Thursday 29th November at 6pm and the shops have someexciting ideas to support this. We will also be holding the ChristmasWindow Competition throughout the month of December inassociation with Claire Boscq-Scott of ‘4 Star Services’, which will giveeverybody a chance to vote for their favourite window. It is great to see that in a time of financial hardship everyone in St

Helier is doing their best to maintain the town as a thriving and vibrant centre.

From a start of ten electric and six manualvehicles the Scheme has expanded to over100 electric and 60 manual chairs, as well astri- and quad-walkers, toilet seats on wheels,an electric bath seat, Zimmer frames and sothe list continues.A modest hire charge is made and for

users of the Scheme free parking is available inthe Sand Street car park*. The income is lessthan the cost of running the Scheme eventhough there is a total wages bill well underthe average salary for one person. Most of thestaff are volunteers and all the money takenand raised goes back to ensure the future ofthe Scheme. For a service that effectivelyoperates six days a week, and the seventh ifrequired, one paid person shows how muchwork is done by volunteers. Shopmobility alsoreceives charitable grants and donations, including from the Parish of St Helier, forwhich the operators of the Scheme are mostgrateful.

In addition weacquired 10 new wheelchairs to supplementour current fleet which is sometimes underpressure. We have disposed of a number ofthe older machines. At the request of the Occupational

A small but very busy charity, particularly in the summer, is Shopmobility, St Helier, which was foundedseven years ago to supply scooters and wheelchairs to assist disabled people to go shopping. Very soonit became apparent that as well as disabled Islanders there was a considerable number of visitors whorequired similar equipment delivered to hotels and homes.

The French trip, by Max PatsitThe French trip was a very enjoyable learning trip. When we got back wehad improved our time skills, our team skills and many other important lifeskills that we couldn’t learn at school. Chateau De Terte was a brilliant hosteland the accommodation block was a lovely place to stay. The PGL staff werekind and funny and we enjoyed their company very much.We went to the American war cemetery and the D-day museum. This madeus feel quite sad about the soldiers who had lost their lives and we treatedthe matter with great respect. It was also helpful for our learning aboutWorld War Two.We also went to Fougères Castle. It was very enjoyable and we got to see

all the worn down rooms and other exiting exhibitions and displays. Also wewent to the hypermarket a few times both for personal gain and for a foodpreparation challenge. All our money was well spent (a lot of gifts forparents!).In a word our French trip was fun and educational.

Of course I was delighted and jumpedat the chance. I had a meeting withStore Manager John Marquis to iron outthe details and came up with aprogramme for the girls, who would besplit into four groups and instructed bythe store manager and staff tocomplete each of four tasks; packing asmall suitcase for a weekend, laundering and ironing a t-shirt,choosing healthy options for theirschool lunch box and, with the help ofJersey Post, addressing an envelopeincluding the postcode. The Brownies all had great fun,

received a goodie bag from Jersey Postand learnt a lot of practical skills. LaurynPawsey aged seven said, ‘My envelopewas already there when I came homefrom school the next day’. When Iasked Amy Good, aged seven, what shehad enjoyed the most, she said, ‘Theironing, it was so much fun!’ and all theBrownies agreed, each insisting ondoing “just one more”, so there aresome very lucky mums now who have aBrownie to help with the ironing basketat home! And there will be no moreproblems with choosing healthy optionsfor school lunch boxes or packing a bagfor a last minute sleepover, which thegirls now feel quite confident to do forthemselves at home. WELL DONEBROWNIES.The evening concluded with a cake

sale in aid of Durrell, De Gruchy’s 2012charity of choice, with the girls sellingthe cakes to parents and staff whojoined us in De Gruchy’s Upstairs Café,raising a total of £60.50. Finally JohnMarquis presented each girl with theirBrownie Skills Badge and a lovely teddybear with the compliments of the store. We finished with a super group photoand a big THANK YOU to themanagers and staff.

Living in a foreign country and being part of an internationalsociety is a privilege, never-ending adventure and always achallenge. Not only everyday life is different but changing thecountry we have to learn about new customs and obligations. Oneof them is compulsory education for our children. The first schoolmonth has already gone but it is still a good moment to remind allparents about the principles of school attendance.

In spite of Poland, compulsory education in the UK starts from theage of 5 years old when children attend Reception form in a Primary

This month the Town Crier is pleased to see the return of a column inPolish, both for the enjoyment of the 3,000 or so readers whose firstlanguage is Polish, as well as for those for whom learning Polish isnecessary for reasons of work, family life or just as a hobby.

Language learning tipsPolish

School. It is comparable to 1st form in Poland, when school beginswith a mandatory curriculum and finishes in Year 6 form whenchildren are 11 years old.

Very often happens that in order to cultural and customdifferences parents think that absence from school of a few days oreven a few weeks would not make any difference and nothing wouldhappen. Unfortunately for the child it means loss of continuity in alearning process and sometimes a need of resettling in a new schoolcommunity. It could even mean falling behind in studies and a verydifficult reunion with classmates.

Dear Parents, making a decision about early holidays during theschool term and choosing between the comfort and welfare of achild do not forget that acclimatization into the new environment forthe child lasts up to four years long and the first year is both themost difficult and important in developing further educational, interpersonal and group integration skills.Comprehension and clear definition of priorities, what is the mostimportant for your child will result with a quicker languageacquisition and better assimilation to the school in particular. Children sometimes cannot express their feelings but they deeplyexperience every change in their life. Let’s help them to go throughthese hardships making wise choices which will support them.

