Gazebo Park School The goings on at Gazebo…
November 2013
Farewell to some beloved structures. Early this fall the much-‐loved Gaze-‐boat and the original Gazebo were removed. After evaluating the safety and usability of the structures, the staff decided that with more than thirty years of use and exposure to the elements, it was time for them to be taken down. Esalen hired a crew (one of which was an ex-‐Gazebo student) to handle the demolition and haul-‐away. The word went out to the community and we held a Bon Voyage party. We toasted with sparkling cider and boat themed cakes. Stories and poems were spoken to honor the events for which both the boat and the Gazebo had provided space over the years. The staff is currently developing the vision for the replacement structures, using the “Outdoor Classroom Project” parameters and our own experiences of observing children in the park in choosing what we want to occupy the now empty space. To honor the legacy of the founders of Gazebo, we will use some of the original components of the structures including the spiral staircase, toddler rainbow bridge, boat steering wheel and masthead. The O’Black memorial stone was saved for re-‐installation. We are excited to watch the evolution of Gazebo’s rich traditions continue-‐ honoring our past, and letting the children show us what is needed next, as always.

Gratitude to our amazing community! Gazebo’s “fun-‐raiser” this past summer was a great success. We raised more money than last year’s event on 4th of July, and made some lovely connections to our larger Big Sur community-‐ plus it truly was fun! As always we feel so fortunate to have the love and support from our community-‐ we couldn’t do this work without you, and every child that comes to Gazebo gets to experience the magic and opportunity to grow in a wholeness that is often lacking in other early learning environments-‐ all because of each of you. Beyond the generosity of the Big Sur community and businesses who donated to our raffle, and the families and people who turned out for the event at the Henry Miller Library, I realize that once again, not a single department at Esalen missed the opportunity to contribute to Gazebo, and the smallest of our community members-‐ this is truly a model for the world!
Hello to many new faces:
Babies! Welcome N’Nady Elena Bangoura! Jasmine, our gazebo-‐ student-‐return to teacher, gave birth to N’Nady on 11/1/13 at 7:59 am. She was 6lbs and 15oz and 19 and ¾ inches long. Jasmine and Moise are in love with this new little life and feeling blessed. This makes 3 new members of the Gazebo Community in the past 2 months, with Cayenne Harvey, and Yonder Griffith coming to the world as well. We are so happy for the families of these newly arrived little ones, and look forward to their days at Gazebo. Welcome new local families… Gazebo has been enrolling new children since January 2013, with 9 new children joining us in the park. We are so happy to welcome these new families into our community. It has been such fun getting to know these children as they get to know us, and the land, at their own unique pace. The park seems alive and happy with the noise and activity. We would love to continue to add more local and visiting children, so please spread the word if you know any families who might be interested! And a “new” teacher! Lauren Gamblin has been hired as our temporary replacement while Jasmine is out on Maternity leave. Lauren has been a long -‐term substitute for Gazebo quite a few times over the past 5 years, and brings a wealth of outdoor classroom knowledge. Lauren recieved her BA in integrated outdoor experiential education from CSU Monterey Bay with minors in Human Development and Earth Sciences. She is so comfortable with Gazebo and its students and families, as many of them already know her. She loves Big Sur and offers many insights to the curriculum because of her eco-‐conscious nature and joyful spirit. We are so grateful to have her on our team!
