Even thought the experts tell us the last decade has produced no more weather related

disasters than in the previous decade, sure seems like we are getting more and more lessons in Supply Chain Risk Management. Be it fires at a supplier, hurricanes in the Gulf, earthquakes, Tsunamis or floods; Supply Chains have been disrupted causing huge impact on companies and their customers. One study by Hendrick and Sinhai of 885 supply chain disruptions announced by publicly traded firms yielded the following information on the companies:

-A 107% drop in operating income

-A 114% drop in return on sales

-A 93% drop in return on assets

-7% lower sales growth

-11% growth in cost

-14% growth in inventories

So what steps should supply chain professionals take to prepare for what seems like a 100% probability—that their supply chains will be interrupted?

I had the opportunity to attend the APICS Supply Chain Risk Seminar held just before the October International Conference in Denver. Attendance at this seminar combined with attendance at the Risk Management learning path during the conference, earned attendees the new APICS Risk Management Certificate. Attending the sessions was a great experience to see what leading experts and companies were doing to prevent the terrible impact on their supply chains. Here are a few of the main concepts I picked up.

1. Risks can be classified as Hard/Known risks and Soft/Unknown risksHard/Known risks can be more easily quantified as to probability of occurrence and value of the loss to the company. Soft/Unknown risks, by their nature, are unforeseen combinations of events, maybe impossible to predict leading to unexpected costs in the supply chain. So how would one deal with both types of risks.

2. Pre-Risk Prevention or Post-Risk Response AgilityWhat is the best path to take? Well as you might guess, experts say split it right down the middle. A company needs pre-risk activities like risk identification, risk prevention and risk mitigation. A company may also need to focus on what risks are going to be covered by inventory and how long will that inventory last. Post-risk activities include Emergency Response plans and Business Continuity Plans. These activities focus on thinking ahead of time, for especially soft/unknown risks, on how we are going to respond to a incident and how are we going to keep our business running as we as quickly as possible return back to normal operations.

3. What should your Supply Chain Rick Management Strategy beThat seems to depend on what your company thinks about risk. Are known risks increasing which would favor prevention or are unknown risks increasing that would favor response agility. This is for each company’s management to deci de

There is a wealth of additional information available on the APICS website apics.org. Most of the presentations from the October conference are available for professionals to download and study. The Risk Management seminar will also be offered again giving more professionals the chance to earn the APICS Risk Management certificate. I hope to see you all at future APICS Central Indiana Chapter Professional Development Meeting where topics like Risk Management will be discussed further.
