Dear Members, Friends, and Guests,We have so much coming up at GRAM this winter!

Opening February 2, Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection is the third exhibition in the fantastic three-year partnership between GRAM and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. This features bold and often controversial works by 40 artists, including Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, Andy Warhol, and in-depth presentations by

Ed Ruscha, Richard Artschwager, and Jasper Johns. Legacy is a stunning presentation of contemporary American art you won't want to miss!

We're also celebrating works by Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, and more drawn from a very important local collection: The Stuart & Barbara Padnos Foundation Collection, on view now through the spring. These works are on a generous 5-year loan, so after the exhibition ends, these works will rotate throughout the museum galleries.

In addition, GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2013: Encore is now on view, bringing 15 curator-selected ArtPrize 2013 entries for an encore presentation at the museum. The 2013 winner, Sleeping Bear Dune Lakeshore, is also at GRAM through the spring. It's a great chance to check out some of your ArtPrize favorites in a new and beautiful setting.

With spring just around the corner, Art in Bloom returns to GRAM March 21–23 for an annual celebration of flowers and art! Join workshops, demonstrations, or simply walk through the galleries and vote for your favorite floral designs.

Want to dig deeper into the art world? GRAM hosts programs and tours for all ages, including workshops, courses, and Members-only tours. Take your tour to the next level and join one of GRAM's day or multi-day trips to art institutions across the Midwest—and to New York!

And on May 3, step onto the red carpet as GRAM celebrates its annual Gala event with a Classic Hollywood theme. Tickets available now!

There are so many things to celebrate this season, including the wonderful support of GRAM's donors, Members, and visitors. Thank you, and I hope to see you at GRAM soon.

Warm regards,

2013 – 2014

These are the bold, contemporary, and controversial artists who defined the art of our era. These artists took risks stylistically, thematically, conceptually, and pushed the very boundaries of art.

Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection features works of art by some of the most important, groundbreaking, gamechanging American artists—Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger—and features in-depth presentations by Ed Ruscha, Richard Artschwager, and Jasper Johns, highlighting works spanning their entire careers. Drawn from Emily Fisher Landau’s spectacular donation of over 400 modern and contemporary works of art to the Whitney Museum of American Art, this exhibition of 80 works traces the themes and ideas that have shaped art since the late 1960s—abstraction,

conceptualism, postmodernism, questions about the relevance of painting in the aftermath of minimalism, debates about representation, “culture wars,” and a revived interest in personal narratives. Legacy also illuminates the sociopolitical issues at the forefront of the 1980s downtown New York scene. Important works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, David Wojnarowicz, and Lorna Simpson tackle tough subject matter, including AIDS, politics, and gender and race issues. This exhibition was organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and is the third installment in a three-year, three-exhibition partnership between GRAM and the Whitney.

“Never stop learning. Never stop looking. Art is the greatest teacher."

ABOUT EMILY FISHER LANDAU

One of the preeminent collectors of post-war American art in the United States, Emily Fisher Landau is a long-time friend, trustee, and supporter of the Whitney Museum of American Art. She began collecting art in the late 1960s, and has focused on building an important collection of contemporary American art since the early 1980s. She consistently supported risk-taking artists, who “portray the world we are living in now.”

This exhibition is accompanied by a major hardcover catalogue available for purchase in The Museum Store, and an audio guide with commentary from Whitney Director Adam D. Weinberg, containing recorded interviews and commentary from many of the artists themselves. Visit the calendar page in this issue to learn about related drop-in tours, studio workshops, and visit the website for details on an Instagram photo competition.

APRIL

In Fall 2013, Grand Rapids Art Museum was awarded the Michigan Art Education Association (MAEA) Distinguished Service Award, honoring GRAM's efforts to advance the importance of the visual arts in schools throughout the state, and serve as a resource for art educators and students.

“The museum provides quality and relevant professional development opportunities for art educators, K–12, and its education department staff is eager to work with area districts and teachers."

—Susanne Butler Lich, Northview Public Schools

"GRAM has... [made] the museum inclusive for children and families, and [strengthened] their educational component... I applaud their efforts and sincerely appreciate the changes they have instituted.”

—Dr. Cindy Todd, Kendall College of Art and Design

In 2014, GRAM plans to continue advancing teacher workshops, expanding school tours, growing the Language Artists school program, and more. Learn more at artmuseumgr.org/learning.

There are Volunteer Opportunities for Everyone

When Michigan’s industry and design intertwined, Michigan became an epicenter of modern design, with visionaries statewide turning from the simple generation of products to design that rippled throughout the country. Detroit’s automobile manufacturers styled automobiles synonymous with the American dream. The state’s furniture designers revolutionized the look of the American office and home. Michigan architects Albert Kahn, Eero Saarinen, and Minoru Yamasaki defined an era. Michigan’s industry, prosperity, and educational institutions attracted the design talent that formed the foundation for modern American design.

New Volunteer Orientations Saturday, January 18, 2014, 10:00 am

Saturday, April 19, 2014, 10:00 am
