Chehalis School District is showing “SCREENAGERS”

Our collective “love affair” with digital technology has swept us off our feet and into new territory. It is no surprise that children, too, have come along for the ride. All over the world, parents, doctors, teachers and teens, too, have begun to crack open some tough questions about this:

Is our “digital diet” healthy and balanced? Are we actually “connected”?

What have we “let go” if screens fill an average of 7 hours per day? How is our reliance on digital technology changing us?

How can parents and children work together to make smart choices?

Made by a doctor and mother of two teens, this lively, compassionate, up-to-date documentary explores why digital technology is so attractive and how our fascination with it is impacting family dynamics, mental health and brain development. Everyone has something to learn from this great 1-hour film! Join us on Wednesday, November 16th at W. F. FIRE PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST

Olympic School was actively involved in the recent fire prevention poster contest during Fire Prevention Week in October. This year’s theme was “Don’t Wait, Check the Date – Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” The following students were Olympic’s first place poster contest winners: Jonah Ames (Rm 2), Isabella Cervantes (Rm 4), Lauren Hammond (Rm 5), Emma Grady (Rm 6), Morgan Ostreim (Rm 10), Spencer Cole (Rm 34), Chloe Phillips (Rm 36), Jenna Smith (Rm 38), Ava McGregor (Rm 39), Kailei McAllister (Rm 40), Ella Young (Rm 43), and Easton Peters (45).

HALF-DAY EARLY RELEASE On November 23rd, the day before Thanksgiving, and again on December 20th, the day before Winter Break, all schools in the Chehalis School District will be attending half-day. Olympic students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Lunch will NOT be served either of these days.

HEALTH SCREENINGS Vision and hearing screenings took place on October 25th and 26th at Olympic. Re-screenings will start soon and referrals, when necessary, will be sent home as quickly as possible. Should you receive a referral and require assistance getting medical care, please contact our school district nurse, Mrs. Dykstra, RN, 219-3370. THANK YOU to all who volunteered their time in helping with these screenings. Without you this would not have been possible.

Your box tops DO make a difference! No amount is too small, as each box top coupon is worth 10 cents to our school, and that adds up quickly!

Please just have your student bring your box top coupons to our school, give them to his/her teacher, or bring them to the office, and we will take care of them from here.

Thank you for your support!

Our ASB appreciates you☺.

Ella Young, room 43, Mrs. Enlow’s class, was 5th grade Champion

and 4th-6th grade Grand Champion for Lewis County. She received a gift certificate from Nike and

Famous Footwear.

Our Walking School Bus on 10-5-16 was a huge success! Everyone that walked was eligible for a free breakfast. Did you know we served 228 breakfasts on this Wednesday? That was 28 more than lunches we served that day. WOW!

What? Even a gorilla joined in for the

Walking School Bus!

We are having our Gold Medal luncheons again this year. Any staff member at Olympic Elementary can give an Olympic student a Gold Medal for doing an outstanding job in the classroom, for helping other students, for turning in a lost item to the office, or for just about anything that shows good citizenship and a good attitude! The students put their Gold Medal Award slips in the Gold Medal Box, and the principal draws out five 4th and five 5th grade student’s Gold Medal Awards from the box each month. Sahara Pizza donates pizza for our Gold Medal Luncheons around the end of the month for these lucky students; thank you, Sahara Pizza. Once the drawing is completed, the box is emptied and ready to be filled for the next month. This program runs from September through January each year at Olympic. This is just one of the ways our community and school work together to provide incentives for kids to do their best in school and to show good leadership and citizenship.

Being a Public Service Announcer is quite an exciting adventure for students at Olympic Elementary. Approximately twice a month a different student is chosen by his/her teacher and the principal to read an announcement for the Chehalis Fire Department. The Fire Department picks up the student in a fire truck and transports him/her to the KITI radio station where the announcement is read and recorded. The students receive a recorded copy of the message they read. Please listen for their announcements on the KITI radio station.

At Olympic we want to acknowledge all students who read over one million words on or before the last day of the month. Through the use of Accelerated Reader, we are able to continuously monitor the number of books our students read, the number of reading comprehension quizzes our students take, and how many words each student has read. Students who read a million words become members of

the prestigious Million Word Club. Their name is published in our bulletin and their picture is posted in our cafeteria. October Million Word Club Members: Olivia Brame, William Cummings, Mason Dowling, and Alana Wheeler-Doll.

Cougar Classroom Corner

Students in Room 2 are beginning our study of multiplication and division. This is an emphasis in fourth grade, and we are looking forward to it. We are finishing up how to read informational text, as we will be reading this genre all year. Biomes have been the topic of our life science, with informational paragraphs and posters made for each major biome. We are filling up our kindness jar in Room 2. Our school theme is “Choose Kind”, and Room 2 is great at it!

Room 10 and Room 8’s Reading with Miss Blankinship are rocking right into fall! Open House was a blast, and it was amazing meeting new parents and greeting parents again with past students. Building on to our language arts skills, we learned how to put together a five-paragraph essay and focused on editing. We also learned how to use a story map to deepen our understanding when we are reading. We have started diving into the many depths of figurative language with our Tall Tales Unit. We are prepping to dig into text features later on in the month, which will help us enjoy reading non-fiction texts. To make your children successful, continue working with them practicing their math facts for 5 minutes and having them read for 20 minutes, each and every day!

Students in Mrs. Donahue’s and Mrs. Duncan’s classes have been working hard on writing opinion papers. We are making claims and supporting our opinions with text evidence and personal anecdotes. We are also using Chromebooks to type our final copies. We LOVE our classroom Chromebooks! In math we are exploring metric measurement conversions and place value. We are about to kick off our unit all about multiplication. We are also learning about Washington's climate, regions, and natural resources during our social studies time. Last week, we started our science unit on energy. We have been exploring sound and creating our own experiments to understand more about how sound travels. We are busy as bees this year!!!

Olympic Open House is always such a fun event at Olympic Elementary School. Students have an opportunity to show their best work to their parents and take them on a tour of our school. This year we had pumpkin sales in room 30/32, Scholastic book fair in our library, skeletons on display in our gym, food tastings provided by our very own “lunch ladies” in the cafeteria, and WSU’s Extension Lewis County SNAP-ED Program with the Chehalis Farmer’s Market vendors in the cafeteria. The first 150 families to visit the Farmer’s Market received $2 tokens to use towards purchasing items at the market.

Annual Cougar Fun Run – 1st One!

We changed things up this year. Our school’s fundraiser, sponsored by our PTA, was a Cougar Fun Run! Due to inclement weather, forecasted to be one of the windiest school days of the year, we had the event in our gym instead of on our track. Olympic students collected from community members, family and friends $12,422☺. Thank you!

The top 4th and 5th grade classes, bringing in over $1,000 each, were Mr. Ashmore’s 4th grade class, and Mrs. Blake and Ms. Jeans’ 5th grade classrooms. These three classes received a pizza party. The overall winner, collecting $1,001, was Christian Patana; he received a fit bit for being the top seller.

Students who brought in $100 or more received a subway lunch, about 30 students. These students’ names were also entered in a drawing. The winners were:

Winner of PE Teacher for the day: Caleb Gill Winner of Librarian for the day: Spencer Cole Winner of Principal for the day: Christian Patana Winner of a football signed by Richard Sherman: Jamie Cunningham

How could we not have a fundraiser without a “Pie in the Face” event? Students who collected $250 or more had the “privilege” of throwing a pie at Mr. Ellingson, our Principal, and Mrs. Dorsey, our Assistant Principal. Our good-sported Administrators were quite the troopers!