It is crucially important not to forget about reading and speakingin Polish to your child. Researches in multilingual societiesconclusively show that children with a strongly developed mothertongue sooner and more complex way acquire a foreign language.Speak and read to your children as much as possible, this will be thebest support on their new path of being a pupil.

That’s why one of the objectives of the newlyformed ‘Town Team’ is to keep the subject ofparking at the top of the agenda. Transport &Technical Services Department, whichcontrols the multi storey car parks as well asAnn Court and the Esplanade car parks, areconducting useful trials designed to improvethe availability of parking for shoppers. Personally I would like to see the

incentivised parking at Pier Road Car Parkextended throughout the week to encouragemore people to use this car park which ismostly unoccupied. Why not allow people topark there for free after 2pm on week days aswell as on Saturdays? We need to make town more accessible by

other modes of transport as well: bicycle and

At a recent Parish Assembly, St Helier electors and ratepayers gave enthusiastic support to three restaurant applications due to open in the Parish, whichwill between them create more than 150 jobs. It's extremely encouraging to see such confidence in the hospitality sector, not least because theenjoyment of a meal out is something you can't do on the internet. Nor can people enjoy the vibrant public realm of St Helier that both States andParish continue to invest in, against a background of our fine built heritage and public art, unless they come into town in person.

Coming to town

motorcycle use are on the increase, and moremotorcycle parking, in particular, needs to befound. Bus trips to and from St Helier arelikely to be improved next year, too, and itwas good to hear the proposals for the newbus operator at the Town Hall last monthwhen CTP answered questions from thepublic about the new service. More busshelters, ‘smart ticketing’, a hopper bus, andlonger hours of operation for the bus stationare all on the agenda, as well as morecomfortable buses and new routes. Speakingat the bus meeting, Deputy Richard Rondelsaid that he ‘couldn’t wait till January’, and Ishare his enthusiasm.

Dreaming spiresThere's nothing new under the sun and the idea of setting up auniversity in Jersey has been back again recently. Whether it's auniversity in Jersey to make money by attracting profitablestudents or whether it's a University of Jersey - a university forJersey and Jersey people - or else a university that would kill twobirds with one stone (perhaps a question for the Professor ofGeology?), it's a something that people have been going on andon about for years.

But seeing how technology advances and now video lectures can be shared indifferent countries, there are always possibilities. It's not a big university that'sproposed, but rather, I imagine, something like one of those liberal arts collegesthey have in America, or a very small and specialised university.

But it would be ridiculous to have a University of Jersey without having adepartment of Jersey Studies where one could study the culture, history, geography and economy of Jersey and of course Jèrriais language and literature.Well, I could imagine, for example, a Wace exam...

Question: "Everything falls...." Discuss with reference to the work of SirIsaac Newton.

But it's not of dreaming spires that those proposing a university aredreaming. No, they would be dreaming ramparts, because room would be foundfor a university at Fort Regent where the students would study. Study and sportwould take place there - as the Romans used to say in Latin: mens sana incorpore sano - a healthy mind in a healthy body. And there's nothing crazyabout that.

So when might we have a Jersey team on University Challenge? Your starter for ten!

Swimming has long been a popular sporting and leisure pursuit in Jersey. But as an activity, it can also haveexcellent health benefits, regardless of factors such as age, and regardless of whether you can actually swim ornot. Heather Uwins, who runs a local swimming company, explains more.

Aurélie Leroy, manager of St Helier basedMaison De Normandie, keeps us up to datewith events and developments happeningjust over the Channel in France.

A “Mer” pleasure!Normandy is particularly proud about its maritime heritage. With over 600kilometers of sea coasts, the region is almost surrounded by sea.

So when we try to mix our traditional camembert or our famous “andouille” with ourfruits de mer, this surprising combination make your taste buds go mad! Indeed at thevery successful seafood festival in Granville last month, I discovered ‘whelks in acamembert sauce’ which made me melt. I could not help but share this with myreaders and promote other seafood and shellfish festivals in Normandy, giving Jerseylocals the opportunity to go over and taste new recipes. Next festivals will be the“Goût du Large” in Port en Bessin (10th-11th November), “Fête des Produits de laMer” in Cherbourg (16th-18th November) and “Fête de la Coquille Saint Jacques” inGrandcamp-Maisy near Bayeux (1st-2nd December). Those events allow visitors to trydifferent food combinations that can be naturally adapted here with Jersey exquisiteshellfish. When camembert rhymes with whelks it is simply delicious...

Come on in, the water’s lovely

Swimming is a healthy activity that can continue for a lifetime. Although it’s easy tofind excuses not to go to the pool, anyone who makes the effort soon feels thebenefits once they are in the water. Swimming (or learning to swim) is a full bodyexercise that uses practically all of the muscles through the various strokes. So it’sgreat for helping to develop general strength, cardiovascular fitness and endurance. As well as helping improve general fitness, there are psychological benefits that

come with regular swimming. The water, particularly if at the right temperature, helps you relax in body and mind. A session in the water can set you up for a busyday or leave you refreshed and alert at the end of one. There are also benefits forpeople recovering from injuries or who suffer from conditions such as arthritis. And it’s never too late to learn to swim. With the right level of support and

encouragement, most people are able to overcome their nervousness, regardlessof age. So what are you waiting for – come on in, the water’s lovely. For more details on the wellbeing benefits of swimming, or information on thecurrent programme of lessons, contact Heather Uwins on 852678.
