this Sunday. We’ll step back into the Old Testament in the Book of Ruth, Chapter 4, verses 13-17.
November 15
th We will have a guest speaker this morning as Pastor Lee will be taking a short
vacation. Pastor Mariano (Nonong) Ordonez of the Filipino-American Presbyterian Church will fill the pulpit this Sunday. Nonong has “filled the pulpit” on previous occasions and has been well received. Come and hear this energetic man of God.
November 22
nd We will have a special speaker—one of our own—this “Christ the King” Sunday.
Jim Purtill will be sharing how God has worked in his life. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear Jim’s testimony. Stay after church and help decorate the sanctuary and church for Advent.
November 29
th On this first Sunday in Advent, the Sermon is called “Watching”. Luke 21:25-36 is
the Gospel Lesson for the message. This is also the day of our very special

PASTOR LEE THOUGHTS
There are so many things to be thankful for. I am thankful for the wonderful people of Henderson Presbyterian Church. November 1
st marks my “one year anniversary” as
your called Pastor. I have been blessed beyond what I could possibly have imagined by your love and support. For all you have done to further God’s Kingdom I am truly thankful. It is truly a blessing to serve as your Pastor.
In this special time of Thanksgiving, I would like to share a few verses that focus on ways to be thankful, to give thanks, or to express our thanks to God. Take a few moments to read these verses this month, meditate on what they say, even look them up in your own Bibles and read the verses before and after them. They will lift your spirit during this month.
Philippians 4:6—“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Revelation 7:12—“singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.’”
Psalm 50:14—“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.”
Psalm 52:9—“I will thank you forever, because of what you have done. In the presence of the faithful I will proclaim your name, for it is good.”
1 Chronicles 16:8—“O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.”
Psalm 107:1—“O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.”
2 Corinthians 9:15—“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”
1 Corinthians 11:24—“and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’”
This is truly a month to be thankful. Thanks be to God!
In His Service, Pastor Lee
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING CALLED
The Session of our church has called for a special Congregational Meeting for Sunday, November 8th
immediately after the Worship Service. The purpose of the meeting will be to elect new Ruling Elders and
Deacons. The Nominating Committee will be nominating the following members for these positions:
Ruling Elders Deacons
Alice Cain Karen Fallon
Nancy Sprague Richard Frassato
Please stay, cast your vote, and support the nominees. Serving as a Ruling Elder or Deacon is a
tremendous responsibility and commitment. They need to have everyone’s support to do the task God—and the
congregation—has called them to do.

Thanksgiving is not far away and the Deacons are trying to get prepared. This year we hope to give out 150 baskets to the needy. With the economy as it still is, our little church will be inundated with telephone calls to get a basket.
In the past, we have asked our membership to bring in different items to help us out. The last couple of years we have asked for money instead of food. Since we will have so many baskets to prepare this year, it will be easier for us to buy the food
that’s needed ourselves. Your check should be made out to HPC and at the bottom left of the check put "Turkeys."
Thank you for continuing to help in our endeavor to feed those in need this Thanksgiving.
Baskets will be distributed on Sunday, November 22nd
from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
MEN’S GROUP
The Men’s Fellowship group
will be meeting on Saturday,
November 7th. Come and
join other men in a time of a
fellowship over a delicious
breakfast, prayer, and a devotional thought to
inspire us in our lives. The group meets in the
Fireside Room at 8:00 a.m. Thanks to Marshall
Hanson for his outstanding leadership!
The Betty Baucom Memorial Food Bank continues assisting with the feeding of over 1,000 local residents each month. Your financial contributions are still needed to assist in this ongoing and vital church ministry. Please make your checks payable to "HPC Food Bank" or simply put cash in an envelope marked “Food Bank.” Thanks for your support!
KKIDID’’SS CCHURCHHURCH
Kids Church is held every Sunday during the worship service. Children are asked to sit with their families for the first part of the worship service and come up for the Children’s Message. They are then excused to the Sunday School Room to learn more about God, sing a few songs, and do other activities that help them in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Invite children you know (and, of course,
their family) to church. We are working hard to
bring younger families into our church.

QUOTEFALLS
Draw from the letters above each column to fill in the spaces in the grid below. Only the letters in each column may be used in that column. Looking at the grid, you see clear squares and solid squares. The clear or white squares indicate missing letters in the grid. The solid squares indicate the end of a word or, looking at it another way, the space between two words. Words can wrap around from one row to the next, so the end of a row DOES NOT mean that is the end of the word. ONLY a solid square indicates the end of a word. Once the puzzle is solved, the message reads horizontally, from left to right, across each row—as if you’re reading a book. Answer on page 5.

THE THANKFULNESS BOOK Purchase a photo album or scrapbook kit and make a “blessings” theme. Add photos of loved ones, including stories about why they are special to you. Also include pages of your favorite foods, favorite stories, favorite movies and all the other things that make you happy. Any time you or your kids feel down, you can open the blessing book and see all the reasons you have to be thankful—and happy about the blessings in your life.
THANKSGIVING HISTORY Though many competing claims exist, the most familiar story of the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, in present-day Massachusetts, in 1621. More than 200 years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941. Taken from www.history.com
PLANNING FOR A SAFE
HOLIDAY MEAL
As Thanksgiving approaches, the prospect of seeing family and friends builds excitement and sometimes anxiety in people’s minds. If the cause of your anxiety is due to cooking the traditional holiday meal, RELAX! A few simple steps can ensure a delicious and safe meal for family and friends. Fresh or Frozen? There is no real difference between a fresh or frozen turkey. Some people think a fresh turkey is tenderer or has more flavor than a frozen bird. It’s really an individual preference. When should you purchase your turkey? If you are buying a frozen turkey, you can buy it any time before the holiday, but be sure you have plenty of room in your freezer to store it. If buying a fresh turkey, buy it only 1 or 2 days before cooking it. NEVER buy a pre-stuffed fresh turkey. How much turkey do you need? Use this chart to help you decide:
Thawing. It’s best to thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator, in its original wrapper. Allow 24 hours of thawing time for each 4 to 5 pounds of turkey. Do not start thawing too early. You should not store a thawed turkey for more than two days. If you realize that you’ve waited too long to start thawing your turkey, don’t despair. You can thaw your bird in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes. You’ll need about 30 minutes of thawing time per pound of turkey. Never thaw your turkey on the counter. Bacteria can grow rapidly putting you at risk of illness. Stuffing. If you choose to stuff your turkey, make the stuffing and stuff the turkey right before you are ready to place it in the oven. Stuff it loosely with about ¾ cup of stuffing per pound of turkey. The

stuffing should be moist, not dry, as heat destroys bacteria more rapidly in a moist environment. You also can put the stuffing in a casserole and cook it separately from the turkey. Cooking your turkey. The time needed to cook the turkey is dependent on the method of cooking used (cooking bag, convection oven, stuffed vs. unstuffed, etc.). If cooking in a roasting pan in the oven, allow approximately 25 minutes per pound for a stuffed turkey. The turkey is done when it reaches 180ºF to 185ºF in the inner thigh. The stuffing should reach at least 165ºF. Use a meat or instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. For additional food safety information or for more
information on cooking the holiday bird, call the
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at 702-
