Dear Friends,

The High Holy Days are now behindus. Rabbi J and Chazzan DanBauman prepared arduously andtheir hard work came to fruition inthe form of truly inspiring services.The donation of the bima flowersby Ed and Sandy Shifman, and Pauland Toby Barbell (Rosh Hashana)and by Leon and Linda Rudman and Ann-Carol Lipshires(Yom Kippur) added a special touch to the occasion.

Orchestrating the events of this 11 day period is a Herculeantask. Honors need to be assigned to congregants. Seats in thesocial hall must be set up, then broken down again. Arkcurtains must be replaced with the special white curtains.Ushers and runners need to be found. The parking lot mustbe manned. Tables for the Break Fast need to be set up.The Break Fast meal must be prepared, served and thencleaned up. The lion's share of the work falls upon the RitualCommittee, and upon House Chair Bob Bornstein.

I want to personally thank Beverly Barbell, Lesley Bornstein,and all those who assisted them. Also kudos to the RitualCommittee: Rob Vazzana, Norm Gotshalk, Paula Gaffin,Everett Levenson, Madeleine Lewis, Leon Rudman, MichaelShain. A heart-felt THANK YOU to all of you for your manyweeks of tireless work in preparing for the High Holy Days.Thanks also to those who manned the parking lot: Bob Cohn,Norm Glickman, Alan Olans, Bill Selby, and Stu Weiner. (Mysincere apologies if I have forgotten anyone.)

From the Rabbi’s DeskThe Pilgrim fathers who, according to Americantradition, founded Thanksgiving were deeplyimmersed in Hebraic culture. They loved the HebrewBible and they knew its language well. Jewish peoplewho live in New England should be especially proud ofthe fact that this purely American holiday,Thanksgiving, began right here and has roots which liein the distant Jewish past.

It is no accident that the early settlers called theirPlymouth Colony "Little Israel". They even comparedGovernor William Bradford to Moses. They felt thatthey had fled lands of oppression and had found a newhome, just as the Israelites had once fled Egyptianslavery and settled in the Holy Land. The Pilgrims alsorecalled their emigration from Holland as being akin tothe return of the Jews from Babylonia to Israel, underthe leadership of the Biblical figures, Ezra andNehemiah. In fact, there is evidence in Americanarchives that John Winthrop, Governor of theMassachusetts Bay Colony, in 1629, was called the'American Nehemiah".

The prayers of the early Puritans revealed the stronginfluence of our Hebrew Bible even more so than theChristian. We are told that the prayer composed byGovernor-to-be Bradford, after the arrival at Cape Cod(1620), included a great many passages from our bookof Deuteronomy, the Psalms and even the PassoverHaggadah: "You shall recite as follows before the Lordyour God: 'My father was a fugitive Aramean. He wentdown to Egypt with meager numbers and sojournedthere; but there he became a great and very populousnation. The Egyptians dealt harshly with us andoppressed us; they imposed heavy labor upon us... TheLord freed us from Egypt wherefore I now bring thefirst fruits of the soil which you, O Lord, have givenme.' (Deut. 26:6ff.) And: "O give thanks unto the Lord,for He is good, for His mercy endures forever". (Psalm107:1)

According to the record, thefirst marriage ceremony inthe new colony, held on May21, 1621, was conducted in amanner "most consonant tothe Scriptures, Ruth IV".This is a possible referenceto the statement of Boaz,who, when he declared hisintention to marry Ruth(Ruth 4:10) said: "Moreover,Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have Iacquired to be my wife, to raise up the name of the deadupon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be notcut off from among his brethren, and from the gate ofhis place." And the elders answered: "WE arewitnesses; the Lord make the woman that is come intothy house like Rachel and Leah who built up the houseof Israel."

It is, then, understandable from the association thePilgrims had with the Bible and the traditions of Israel,that their Thanksgiving Festival would be patternedafter the Jewish festivals of thanksgiving forabundance and harvest as found in the Torah, namely,Shavuot, the festival of the first fruits, and especiallySuccot, the festival of ingathering.

In his preface to his "History of the PlymouthPlantation", Governor Bradford wrote: "I have had alonging desire to see with my own eyes something ofthat most ancient language and holy tongue, in whichthe Law and oracles of God were written and in whichGod and angels spoke to the holy patriarchs of oldtime." This was followed by some twenty-five biblicalpassages in the original Hebrew with their Englishtranslations. The early American Puritan colonistswere so steeped in the Bible that it molded all theirthinking and colored their language and influencedtheir festive occasions. Can we do less?

Sue Korch andVicki Lemkin deserve a big thank youfor all their hard work in planning andexecuting another successful event.Thanks to all who donated and thosewho helped during the sale and helpedclean up and deliver the leftovers toSavers. We couldn't do it without allof you.

Our next Book Club Meeting will beheld in January. We will read Lioness:Golda Meir and the Land of Israel byFrancine Klagsbrun, This is a newbook, released on October 16th. Moreinformation will follow.

ATC Sisterhood Judaica Shop




Rabbi Gerson South Area Religious School NewsOur school year is off to a fantastic start.

Now that the High Holiday season isbehind us, our learning has truly begun.

Our youngest students had a postSimchat Torah parade, which led usup to the small chapel where we got tosee a real Torah and look through aSiddur. They will now begin to focuson the stories in each Parsha of theTorah. They are creating pictures ofeach day of creation and will move onto Adam and Eve and the garden ofEden and then learn about Noah. Thechildren sing prayers and songs andlearn about Tzedakah. The childrenare singing a song about the sevendays of the week- Sunday, Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,Friday, and Shabbat. They arelearning the Alef-Bet. Soon they willknow Shin, Bet, and Taf and so theycan read the word Shabbat. Then welearn all about Chanukah.

Morah Miriam's class will continuelearning all about being Jewish andwhat it means to be a Jew.

Their unit on learning Ivrit (Hebrew)will focus on mastering, recognizing,and reading letters, with and withoutvowels, and writing them in scriptalso. Now that Bereishit has been readon Shabbat, they have begun a unit onCreation, from the first Parsha of theTorah, with a special song andupcoming project.

The students in this class are studyingTefilot and their meaning and will beadding more prayers with time. Thechildren will learn the Mitzvah ofV'Ahavta l'Reiecha KaMocha, to treatothers as you would like to be treated,and also the Mitzvah of Tzedakah. AsChanukah approaches, they will learnwhat the holiday is about, it's history,and customs and observances.

Now that the Tishrei holidays, havebeen completed, Dr. Z's seventh gradeclass will get down to business on itsstudies. They have already begunworking their way through the Torah,Parsha by Parsha, with the goal ofcompleting the entire scroll by the endof the school year. A second focus ison Jewish values. They began with"Talmud Torah", Jewish Studies, andwill work on fourteen others duringthe year. The seventh grade has ahistory component which includesunits on general Jewish history fromBiblical days into the modern era, andthen focus on the Holocaust, andfinally Israel. Along the way, theywill strengthen their Hebrew readingskills and learn to lead the prayers.

On Friday, November 17th, thechildren will lead the KabbalatShabbat services following a dinneron remembrance of the Holocaust,featuring recitations from Holocaustsurvivors. Please join us and see theprogress our hard working studentshave made.

On Saturday, December 16th, we willhold a gala Chanukah Fair. We willlight the candles, sing Chanukahsongs, and enjoy latkes and otherChanukah delights. There will becrafts for the children. Please plan tojoin us.

Please help us grow our school. If youknow any families with children, agedpre-school through seventh grade,who might be interested in joining ourschool, please pass their names on tome and I will contact them. Please feelfree to invite them to any of ourevents as our guest.
